TRIP ITINERARY
Puerto Maldonado → Tambopata River → Hacienda Tambopata Lodge
Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, our team will welcome you and transfer you to the Hacienda Tambopata office for registration and final tour arrangements.
Travelers carrying large suitcases may leave their main luggage at the office and repack only the essential items required for the three-day jungle tour.
After registration, we will travel by road for approximately two hours toward the Tambopata River. Upon reaching the riverbank, we will board a motorized boat and continue to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.
Once at the lodge, you will receive a welcome introduction, check into your room, and enjoy lunch surrounded by the sounds and vegetation of the Amazon rainforest.
Introductory Rainforest Walk
In the afternoon, your guide will lead an introductory walk through the tropical forest. This activity provides your first opportunity to learn about the plants, insects, and animals found in the Tambopata ecosystem.
Depending on natural conditions, we may observe amphibians, reptiles, mammals, butterflies, tropical insects, birds, and other species living in the surrounding forest.
After the walk, we will return to the lodge for dinner and a peaceful night in the Amazon.
Day 1 Summary

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick → Puerto Maldonado → Sandoval Lake Lodge
We will wake up very early, at approximately 4:30 AM, and travel by motorized boat toward the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.
The boat journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. During the trip, there may be opportunities to observe wildlife along the riverbanks, including capybaras, tapirs, tropical birds, and other Amazonian species. Jaguar sightings are rare and cannot be guaranteed.
A camping-style breakfast will be provided during the excursion.
Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick
Upon arrival, we will settle into the designated observation area and wait for the activity to begin.
Hundreds of parrots and macaws may gather near the clay wall to consume mineral-rich soil. The clay is believed to form an important part of their natural diet and may help neutralize toxins found in some of the fruits and seeds they eat.
Depending on weather and natural wildlife activity, you may observe different species of parrots and colorful macaws, including red-and-green macaws and blue-and-yellow macaws.
This is one of the most impressive birdwatching experiences in the Tambopata rainforest and an exceptional opportunity for wildlife photography.
After the observation period, we will return to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge.
Transfer to the Sandoval Lake Area
After lunch, we will begin the return journey toward Puerto Maldonado and continue to the lodge located near the Sandoval Lake area.
The transfer combines river and ground transportation according to operational conditions. Upon arrival at Monte Amazónico Lodge, you will check into your room and have time to rest.
Night Caiman Search
After sunset, we will travel along the Madre de Dios River to search for white caimans, which can often be found resting near riverbanks and sandbars.
Your guide will use a flashlight to identify the reflection of their eyes in the darkness. We may also observe capybaras, nocturnal birds, bats, and other animals active at night.
After the excursion, we will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.
Day 2 Summary

- Boat journey: Approximately 1.5 hours each way
- Main activities: Macaw observation and nighttime caiman search

Sandoval Lake → Puerto Maldonado
After breakfast, we will begin the excursion to Sandoval Lake, one of the best-known wildlife destinations within the Tambopata region.
We will walk approximately 3 kilometers through the tropical rainforest to reach the lake. Along the trail, your guide will explain the surrounding vegetation and help identify birds, insects, monkeys, and other wildlife.
Paddle-Canoe Exploration of Sandoval Lake
Upon reaching the lake, we will board a paddle canoe and navigate quietly across the water.
The slow and silent canoe ride creates better conditions for observing wildlife without disturbing the natural environment. Depending on wildlife activity, we may see Hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, herons, vultures, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, tamarins, and sloths.
Sandoval Lake is also home to giant river otters, an endangered Amazonian species that can reach almost two meters in length. Black caimans and other aquatic animals may also be observed, although sightings are never guaranteed.
After exploring the lake, we will walk back to the lodge and enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch.
Return to Puerto Maldonado
Following lunch, we will return to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to the airport or bus terminal is included according to your confirmed departure schedule.
Day 3 Summary
- Main destination: Sandoval Lake
- Jungle walk: Approximately 3 kilometers each way
- Main activity: Paddle-canoe wildlife exploration
- Possible wildlife: Monkeys, tropical birds, giant river otters, sloths, and caimans

Meals During the Tour

Return Transfer

International and domestic airfares and airport taxes
Flights and airport taxes are not included in the tour price. Travel between Cusco and Puerto Maldonado, or from any other city, must be arranged separately by the traveler.
Additional nights due to flight cancellations or delays
If you need extra hotel nights before or after the tour due to delayed or canceled flights, these additional expenses are not included in the package.
Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks
Alcoholic drinks, sodas, and other soft drinks are not included. These may be available for purchase at the lodge if needed. Purified drinking water is included throughout the tour.
Personal expenses

Tips for your guide, chef, and boat crew are not included. Tipping is completely optional, but it is always appreciated if you are happy with the service.
