Salkantay Trek 5 Days Itinerary

Cusco → Mollepata → Soraypampa → Humantay Lake → Sky Star Domes

Your Salkantay Trek 5 Days starts with hotel pickup in Cusco between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. We drive about 2 hours to Mollepata, where you have breakfast at a local restaurant and time to buy last-minute supplies.

After one more hour by car, we reach Soraypampa (3,900 m). Here you meet our muleteers and horses, who will carry the camping gear and your duffle bag during the trek.

The hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m) takes about 2 hours: an easy first hour, then a steeper climb. At the lake you have 1 to 1.5 hours to enjoy the turquoise water, take photos and learn about the area with your guide.

We then walk down to our Sky Star Domes campsite, arriving around 2:00 PM for a hot lunch. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views of Salkantay Mountain. Dinner is at 6:00 PM, followed by a briefing for Day 2.

DifficultyModerate
Distance10 km / 6 mi
Hiking time5–6 hours
Camp altitude4,000 m

Good to know: Nights are cold and windy in the dry season (May–August), down to -5°C. Day 1 is a good warm-up to acclimatize for Day 2.

Included Today

  • ✓Private transport from Cusco
  • ✓Breakfast, lunch, tea time and dinner
  • ✓Professional guide
  • ✓Horses for your 7 kg duffle bag

Night 1: Sky Star Domes

Sleep in our 360° crystal domes in Quiswarniyoc, near Soraypampa, with interior lighting, 5-inch mattresses and pillows, and amazing views of the glaciers and the night sky.

Soraypampa → Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) → Wayracmachay → Chaullay

We wake up at 5:00 AM with a hot coca tea brought to your dome, followed by breakfast at 5:30 AM. Today is the most challenging day of the trek.

The climb to the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) starts around 6:00 AM and takes 3 to 3.5 hours, with short breaks every hour. The terrain is not technical: the main challenge is the altitude.

At the pass you have 30 to 45 minutes to enjoy close-up views of Salkantay Mountain. Many groups join a traditional offering to the Apus, the sacred mountain spirits.

We descend for about 2 hours to Wayracmachay for lunch, then 2.5 to 3 more hours to Chaullay (2,900 m), as the landscape changes from high Andes to cloud forest. Dinner is served at camp.

DifficultyChallenging
Distance22 km / 14 mi

Good to know: This is the hardest day, but you have the whole day to walk at your own pace. It is also one of the most scenic days of the trek.

  • ✓Oxygen and first aid kit

Night 2: Panoramic Cabins

Rest in our panoramic cabins in Chaullay (2,900 m), with 5-inch mattresses, pillows and beautiful views of the Salkantay Valley.

Chaullay → Santa Teresa Valley → Lucmabamba Coffee Farm → Sky Star Domes

After the big effort of Day 2, today is easier. Wake-up tea is at 5:30 AM and breakfast at 6:00 AM.

We start walking around 6:30 AM on a mostly flat trail through the green Santa Teresa Valley, with lots of plants, birds and fruit trees. The hike takes about 4 hours.

In Lucmabamba, a local family shows you how they grow, harvest and roast their coffee, and you prepare and taste your own cup. Here you can also try the optional zipline.

Lunch is served at our Sky Star Domes in Lucmabamba, and the afternoon is free. You can relax at camp or visit the Santa Teresa hot springs (optional, about 40–50 soles including transport and entrance). Dinner is at 7:30 PM.

Night 3: Sky Star Domes

Sleep in our 360° crystal domes in Lucmabamba, with interior lighting, 5-inch mattresses and pillows, surrounded by the cloud forest.

Lucmabamba → Llactapata (2,700 m) → Hidroeléctrica → Aguas Calientes

Wake-up is at 6:00 AM and breakfast at 6:30 AM. Around 7:00 AM we start the 3-hour climb on an original Inca path to Llactapata (2,700 m).

From Llactapata you get your first view of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu from a quiet, distant angle. After exploring the ruins, we descend for about 2 hours to Hidroeléctrica. This is the steepest descent of the trek, so trekking poles help a lot.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we walk about 3 hours along the railway to Aguas Calientes, with glimpses of Machu Picchu from the valley.

Your guide takes you to your hotel to rest and shower. Dinner is at 7:00 PM at a local restaurant, where you receive all the details for your Machu Picchu visit.

Night 4: Hotel in Aguas Calientes

A comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes (2,000 m) with private bathroom, hot shower, Wi-Fi, towels and toiletries.

Aguas Calientes → Machu Picchu → Return to Cusco by Car or Train

Today you visit Machu Picchu. Be at the entrance at the exact time printed on your ticket. From Aguas Calientes you have two options:

Walk (about 1.5 hours): 30 minutes on flat ground to the Puente Ruinas checkpoint, then about 1 hour up 1,700 steps. Shuttle bus (about 30 minutes): $12 USD one way, every 5–10 minutes from 5:30 AM.

Inside, your guide leads a 2 to 2.5-hour guided tour on the circuit of your ticket, explaining the history and architecture of the citadel. If you booked Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you hike it after the tour (about 3 hours round trip).

Return by train: go back to Aguas Calientes and take the train to Ollantaytambo (departures between 2:30 and 3:30 PM, about 1 h 45 min), then our transfer to Cusco (about 2 hours).

Return by car: walk about 3 hours from Machu Picchu to Hidroeléctrica, arriving by 2:30 PM for our 3:00 PM car transfer to Cusco (6 to 7 hours), arriving around 10:00 PM. This option only works with a Machu Picchu entry between 6:00 and 9:00 AM; with a later entry, you need an extra night in Aguas Calientes at your own cost.

Humantay Lake Entrance Fee

On Day 1 you visit Humantay Lake, which has an entrance fee paid to the Mollepata municipality: 20 soles (about $6 USD) for international visitors and 10 soles (about $3 USD) for Peruvians. Pay in cash, in soles, at the lake entrance.

Sleeping Bag Rental: $10 USD

If you don’t have suitable gear, rent one of our sleeping bags for the full trek. They are rated to -10°C (14°F), ideal for the cold nights at high altitude. Price: $10 USD for the entire trek.

Trekking Poles Rental: $10 USD

Professional, adjustable trekking poles that give you extra support on steep ascents and descents, reducing strain on your knees. Price: $10 USD for the entire trek.

Santa Teresa Hot Springs (Optional)

On Day 3, the hike usually ends around 11 AM, leaving the afternoon free. Many travelers visit the Santa Teresa hot springs, about 1 hour by vehicle from the Lucmabamba campsite.

Total cost: about 40 to 50 soles (transport 15–20 soles each way, plus a 10-sol entrance fee), paid on-site. You can also stay at the campsite and rest before Day 4.

Drinking Water Refills

Hot and cold drinks are served with every meal, but drinking water for the trail is not included. Small local shops along the route, about every 4 hours, sell 2.5-liter bottles for 10–15 soles. You can also bring a water filter or purification tablets.

Internet Access

There is no phone signal from about 9 AM on Day 1 until the second campsite, where Wi-Fi costs 10 soles. From Day 3, phone signal and internet are generally available again.

Showers and Restrooms

Campsite restrooms are free; some local restrooms along the trail charge 1 sol. There are no showers at the first campsite due to the cold. The second campsite has hot showers for 10 soles (cold showers are free). On Day 3 you can enjoy the hot springs, and on Day 4 your hotel in Aguas Calientes has hot showers.

Tips (Optional)

Tipping is optional and at your discretion. It is common in Cusco and appreciated by the trekking staff, but never required. At Machu Picchu Team, all our staff receive fair wages, so a tip is simply a way to say thank you.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included. We strongly recommend buying it before your trip, ideally in your home country, as it can be difficult to arrange once in Peru.

Really loved the Salkantay Trek. The hike itself was amazing and we had a really good time.
Hans was our guide and he was the best. He told us a lot of interesting things, was really passionate about it and was also very funny.
Also really liked the food, it was honestly very good. So special thanks to the chef and also to the person who took care of our bags during the trek.
Really great experience!

Salkantay Trek 5 Days Booking Policy and Terms & Conditions

We believe in full transparency. Please read our deposit, payment and cancellation policy before booking your Salkantay Trek 5 Days to Machu Picchu, so you can book with complete confidence.

1. Booking Deposit: $180 USD per Person

A deposit of $180 USD per person confirms your booking. We use it right away to secure your spot and buy your Machu Picchu ticket (and train tickets, if applicable). The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, no matter how far in advance you cancel.

2. Payment of the Remaining Balance

If you only paid the deposit, you can pay the balance at any time before your trek. The last moment to pay is the day before your tour starts, until 10:00 PM, at our Cusco office. You can pay:

  • Online by card (3.99% processing fee) or by bank transfer at no extra cost, at any time
  • At our Cusco office (Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo), by card or cash (soles or US dollars), until 10:00 PM the day before your tour

If the balance is not paid by then, your booking may be cancelled under the cancellation policy below.

3. Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain Tickets

Machu Picchu tickets are issued by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and cannot be refunded, transferred or changed (no date or name changes). This is a government rule, not a Machu Picchu Team policy. The same applies to Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain tickets.

We buy all tickets as soon as your booking is confirmed and email them to you, so once purchased they cannot be refunded. If an optional mountain ticket is not available, we refund its full price. You can add only one mountain per day.

4. Salkantay Trek 5 Days Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be sent in writing to our official email. The following penalties apply:

  • More than 48 hours before departure: you lose the $180 USD deposit per person
  • Less than 48 hours before departure: you lose 100% of the amount paid

If you paid in full, we refund the balance after deducting the deposit, any tickets already purchased (Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), non-refundable extras such as the Vistadome upgrade, and bank fees. If you only paid the deposit, there is no refund.

Tickets already issued in your name can still be used by you on their original date if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own.

5. Train Tickets to and from Machu Picchu

Train tickets follow the policies of PeruRail or Inca Rail. They are non-refundable, and date changes depend on availability and may have an extra cost.

6. Traveler Responsibilities

Please give us your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport. Errors may cause denied entry to Machu Picchu, extra costs or loss of services, without refund.

Send your passport copy and, for students, a valid student ID right after booking. Late documents may mean tickets are no longer available, without refund.

7. Itinerary Changes and Force Majeure

Machu Picchu Team may change, suspend or cancel parts of the itinerary for reasons beyond our control, such as severe weather, strikes, road closures, government restrictions or train disruptions. In these cases a refund or compensation is not guaranteed, but we will always do our best to offer a suitable alternative.

8. Risks of High-Altitude Trekking on the Salkantay Route

By booking, you accept that high-altitude trekking involves risks such as altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, physical exhaustion and limited access to medical care. Machu Picchu Team is not liable except in cases of proven negligence or willful misconduct.

9. Travel Insurance for the Salkantay Trek

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, cancellation, lost luggage and repatriation. It is best to buy it in your home country before traveling.

10. Traveler Conduct

We expect respectful behavior toward other travelers, our staff, and the natural and cultural heritage of the route. We may remove any participant whose behavior puts the group, staff or environment at risk, without refund.

11. Claims and Complaints

Any complaint must be made during the tour or within 3 calendar days after it ends. After that, the service is considered accepted.

12. Applicable Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Peru. Any dispute will first be resolved through conciliation in Cusco. If no agreement is reached, it will go to the competent courts of Cusco, Peru.

Personalize your Salkantay Trek 5 Days with these optional extras. Our team coordinates each one with your itinerary. Mountain tickets and the Vistadome upgrade should be requested when you book, as availability is limited.

  • Huayna Picchu is the iconic peak behind the citadel, seen in the classic photos of Machu Picchu. It needs a separate ticket, not included in the regular Machu Picchu entrance.

  • The trail has steep stone steps, narrow and exposed sections. Not recommended if you are afraid of heights.
  • Guide not included: you hike on your own on a clearly marked trail.

  • Seats are limited, especially in high season: request it when you book. Not available with the Return by Car option.
Trekking Poles Rental · $10 USD

  • They give extra balance on steep, rocky or slippery trails and reduce strain on your knees on the descents. Recommended if you have little trekking experience.
  • Add them online when you book, or rent them at our Cusco office during the 7:00 PM briefing the day before the trek.
  • Trekking poles are generally not allowed inside Machu Picchu.

  • Run by trained staff, with safety instructions and all the equipment included.
  • Special price with Machu Picchu Team: $25 USD (booking on site costs $35 USD).
  • 100% refundable if you change your mind before starting the activity, even at the zipline base.
  • Optional: if you prefer not to join, you continue with the regular itinerary.

Salkantay Trek 5 Days FAQs

Quick answers to the questions travelers ask most before booking the 5 day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu.

How difficult is the Salkantay Trek 5 Days?

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days is challenging, but its 5-day pace makes it easier than the shorter versions. You hike about 75 km and reach 4,630 m at the Salkantay Pass on Day 2, the hardest day. We recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before the trek to acclimatize.

How much does the Salkantay Trek 5 Days cost?

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days costs USD 310 per adult with return by car, or USD 380 per adult with return by train. Students pay USD 290 / 360 and children USD 280 / 350. The price includes the Machu Picchu ticket, the guided tour, all lodging and the meals listed in the itinerary. A deposit of USD 180 per person confirms your booking.

What is the difference between the Salkantay Trek 5 Days and 4 Days?

Both treks visit Humantay Lake, cross the Salkantay Pass, follow the Inca path to Llactapata and end at Machu Picchu. The 5 day Salkantay trek has a more comfortable pace, a night in a panoramic cabin and time for the Santa Teresa hot springs. The Salkantay Trek 4 Days covers the same highlights in less time, with longer hiking days.

Where do we sleep on the Salkantay Trek 5 Days?

You sleep 2 nights in our Sky Star Crystal Domes in Quiswarniyoc (near Soraypampa, facing Salkantay Mountain) and Lucmabamba, 1 night in a panoramic cabin and 1 night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes with a private bathroom, hot shower and Wi-Fi. Our campsites have 5-inch mattresses and pillows, and are reserved only for Machu Picchu Team travelers.

Is the Machu Picchu ticket included?

Yes. The Machu Picchu entrance ticket and a 2.5-hour guided tour are included. We always book Circuit 2 · Route 2-A first, then the best circuit available. Book at least 4 months in advance for the best chances.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Yes. Bring your own sleeping bag or rent one from us for USD 10 at the briefing. Mattresses and pillows are already included, and our horses carry your duffle bag (up to 7 kg).

Are the Santa Teresa hot springs and the zipline included?

Both are optional. The Santa Teresa hot springs cost about 40–50 soles, paid on site. The zipline costs USD 25 when booked with Machu Picchu Team, and if you decide not to do it on the day, because of fear or rain, you get a full refund.

How do I return to Cusco after Machu Picchu?

You choose when booking. By train, you take the afternoon train to Ollantaytambo and our transfer to Cusco, arriving around 6:30 PM. By car, you walk about 3 hours to Hidroelectrica and our vehicle leaves at 3:00 PM, arriving in Cusco around 10:00 PM.

When do I pay the balance?

You can pay the balance online by card at any time, or at our office in Cusco (Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo) in cash or by card. The last moment to pay is 10:00 PM the day before the trek.

What is the Salkantay Trek 5 Days 4 Nights itinerary?

Day 1: Cusco to Soraypampa and Humantay Lake, night in Sky Star Domes (10 km). Day 2: Salkantay Pass (4,630 m) to Chaullay, night in a panoramic cabin (22 km). Day 3: Santa Teresa Valley and the Lucmabamba coffee farm, night in Sky Star Domes (15 km). Day 4: Inca path to Llactapata and Aguas Calientes, hotel night (24 km). Day 5: guided tour of Machu Picchu and return to Cusco.

Is the 5 day Salkantay trek a good alternative to the Inca Trail?

Yes. The 5 day Salkantay trek has no government permits, higher mountain scenery, Humantay Lake and nights in Sky Star Domes, and it also ends with a guided tour of Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail 4 Days follows more Inca sites but needs permits booked months in advance.

Do I need a permit for the Salkantay Trek 5 Days?

No. Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay route has no government quota. You only need your Machu Picchu entrance ticket, which is included and bought by our team as soon as you book.

Can I book the Salkantay Trek 5 Days at the last minute?

We depart every day of the year. Because Machu Picchu tickets sell out, book as early as possible. If you already have your Machu Picchu ticket, or will buy it in Aguas Calientes, you can book as late as one day before departure, subject to availability.
