TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

PALCOYO RAINBOW MOUNTAIN AND STONE FOREST DAY TOUR

FULL-DAY ITINERARY — PALCOYO: THREE RAINBOW MOUNTAINS & STONE FOREST

  • Hotel Pick-Up in Cusco (approx. 4:30 – 5:00 AM) Your adventure begins with a comfortable pick-up directly from your hotel in Cusco. We then head south through the Sacred Valley as the sun begins to rise over the Andes, painting the sky in golden hues — a beautiful start to an unforgettable day.
  • Andean Breakfast in Cusipata After approximately two hours of scenic driving, we arrive in Cusipata, where we stop for a hearty Andean breakfast prepared with fresh local ingredients. This is the perfect opportunity to fuel up, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before continuing towards the trailhead.
  • Arrival at the Palcoyo Community We continue for approximately one more hour by vehicle, arriving at the Palcoyo community — the starting point of the trek. Along the way, you will be treated to stunning high-altitude landscapes and may spot alpacas and llamas grazing freely across the hillsides.
  • Hike to the Rainbow Mountains & Stone Forest From the community, we begin a one-hour hike along scenic, well-marked trails that lead to the heart of the Palcoyo range. Here you will discover three spectacular rainbow-colored mountains, each displaying vivid bands of color created by millions of years of mineral oxidation — a breathtaking natural wonder unique to this corner of the Andes. Just a short walk away, you will also visit the extraordinary Stone Forest, a surreal landscape of towering rock formations located right next to the three colored mountains. The full exploration of the mountains and the Stone Forest takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, guided by your bilingual expert throughout.
  • Descent & Return to the Trailhead After soaking in the spectacular scenery and capturing unforgettable photos, we make our way back down on foot along the same trail to the Palcoyo community, where our transport will be waiting.
  • Traditional Andean Buffet Lunch in Cusipata Back in Cusipata, we sit down to a well-deserved traditional Andean lunch, lovingly prepared with fresh local products. This is a wonderful moment to rest, refuel, and share impressions of the day with your fellow travelers.
  • Return Drive to Cusco After lunch, we begin the scenic journey back to Cusco, once again passing through the charming Andean villages and sweeping landscapes of the southern Sacred Valley.
  • Arrival in Cusco (approx. 6:00 PM) We arrive back in Cusco at approximately 6:00 PM and drop you off near the Main Square — tired, fulfilled, and carrying memories that will last a lifetime.

Not Included

To help you plan and prepare for the day, here is a clear breakdown of what is not covered in the tour price:

  • Palcoyo Entrance Fee: The entrance ticket to the Palcoyo attraction is not included in the tour price and must be paid directly at the entrance gate upon arrival. Please bring cash in soles, as card payments are not accepted at the site. We recommend having the exact amount ready for a smooth and hassle-free entry.
Visitor TypeEntrance Fee
International visitors20 soles ($6 USD)
Peruvian nationals10 soles

These fees contribute directly to the conservation and maintenance of this protected natural area and the local community.

  • Personal Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip to cover any unforeseen circumstances, medical expenses, flight cancellations, or trip interruptions. This is not included in the tour price and is the sole responsibility of each traveler.
  • Tips for Guides & Staff (optional but appreciated): Gratuities are not included in the tour price. If you feel your guide and team went above and beyond to make your experience special, a tip is always warmly appreciated — though entirely at your discretion.
  • Any services not explicitly mentioned in the inclusions list are not part of the tour package and would be at your own expense, including additional snacks, drinks, or personal purchases along the way.

We recommend bringing a reasonable amount of cash in soles on the day of the tour to cover the entrance fee and any optional extras or personal expenses.

What to Pack

WHAT TO PACK & WEAR

Dressing and packing right will make a significant difference to your comfort and enjoyment on this tour. The Palcoyo trail reaches 4,900 meters above sea level, where weather conditions can change quickly and the sun is far more intense than at lower altitudes. Here is everything we recommend bringing on the day:

  • Warm & Layered Clothing: Temperatures at high altitude can shift dramatically throughout the day — mornings are cold and afternoons can warm up considerably once the sun is out. Wearing multiple layers that you can easily add or remove is the smartest approach. Pack a warm fleece or jacket for the early morning pick-up and the higher sections of the trail.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 90+ recommended): The sun at nearly 5,000 meters is significantly stronger than at sea level, and UV exposure is intense even on cloudy days. Apply sunscreen generously before leaving and reapply throughout the hike. Do not underestimate this — sunburn at altitude can happen very quickly.
  • Sunglasses & Hat: Both are absolutely essential for protecting yourself from the strong Andean sun. A wide-brimmed hat or cap will shield your face, while UV-protective sunglasses will protect your eyes throughout the day.
  • Rain Poncho or Waterproof Jacket: A lightweight rain poncho is a must-have, especially during the rainy season (November to April). Even in the dry season, brief afternoon showers are not uncommon at high altitude, so it is always wise to be prepared.
  • Sturdy Hiking Shoes or Boots: Good quality trekking shoes or hiking boots with solid grip and ankle support are non-negotiable for this trail. The terrain can be uneven and steep in sections, particularly on the path to the Stone Forest. Sandals and casual shoes are not suitable for this hike.
  • Water & Snacks: Staying well-hydrated is especially important at high altitude. Bring at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water and pack high-energy snacks such as nuts, granola bars, chocolate, or dried fruit to keep your energy levels up along the trail. There are no vendors on the route, so come prepared.
  • Cash in Soles: Bring enough cash in soles to cover the entrance fee (20 soles per person) and any optional extras such as horse riding or souvenirs. Card payments are not accepted at the site.
  • A Small Daypack: A comfortable, well-fitted backpack is ideal for carrying your water, snacks, extra layers, sunscreen, and camera. Keep it light to reduce fatigue on the trail.

🪨 A Note on the Stone Forest Visit The visit to the Stone Forest is optional, but it is an experience we wholeheartedly recommend. Located just a short walk from the third Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, the Stone Forest rewards you with one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the entire tour — sweeping views of all three colored mountains and the majestic Ausangate Glacier in the distance. If you are feeling well with the altitude, do not miss it. Just make sure you are wearing proper footwear, as the trail to the Stone Forest is short but steep.

The right preparation makes all the difference — dress smart, stay hydrated, and get ready for one of the most extraordinary landscapes the Andes has to offer.

🦙 Will I see alpacas and llamas during the tour? Very likely! Along the drive to the Palcoyo community and throughout the trail, you will pass through high-altitude landscapes where alpacas and llamas roam freely in their natural habitat. You may also encounter locals dressed in traditional Andean clothing accompanying their animals — a wonderful opportunity for memorable photos. While there is no fixed fee, it is customary to tip around 5 soles (~$2 USD) as a kind gesture that directly supports the local communities.

🪨 Is the Stone Forest visit included in the tour? Yes! The visit to the Stone Forest is included as part of the tour route and is one of the most extraordinary highlights of the day. Located just a 10-minute walk from the third Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, the Stone Forest rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of all three colored mountains and the majestic Ausangate Glacier in the distance. It also turns the hike into a loop circuit, so you return via a different path rather than retracing your steps. We wholeheartedly recommend it to every traveler.

💪 How difficult is the Palcoyo hike? The Palcoyo hike is rated moderate and is considered more accessible than the classic Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain trail. The walk from the Palcoyo community to the main viewpoint takes approximately one hour at a relaxed pace, with an additional 40 minutes to explore the Stone Forest. The main challenge is the altitude — the trail reaches 4,900 m / 16,076 ft — rather than the distance or terrain. We recommend spending at least one night in Cusco to acclimatize before joining the tour.

🌤️ What is the best time of year to visit Palcoyo? The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to November, when skies are clearer and the vivid mineral colors of the mountains are most striking and photogenic. During the rainy season (December to March), the trail can be muddy and cloud cover may partially affect the views — though tours operate year-round and Palcoyo remains beautiful in every season.

💡 Essential tips before your visit

  • Acclimatize first — The trail reaches nearly 5,000 m above sea level. Spend at least one night in Cusco before the tour and consult your doctor about altitude medication if needed.
  • Dress in layers — Mornings are cold but temperatures can rise significantly during the day. Be prepared for both.
  • Wear proper hiking footwear — Sturdy shoes with good grip are essential, especially for the Stone Forest section of the trail.
  • Bring sunscreen (SPF 90+ recommended) and sunglasses — UV rays are extremely intense at high altitude, even on overcast days.
  • Pack snacks and water — There are no vendors on the trail, so bring enough to stay hydrated and energized throughout the hike.
  • Carry cash in soles — Needed for the entrance fee (20 soles per person) and any optional extras. Cards are not accepted at the site.
  • Respect the environment — Stay on marked trails, carry out all rubbish, and help preserve this extraordinary natural landscape for future generations.

Travel Guide

Insider Knowledge You Need to Know

  • During the rainy season, avoid heading to Palcoyo in the afternoon. The area has a high concentration of minerals, which increases the risk of lightning strikes. Safety first!
  • You’ll get to enjoy the incredible beauty of the area without the huge crowds of the classic tour. It’s a much more peaceful experience, where you’ll see Quechua-speaking shepherds with their herds of llamas and alpacas.
  • The hike itself offers spectacular views of the entire mountain range. Every hundred meters reveals another stunning red or green valley or a unique rock formation. You’re not just seeing one mountain; you’re seeing a whole landscape of color.
  • This tour also includes a cultural stop in Checacupe, where you can walk across a traditional Inca bridge.
  • The van gets you up to 4,900 m (16,076 ft). From the parking lot, you can already see the colorful mountains, and it’s just a short, easy 150m walk to the main viewpoint.
  • If you want an even better view, a slow-paced 45-minute walk will get you to the main viewpoint of the Palcoyo range.
  • If you arrive and the mountain is covered in snow during the rainy season, just be patient! The snow will likely melt. In the dry season, however, snow will be frozen and melt much more slowly.
  • The local community has set up basic infrastructure, including proper bathrooms for visitors.
  • The trip starts at a more reasonable hour, around 5 AM, with a 3.5-hour drive each way.

My Personal Tips

  • This tour is great for all ages and is an excellent choice for families traveling with children.
  • I wouldn’t recommend going too early. The mountain’s colors are at their most vibrant on a sunny day. If it’s cloudy, they’ll appear more subdued.
  • It’s best to visit Machu Picchu and explore Cusco first. This will give your body time to acclimatize to the high-altitude air before you tackle this trek.
  • If you’re short on time but desperate to see breathtaking landscapes without a huge hiking commitment, Palcoyo is a fantastic day-trip option.

A Note on Food Needs

Any dietary restrictions can be accommodated. They’ve hosted many vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and other allergic travelers before. Just be sure to let them know about your specific needs in advance!

Palcoyo Mountain Difficulty

The trail is shorter and has fewer steep inclines, making it suitable for hikers of all levels, including beginners. The walk typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours round-trip, depending on your pace. The main challenge is the high altitude, which reaches 4,900 meters (16,000 ft), so proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. Overall, Palcoyo is considered less physically demanding but still requires preparation.

What to Pack in Your Daypack

You should carry a small backpack with your camera, a water bottle, snacks, hand sanitizer, warm clothes, and a waterproof jacket or poncho, just in case. (Though rain is unlikely from May to October, the dry season).

The Red River

As you head towards Palcoyo during the rainy season (November to March), you might see a nearby river flowing with a striking red color. This is caused by iron-oxide-rich sandstone washing down from the mountains. It’s a unique natural phenomenon that depends on recent rainfall.

Photo Costs & Local Culture

You’ll see many local people in traditional clothing. This isn’t for show; it’s a custom passed down through generations. If you want to take a photo with them and their llamas, it’s customary to offer a tip of around 5 soles (about $2). Local families also bring their alpacas and llamas, sometimes dressed in fun outfits, for tourist photos. It’s a great way to get a unique shot and support the local community.

Prepare for the Altitude

The best way to get ready is to arrive in Cusco at least three days before your tour. I’d recommend doing the city tour, then the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, leaving Palcoyo for your last day. Drink plenty of water. If you’re still feeling the effects, you can consider altitude sickness medication like Diamox, but make sure you’re not allergic first.

Dress in Layers

The weather here can change in a heartbeat. It can be sunny one moment and then cloudy, windy, and cold the next. Dressing in layers is the only way to go so you can adapt easily.

Respect the Environment

Palcoyo is a beautiful natural wonder. To protect it, it’s so important to be a responsible visitor. Stick to the marked trails, leave no trace, and don’t disturb the wildlife. By being respectful, we can help keep these three stunning mountains as incredible as they are today.

Hiking Tips

  • Go Slow: At high altitudes, a slow and steady pace is the key to avoiding altitude sickness.
  • Drink Water: Stay hydrated throughout the hike.
  • Rest Often: Take regular breaks and listen to your body. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and rest.

A Note on Group Tours

When you join a group tour, people will have different walking paces. If some are faster, they’ll be allowed to go ahead and will wait at certain points for the group to catch up. The guide’s priority is ensuring everyone is safe.

Strikes and Demonstrations

If a strike is planned for your tour day, the situation will be monitored. If roads are completely blocked, the tour will be canceled and you’ll receive a full refund. Your safety is the top priority.

Cancellations and Refunds

  • Full Refund: If you cancel up to 24 hours before the tour begins.
  • Partial Refund: If you cancel within 24 hours but before 7 PM the day before the tour, you will forfeit your deposit.
  • No Refund: If you cancel after 7 PM the day before the tour, you will forfeit the full payment.
