Salkantay Pass (4,630m)

Cross the majestic snow-capped Salkantay Pass, surrounded by towering glacial peaks and pristine Andean landscapes. This breathtaking section of the trek offers one of the most dramatic and unforgettable views of the entire journey, making it a true highlight for every hiker.

Humantay Lake

Visit the stunning turquoise waters of Humantay Lake, cradled at the foot of a majestic glacier a breathtaking sight you won't want to miss. Nestled at over 4,200 meters above sea level, Humantay Lake is one of the most spectacular hidden gems in the Peruvian Andes. Its vivid turquoise waters, fed by glacial meltwater from the surrounding snow-capped peaks, create a striking contrast against the rugged mountain landscape. Framed by towering cliffs and glistening ice, the lake offers a truly magical setting for photography, reflection, and connecting with nature. Reaching the viewpoint involves a moderate hike through high-altitude terrain, rewarding you with panoramic views that make every step worthwhile.

Machu Picchu

Arrive at the legendary Inca citadel of Machu Picchu on the final day of your trek — the most remarkably preserved site of the entire Inca civilization. After days of trekking through breathtaking mountain landscapes, your journey culminates at one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological wonders in the world. Perched high above the Urubamba River and surrounded by cloud forest and dramatic peaks, Machu Picchu stands as a testament to the extraordinary engineering and vision of the Inca Empire.

The Salkantay Trek is one of the most popular multi-day hiking routes in Peru and one of the best alternative ways to reach Machu Picchu. This spectacular trek crosses the Andes, passes through the impressive Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft, and takes travelers through an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, cloud forests, valleys, and iconic places such as Humantay Lake.
It is widely considered a more adventurous and less crowded alternative to the Classic Inca Trail, making it an excellent choice for travelers who want a more immersive trekking experience before arriving at Machu Picchu.

The Salkantay Trek is considered challenging, mainly because of the high altitude, the long daily hiking distances, and the significant elevation gain and loss on certain days. Some trekking days can cover up to 20–25 km, so a good level of physical fitness is highly recommended.
However, the trek is not technical, which means no climbing equipment or special mountaineering skills are required. Most travelers in good physical condition can complete the trek successfully with proper preparation, a steady pace, and good acclimatization in Cusco before departure.

The best time to do the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from April to October. The most recommended months are usually May, June, September, and October, when the weather is generally clearer, rainfall is lower, and trail conditions are more stable.
The busiest period is from June to August, when demand is highest. If you prefer fewer crowds while still enjoying good weather, the shoulder months can be an excellent option.

No. Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek does not require a special government permit and does not have strict daily entry limits. This makes it a more flexible option, since it can often be booked with less advance notice.
However, booking in advance is still recommended in order to secure the best group departures, the best campsites, and overall better service availability.

The most common version of the Salkantay Trek is 5 days / 4 nights, although some shorter versions, such as 4 days / 3 nights, are also available. The route usually begins near Cusco or Mollepata and ends in Aguas Calientes, followed by the visit to Machu Picchu on the final day.
The 5-day version is generally the most complete, as it allows travelers to fully experience the landscapes, campsites, and highlights of the route.

The highest point of the trek is the Salkantay Pass, located at approximately 4,630 meters / 15,190 feet above sea level. At this altitude, altitude sickness can be a real concern, especially for travelers who have not properly acclimatized.
For this reason, it is strongly recommended to spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco before starting the trek. Drinking plenty of water, walking at a steady pace, resting when needed, and using coca leaves or altitude remedies, if appropriate, can help reduce the effects of altitude.
