TRIP ITINERARY
Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Paucartambo → Abra Ajanacu → Cloud Forest → Overnight Stay in Pilcopata
Your Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days begins early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM. Once the group is ready, we will leave the city in comfortable private transportation and begin our journey toward the Manu rainforest.
Visit to the Ninamarca Chullpas
Our first stop will be at the Ninamarca Chullpas, ancient pre-Inca funerary towers located at approximately 3,750 meters above sea level.
Your guide will explain the historical and cultural importance of these archaeological structures, which were used as burial sites by ancient Andean civilizations. From this area, you can also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Stop in Paucartambo
We will continue to the traditional town of Paucartambo, known for its colonial architecture, narrow streets, colorful houses, and historic stone bridge.
Paucartambo is also famous for its vibrant cultural traditions and religious festivals. We will take a short walk through the town while your guide shares information about its history and importance as a gateway between the Andes and the Amazon rainforest.
Abra Acjanaco Entrance to Manu National Park
After leaving Paucartambo, we will ascend to Abra Acjanaco, located at approximately 4,000 meters above sea level.
This mountain pass marks the official entrance to Manu National Park and offers panoramic views of the Andes and the beginning of the tropical cloud forest. From this point, we will begin a gradual descent through one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Peru.
Wildlife Observation in the Cloud Forest
As we descend into the cloud forest, the landscape changes dramatically. The high Andean scenery is replaced by dense vegetation, waterfalls, moss-covered trees, orchids, heliconias, bromeliads, and giant ferns.
We will make several stops and take short walks along the way to search for wildlife. One of the main highlights is the opportunity to observe the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, at a traditional display area where males gather to perform their courtship dance.
Depending on weather conditions and wildlife activity, we may also see quetzals, trogons, tanagers, hummingbirds, monkeys, and other tropical species. With considerable luck, it may also be possible to observe the elusive spectacled bear.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as all animals live freely in their natural habitat.
Arrival in Pilcopata
In the late afternoon, we will arrive in Pilcopata, located at approximately 550 meters above sea level.
We will stay overnight in a simple jungle lodge situated outside the town and surrounded by tropical vegetation. The lodge provides private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers, offering a comfortable place to rest after the first day of exploration.
After settling into your room, you will enjoy dinner and receive information from your guide about the following day’s activities.
DAY 1 SUMMARY

Night 1: Pilcopata: Spend the first night in a comfortable jungle lodge surrounded by the sounds and vegetation of the Manu rainforest.
Pilcopata → Puerto Atalaya → Machuwasi Lake → Paititi Jungle Lodge
After breakfast at the lodge in Pilcopata, we will continue our journey by private transportation for approximately 45 minutes to Puerto Atalaya, located at around 490 meters above sea level.
Puerto Atalaya is an important access point to the lower Manu region and the Alto Madre de Dios River. Upon arrival, we will board a motorized boat and begin a scenic journey along the river toward Paititi Lodge.
Boat Journey to Paititi Lodge
The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on river conditions.
As we travel along the Alto Madre de Dios River, you will enjoy beautiful views of the tropical forest, riverbanks, and surrounding mountains. During the journey, keep an eye out for colorful birds, monkeys, butterflies, and other wildlife that may appear along the river.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as all animals live freely in their natural environment.
Arrival at Paititi Jungle Lodge
Upon arrival at Paititi Lodge, you will have time to settle into your room and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest.
The lodge is surrounded by tropical vegetation and offers simple but comfortable accommodation with private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers.
After settling in, you will enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients.
Excursion to Machuwasi Lake
In the afternoon, we will travel to Machuwasi Lake, one of the most important wildlife-observation areas in the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days.
The lake is surrounded by dense rainforest and wetland vegetation, creating an ideal habitat for a wide variety of birds, reptiles, mammals, and aquatic species.
We will explore the lake aboard a traditional handmade catamaran. This quiet form of transportation allows us to move slowly across the water and observe wildlife without disturbing the natural environment.
During the excursion, we may see:
- Hoatzins, locally known as Shanshos
- Capybaras
- Monkeys
- Dwarf caimans
- Reptiles
- Aquatic birds
- Insects and butterflies
Your guide will explain the behavior, habitat, and importance of the different species found around the lake.
Optional Night Walk
After dinner, you may join an optional guided night walk near the lodge.
The Amazon rainforest becomes a completely different environment after dark. During the walk, your guide will help you search for nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, spiders, snakes, and other animals that are rarely seen during the day.
You will also experience the unique sounds of the jungle at night, surrounded by the calls of insects, birds, and other rainforest creatures.
The night walk is optional and depends on weather and trail conditions.

NIGHT 2: PAITITI JUNGLE LODGE: Spend the second night at Paititi Jungle Lodge, surrounded by the sounds, vegetation, and wildlife of the Manu rainforest. The lodge provides private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers for a comfortable stay in the jungle.
Parrot Clay Lick → Primary Rainforest → Cocha Maravilla
Very early in the morning, before sunrise, we will leave Paititi Jungle Lodge and board our motorized boat for a wildlife-observation excursion to a nearby parrot clay lick.
Sunrise Visit to the Parrot Clay Lick
The clay lick is a natural wall of mineral-rich soil where different species of parrots gather during the early morning to consume clay. This behavior is believed to help the birds obtain essential minerals and neutralize certain toxins found in their natural diet.
From a safe observation point, we may see three or four species of parrots arriving in groups, creating a colorful and lively spectacle above the riverbank. The sound of the birds, combined with the early morning atmosphere of the rainforest, makes this one of the most memorable wildlife experiences of the Manu Cultural Zone.
Wildlife activity depends on the weather, season, and natural behavior of the birds, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Return to the Lodge and Breakfast
After observing the clay lick, we will return to Paititi Jungle Lodge by motorized boat.
Upon arrival, you will enjoy breakfast and have a short time to prepare for the next activity of the day.
Guided Walk Through the Primary Rainforest
After breakfast, we will begin a guided walk through the primary Amazon rainforest.
Primary forest is an ancient ecosystem with tall trees, dense vegetation, vines, palms, medicinal plants, and a remarkable diversity of wildlife. As we walk deeper into the jungle, your guide will explain the ecological importance of the forest and point out animal tracks, insects, plants, and signs of wildlife activity.
Depending on luck and natural conditions, we may encounter monkeys, tropical birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and other rainforest species.
Visit to Cocha Maravilla
The walk continues until we reach Cocha Maravilla, a peaceful private lagoon surrounded by tropical vegetation.
From an observation platform near the lake, you will have time to quietly search for wildlife and enjoy the natural scenery. Species commonly observed in this type of habitat may include:

- Small reptiles
- Frogs

- Other animals that inhabit the forest and lagoon

Return to Paititi Jungle Lodge
After exploring the lagoon and surrounding forest, we will walk back to the lodge.
Upon arrival, you will enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch and have time to rest, relax in your room, or explore the area around the lodge with your guide.
Optional Night Walk
After dinner, you may participate in another optional guided night walk.
At night, the jungle becomes active with frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Your guide will help you locate wildlife and explain how these species adapt to life in darkness.
The night walk is optional and depends on weather, trail, and safety conditions.

Boat Journey to Puerto Atalaya
In the morning, we will board our motorized boat and travel along the Alto Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Atalaya.
During the journey, you can enjoy your final views of the tropical forest, riverbanks, mountains, and wildlife that may appear along the way. Depending on natural conditions, it may still be possible to observe tropical birds, monkeys, butterflies, or other Amazonian species.
The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes, although the duration may vary depending on the river level and weather conditions.
Private Transportation from Atalaya to Cusco
Upon arrival at Puerto Atalaya, our private tourist transportation will be waiting to begin the return journey to Cusco.
The drive takes you once again through the diverse landscapes of the Manu region, gradually ascending from the tropical lowlands into the cloud forest and Andean highlands.
Final Journey Through the Cloud Forest
As we travel through the cloud forest, you will have one last opportunity to admire its dense vegetation, waterfalls, mist-covered mountains, orchids, bromeliads, giant ferns, and impressive natural scenery.
Depending on the schedule, weather, and road conditions, we may make short stops along the route to stretch, take photographs, or observe the surrounding landscape.
The return journey also offers a final chance to appreciate the dramatic transition between the Amazon rainforest and the Andes.
Return to Cusco
We will continue through Abra Acjanaco, Paucartambo, and the surrounding Andean valleys before arriving in Cusco.
Arrival is expected between approximately 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM, although the exact time may vary depending on traffic, weather, river conditions, and the condition of the road.
The tour concludes in Cusco after four unforgettable days exploring the cloud forest, tropical rainforest, rivers, lakes, wildlife, and natural beauty of the Manu Cultural Zone.

Hotel Pick-Up in Cusco

Please be ready at the reception desk or main entrance at the confirmed time. Travelers staying close to our office may choose to meet directly at the Machu Picchu Team office at 6:00 AM.
Private Ground Transportation
Private tourist transportation is included from Cusco to Pilcopata and Puerto Atalaya, with stops at important attractions along the route, including the Ninamarca Chullpas, Paucartambo, Abra Acjanaco, and the cloud forest. Transportation from Puerto Atalaya back to Cusco on the final day is also included. All river journeys described in the itinerary are included aboard a motorized boat operated by an experienced local boat driver. You will travel along the Alto Madre de Dios River between Puerto Atalaya, Paititi Jungle Lodge, the parrot clay lick, and other activity areas. River travel provides excellent opportunities to enjoy the scenery and observe birds, monkeys, and other wildlife along the riverbanks.
Professional Bilingual Guide
The tour is led by a professional guide who speaks English and Spanish and has knowledge of Amazonian wildlife, plants, ecosystems, and local culture. Your guide will coordinate the daily activities, provide safety instructions, explain the natural and cultural importance of the Manu region, and help identify birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and plants throughout the journey. Binoculars and wildlife-observation equipment may be used by the guide to improve the viewing experience.

Safety Equipment for River Travel

Your guide carries a first-aid kit throughout the tour to assist with minor injuries, insect bites, discomfort, or other basic medical needs. Please inform the guide immediately if you feel unwell or require assistance.
Purified Drinking Water
Safe, purified drinking water is provided during the tour to help you remain hydrated in the warm and humid Amazon environment. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle that can be refilled at the lodges.
Rubber Boots for Jungle Walks
Rubber boots are provided for activities through wet, muddy, or humid rainforest trails. The boots help protect your feet and provide better grip during jungle walks. We recommend bringing comfortable socks to wear inside them.
Solar-Powered Charging at the Lodge
Solar-powered charging may be available at the jungle lodge for small electronic devices such as phones, cameras, headlamps, and portable batteries. Electricity in the rainforest is limited, so charging availability depends on sunlight and energy capacity. We recommend bringing fully charged devices and an additional power bank.
Local Boat Operator and Support Team
The tour is supported by local staff with experience navigating the rivers and trails of the Manu region. Their knowledge of the area contributes to safer transportation, better coordination, and a more authentic rainforest experience.
Transportation of Luggage and Equipment
Your main luggage and the necessary tour equipment will be transported by vehicle and boat between the accommodations. You will only need to carry a small daypack with personal essentials during walks and daily excursions.
Free Luggage Storage in Cusco
Travelers joining the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days may leave any unnecessary luggage at the Machu Picchu Team office free of charge. Our office is located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, approximately one block from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. You may leave your luggage on the day before departure or early in the morning before the tour begins. Please bring only the clothing and personal items required for the four-day journey.
Return and Drop-Off at the Machu Picchu Team Office
On the final day, the tour of Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days finishes at the Machu Picchu Team office in Cusco, where you may immediately collect any luggage left in storage. Arrival is expected at approximately 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM, depending on traffic, weather, river conditions, and the state of the road. Our luggage-storage area is open daily, allowing you to leave and collect your belongings safely within the established office hours.
Not Included
Breakfast on the First Day
Breakfast on the first day is not included in the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days because the tour departs from Cusco very early in the morning. We recommend eating a light breakfast before hotel pick-up or bringing a small snack for the journey. Avoid heavy meals, as the first part of the route includes winding mountain roads between Cusco, Paucartambo, and the cloud forest.
Alcoholic Beverages and Soft Drinks
Alcoholic beverages, sodas, energy drinks, and bottled soft drinks are not included in the tour price. Purified drinking water is provided throughout the journey. You may purchase additional beverages in Pilcopata or bring your own, provided they can be transported safely and do not affect the activities or comfort of the group. We strongly recommend limiting alcohol consumption during the tour, especially before river journeys, jungle walks, and wildlife-observation activities.
Personal Expenses
Personal purchases such as souvenirs, additional snacks, toiletries, medicines, phone services, or other individual expenses are not included. We recommend carrying a small amount of cash in Peruvian soles, as card payments and ATMs may not be available in remote areas of the Manu region.
Travel Insurance
Travel and medical insurance are not included. We strongly recommend obtaining insurance that covers medical assistance, trip cancellation, delayed transportation, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation.
Tips for the Tour Staff
Tips for the guide, cook, driver, boat operator, and lodge staff are not included and are entirely optional. Gratuities are appreciated when you are satisfied with the service, but there is no fixed or compulsory amount.
