TRIP ITINERARY

FULL DAY TOUR:

Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Chinchero → Moray → Maras Salt Mines → Ollantaytambo → Pisac → Return To Cusco

Your Sacred Valley of the Incas Full Day Tour begins with hotel or Airbnb pick-up in Cusco between 6:15 and 6:45 AM. The exact pick-up time will be confirmed after your reservation, once we receive the name and location of your accommodation. Travelers staying near the historic center may also meet us directly at the Machu Picchu Team office, located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, at 6:45 AM.

Once the group is ready, we will leave Cusco and begin the scenic journey toward the Sacred Valley. Our first destination is Chinchero, located approximately 45 minutes from the city. Here, you will visit the archaeological complex, admire its impressive Inca terraces, and see the colonial church built over ancient Inca foundations. You will also enjoy a traditional textile demonstration led by a local family, who will explain how alpaca wool, natural dyes, and ancestral weaving techniques are still used today.

After visiting Chinchero, we will continue to Moray, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. Moray is famous for its large circular terraces, believed to have been used by the Incas as an agricultural experimentation center. Your guide will explain how the different levels created distinct microclimates for growing and adapting crops.

A short drive will then take us to the Maras Salt Mines, where thousands of salt pools cover the mountainside. These pools have been used since pre-Inca times and are still managed by local families. You will learn how the salty spring water is directed into the pools and naturally evaporated to produce different varieties of salt. You will also have time to take photographs and visit the small local stalls.

At approximately 12:30 PM, we will arrive in Urubamba, where you will enjoy a buffet lunch at a local restaurant. The buffet includes a selection of traditional Peruvian dishes, salads, side dishes, and vegetarian options, giving you time to relax and recharge before continuing the tour.

After lunch, we will travel to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important and best-preserved Inca towns in Peru. Your guide will lead you through the archaeological complex, including the impressive terraces, ceremonial areas, water channels, and the Temple of the Sun. From the upper section, you will also enjoy panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

Travelers continuing to Machu Picchu by train may choose to finish the tour in Ollantaytambo, subject to prior coordination. The visit usually ends at approximately 3:00 PM, allowing enough time to continue to the train station.

The final archaeological stop of the day is Pisac, located in the eastern section of the Sacred Valley. The site is known for its extensive agricultural terraces, ceremonial areas, ancient structures, and impressive views over the valley. Your guide will explain the historical importance of Pisac while giving you time to explore and take photographs.

After visiting Pisac, we will begin the return journey to Cusco. We expect to arrive at Plaza Regocijo, near Cusco’s Plaza de Armas and the Machu Picchu Team office, between 6:30 and 7:00 PM.

Travel time between the attractions usually ranges from 30 minutes to one hour, while each visit lasts approximately 30 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic, group pace, and local conditions. If you do not already have the Cusco Tourist Ticket, you can purchase it at Chinchero, the first archaeological stop of the tour.

Hotel or Airbnb Pick-Up

We will pick you up from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco between 6:15 and 6:45 AM. The exact time will be confirmed after your reservation, once we receive the name and location of your accommodation. Please be ready at the reception or main entrance at the confirmed time. If you are staying near the historic center, you may also meet us directly at the Machu Picchu Team office at 6:45 AM.

Comfortable Tourist Transportation

The tour includes round-trip tourist transportation from Cusco in a comfortable and well-maintained vehicle. Throughout the day, you can relax and enjoy the scenery while we take care of the transfers between Chinchero, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and Cusco. Our transportation service is planned to make the journey safe, organized, and as comfortable as possible.

Professional Bilingual Guide

A professional guide who speaks English and Spanish will accompany you throughout the tour. At each archaeological site, your guide will explain the history, architecture, agriculture, traditions, and daily life of the Incas. You will also learn about the local communities and the importance of the Sacred Valley in both the past and present.

Buffet Lunch in Urubamba

The tour includes a buffet lunch at a selected restaurant in Urubamba, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley. The buffet offers a variety of Peruvian dishes, soups, salads, side dishes, and desserts. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary options are available when requested in advance.

Small-Group Experience

Our Sacred Valley Tour usually operates with groups of approximately 12 to 14 travelers, with a maximum of 16 participants. A limited group size allows for better coordination, more direct communication with the guide, and a more comfortable visit at each destination. It also gives travelers more opportunities to ask questions and receive personal assistance throughout the day.

Return and Drop-Off in Cusco

The tour returns to Cusco between approximately 6:30 and 7:00 PM. The main drop-off point is the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, located just one block from the Plaza de Armas. Travelers continuing to Machu Picchu by train may finish the tour in Ollantaytambo, provided this is coordinated in advance.

Free Luggage Storage

When you book the Sacred Valley Tour with Machu Picchu Team, you may leave your luggage safely at our main office at no additional cost. Since the tour finishes at the Machu Picchu Team office, you can collect your belongings conveniently as soon as you return to Cusco.

Safety and Assistance

Your safety and comfort are important to us. The guide carries a first-aid kit and is prepared to assist with minor health concerns or unexpected situations during the tour. Because this is mainly a cultural and archaeological tour rather than a demanding hike, the pace is comfortable. However, the guide will always provide support, clear instructions, and assistance at sites with stairs, uneven paths, or higher elevations.

Not Included

Entrance Fees for the Sacred Valley Tour

To enter the main archaeological sites included in the Sacred Valley Tour, you need to purchase the Cusco Tourist Ticket, also known as the Boleto Turístico del Cusco (BTC). You can buy this ticket in Cusco or directly at the first archaeological site of the tour, usually Chinchero. Payment must be made in cash and in Peruvian soles. US dollars, other foreign currencies, credit or debit cards, and digital payments are not accepted, so we recommend bringing the exact amount.

  • 🎟️General Tourist Ticket – 130 Soles

The General Tourist Ticket is valid for 10 days and includes entrance to 16 attractions in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. It covers sites such as Chinchero, Moray, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay, Tipón, Pikillacta, and several museums in Cusco. This option is recommended for travelers who plan to visit several archaeological sites and attractions during their stay.

  • 🎟️Partial Tourist Ticket – 70 Soles

The Partial Tourist Ticket is valid for 2 days and includes entrance to the four main archaeological sites visited during the Sacred Valley Tour: Chinchero, Moray, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac. This is the most practical option for travelers who only plan to visit the Sacred Valley and do not need access to the other attractions included in the general ticket.

To access the main archaeological sites of the Sacred Valley and Cusco, you must purchase the Tourist Ticket (BT). This ticket can be acquired in Cusco city (at the Municipality) or directly at your first archaeological site visit, such as Chinchero. Important: Payment is accepted only in cash and Peruvian soles; U.S. dollars, foreign currencies, credit/debit cards, and electronic payments are not accepted. We recommend bringing the exact amount for easy purchase. Two ticket types available: the General Tourist Ticket costs 130 soles, includes 16 sites to visit, and is valid for 10 days; the Partial Tourist Ticket costs 70 soles, covers 4 sites, and is valid for 2 days.

Maras Salt Mines Entrance Fee – 20 Soles

The entrance to the Maras Salt Mines is not included in either version of the Cusco Tourist Ticket. The fee must be paid separately at the entrance in cash and in Peruvian soles. We recommend carrying the exact amount to make the entry process faster and easier.

Frequently Asked Questions SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS FULL DAY TOUR FROM CUSCO

Is the Sacred Valley Tour a good way to acclimatize before doing a trek in Cusco?

Yes. The Sacred Valley Tour is an excellent way to begin adjusting to the altitude before doing hikes such as the Inca Trail or the Salkantay Trek. During the tour, you will visit places located at different elevations. Chinchero is approximately 3,700 meters above sea level, Moray is around 3,500 meters, the Maras Salt Mines are close to 3,000 meters, Pisac is about 2,900 meters, and Ollantaytambo is approximately 2,700 meters. This gradual change in elevation can help your body adapt more easily. In addition, most of the tour is done by tourist transportation, and the walks inside the archaeological sites are relatively easy.

Can I start the tour in Ollantaytambo or somewhere else in the Sacred Valley?

The group tour begins in Cusco and follows this route: Chinchero, Moray, Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and return to Cusco. We do not recommend starting in Ollantaytambo because you would miss the visits to Chinchero, Moray, and the Maras Salt Mines. However, you may join the group in Chinchero with prior coordination. If you would like to begin the tour in Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, or another location in the Sacred Valley, the best option is to book a private tour with an itinerary and schedule adapted to your location.

Is there much walking during the tour, or is everything done by vehicle?

Transportation between the different attractions is provided by tourist vehicle. The vehicle will take you to the entrance of each place included in the itinerary. Once inside the archaeological sites, you will walk to explore the main sectors, terraces, temples, and viewpoints. The walks are moderate, although places such as Ollantaytambo and Pisac include stairs, slopes, and uneven paths.

Does the tour include stops at local handicraft markets?

During the tour, you will see local markets and handicraft stalls near several archaeological sites, especially in Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac. In Chinchero, we also visit a local family to learn about the traditional process of producing Andean textiles. You will see how wool is prepared, how natural dyes are made, and how ancestral weaving techniques are still used today.

Is it a good idea to buy souvenirs or handicrafts in the Sacred Valley?

Yes. Buying handicrafts is a good way to directly support local families and producers. In many cases, prices can also be more affordable than in shops in central Cusco. However, we recommend checking the quality of the product carefully before buying. Some sellers may describe synthetic items as alpaca or baby alpaca. You can ask your guide for advice about materials, quality, and reasonable prices. The visit at each destination usually lasts between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on the size of the site, the pace of the group, traffic, and daily conditions. Smaller places such as Moray and the Maras Salt Mines usually require less time. More extensive archaeological sites such as Ollantaytambo and Pisac require longer visits because they involve more walking and exploration. The time at each stop includes the guide’s explanation, visits to the main areas, time for photographs, and a few moments to enjoy the scenery.

Why does the tour not visit every archaeological site in the Sacred Valley?

The Sacred Valley contains many archaeological sites, traditional communities, and historic locations, so it is not possible to visit all of them in a single day. Our itinerary includes five of the most important and representative attractions in the region: Chinchero, Moray, the Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac. This route allows you to discover different aspects of Inca culture, including agriculture, architecture, salt production, textile traditions, and the organization of ancient Andean communities.

Where is lunch served, and what options are available?

Lunch is served at a tourist restaurant in Urubamba, which is located around the middle of the Sacred Valley route. We provide a buffet lunch with a wide selection of Peruvian dishes, soups, salads, side dishes, and desserts. You can choose the food and portions you prefer.Vegetarian, vegan, and other special dietary options are also available. Please let us know about any dietary requirements when booking or inform your guide during the tour. The lunch stop lasts approximately one hour and is included in the tour price.
