On Day 1 we meet you in Puerto Maldonado and travel by road and boat to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge, with an introductory rainforest walk. On Day 2 we leave at 4:30 AM for the Chuncho Clay Lick, then move to Monte Amazónico Lodge and search for caimans at night.

On Day 3 we walk 3 km to Sandoval Lake, explore it by canoe and return to Puerto Maldonado after lunch. Wildlife sightings can’t be guaranteed, as all animals live freely.

Night 1: Hacienda Tambopata Lodge

A jungle lodge on the Tambopata River.

Hacienda Tambopata → Chuncho Clay Lick → Monte Amazónico Lodge → Madre de Dios River

We leave at 4:30 AM on a 1.5-hour boat trip to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, where we have a camping-style breakfast while hundreds of macaws and parrots gather on the clay wall.

After lunch at the lodge we transfer to Monte Amazónico Lodge, near Sandoval Lake. In the evening we go out by boat on the Madre de Dios River to search for caimans at night.

After breakfast we walk about 3 km through the rainforest to Sandoval Lake and explore it by paddle canoe, looking for giant river otters, monkeys, caimans and birds.

Health tip: the yellow fever vaccine is not mandatory to enter Peru or to join this tour. Health authorities recommend it for the Amazon, so ask your doctor; if you get it, do so at least 10 days before your trip. Bring insect repellent, a rain jacket and light long-sleeved clothes.

Not included: flights or bus tickets to Puerto Maldonado, breakfast on Day 1, alcoholic and soft drinks, tips and travel insurance.

Easy: no trekking experience needed. The 3 km walk to Sandoval Lake can be muddy and slippery in the rainy season, and Day 2 starts very early.
