TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01:

Cusco → Santa Teresa → Zipline in Lucmabamba → Cocalmayo Hot Springs → Overnight at Sky Star Domes

The Llactapata Trek begins at the Machu Picchu Team office in Cusco, located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo — one block from the Plaza de Armas — at 6:30 am, where you’ll meet your guide and group. From there, private transportation takes you on a scenic 5-hour drive to Santa Teresa, passing through a variety of stunning Andean ecosystems.

Upon arrival in Santa Teresa around 1:00 pm, your guide will take you to a local restaurant for lunch. Afterward, you’ll board local transport for a short 30-minute ride to Lucmabamba for an exhilarating zipline adventure: five cables running mountain to mountain, plus a 300-meter-long suspension bridge set nearly 500 meters above the ground. The activity lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is one of the trek’s unforgettable highlights.

From there, a 30-minute drive takes you to the famous Cocalmayo Hot Springs in Santa Teresa, where you can relax in the thermal pools for a couple of hours, surrounded by serene mountain views.

The day concludes with a 45-minute drive to the Sky Star Domes, where you’ll spend the night in panoramic glass domes under a canopy of stars — a magical and unique way to close out day one.

Afterward, you’ll visit a local family to learn about coffee production — Lucmabamba is known for producing some of the finest coffee in the Cusco region. During this 30–45 minute tour, you’ll learn about cultivation, harvesting, and roasting, followed by a fresh coffee tasting.

From there, you’ll start the Llactapata Inca Trail hike, a 12-kilometer original Inca path involving approximately 3 hours of uphill walking. Upon reaching the Llactapata ruins, you’ll be rewarded with a unique perspective of Machu Picchu in the distance, while your guide shares the history and significance of the site.

The hike then continues downhill to Hidroeléctrica, a descent of about 2 hours, where a hearty lunch awaits.

From Hidroeléctrica, a mostly flat 3-hour hike follows the train tracks to Aguas Calientes, surrounded by lush vegetation and Andean scenery. On arrival, your guide will walk you to your hotel to rest.

Around 7:00 pm, the group gathers for dinner at a local restaurant featuring regional cuisine. Afterward, you’ll have time to rest and prepare for the following day’s visit to Machu Picchu.

  • Guide for the entire trek

Overnight in Aguas Calientes: Tonight you’ll rest in the town of Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) at a basic hotel featuring a private bathroom, hot shower, Wi-Fi, towel, and soap.

Today is the highlight of your Llactapata Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu as you visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Your entrance time to Machu Picchu is determined by the schedule printed on your ticket, so it is important to arrive at the entrance gate on time.

Getting to Machu Picchu

From your hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), you have two options to reach the entrance:

Hiking (Approximately 1.5 Hours)

Walk for about 30 minutes from your hotel to Puente Ruinas, the first checkpoint, where you will present your passport and Machu Picchu entrance ticket. From there, continue with a scenic uphill hike of approximately one hour, climbing around 1,700 Inca stone steps to the entrance gate. If your entrance time is 6:00 AM, we recommend leaving your hotel around 4:30 AM after breakfast.

Shuttle Bus (Approximately 30 Minutes)

You may also take the official shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu. The one-way fare is approximately USD 12, and buses operate every 5 to 10 minutes from around 5:30 AM on a first-come, first-served basis. Whichever option you choose, the goal is to arrive at the entrance gate at the exact time indicated on your ticket.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

Once inside the citadel, you will meet your professional guide for a guided tour lasting approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the circuit assigned to your ticket. During the tour, you will discover the fascinating history, engineering, architecture, and spiritual significance of Machu Picchu while visiting its most important archaeological sectors. There will also be opportunities to take photographs from the viewpoints permitted along your assigned route.

If you purchased an additional permit for Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, you may begin your hike immediately after the guided tour. These optional hikes take approximately 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on the mountain selected.

Return to Cusco

After your visit to Machu Picchu, you will return to Cusco according to the transportation option selected when booking.

Return by Train

Walk back to Aguas Calientes (approximately 1.5 hours) or take the shuttle bus (approximately 30 minutes, USD 12). You will then board the train to Ollantaytambo, a journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, followed by a private transfer to Cusco, which takes around 2 hours. Train departures are generally scheduled between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM, with arrival in Cusco between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Return by Car via Hidroeléctrica

If you selected the return-by-car option, you must begin walking from Machu Picchu to Hidroeléctrica immediately after your visit. The hike takes approximately 3 hours, and you should arrive by 2:30 PM to board the shared tourist vehicle departing at approximately 3:00 PM. The drive to Cusco takes around 5 to 6 hours, with arrival between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM.

Please note that this option is only suitable for travelers with a Machu Picchu entrance time between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Travelers with later entrance times may not have enough time to reach Hidroeléctrica before the vehicle departs and may need to spend an additional night in Aguas Calientes at their own expense.

  • Maximum Altitude: Machu Picchu – 2,430 m (7,972 ft)
