Cusco Hotel Pick-up → Ollantaytambo Train Station → Km 104 → Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu → Overnight in Machu Picchu Pueblo

Your Inca Trail 2 Days to Machu Picchu begins before sunrise, with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco between 3:45 and 4:15 a.m. (pickup from the Sacred Valley is also available upon request, around 5:00 a.m.). As the first light of day appears, you’ll enjoy a scenic 1-hour-and-45-minute drive to Ollantaytambo train station. There, you’ll board a train around 6:10 or 6:40 a.m., heading to Kilometer 104, the official starting point of the Inca Trail hike.

At Km 104, your professional guide will greet you and accompany you throughout the journey. After showing your entry permits and tickets at the Inca Trail checkpoint and receiving a short briefing, you’ll begin a gradual 3-hour uphill hike, ascending from 2,000 to 2,700 meters through lush vegetation and ancient stone paths. Your destination is Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive archaeological sites on the trail.

Once there, you’ll explore the site with your guide and enjoy a packed picnic lunch, provided at the start of the hike (note: cooking is not permitted along this section of the trail due to park regulations). After a well-deserved rest, the trail continues for about 2 more hours along a mostly flat path to the iconic Inti Punku (Sun Gate). From this unique viewpoint accessible only to Inca Trail hikers you’ll catch your first unforgettable glimpse of Machu Picchu from above.

After soaking in the views, you’ll hike about 45 minutes downhill to reach the upper terraces of Machu Picchu, the perfect spot for classic postcard photos with Huayna Picchu in the background. Here, your guide will explain the significance of the Guardian’s House and the agricultural terraces. You’ll spend approximately one hour in this area, as this will be your only visit to the upper part of the site on Day 1 the main citadel will be fully explored on Day 2.

Later, you’ll take the included 30-minute bus ride down to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel. In the evening, around 7:00 p.m., you’ll enjoy a special dinner at a local restaurant a great opportunity to try Peruvian cuisine and review the next day’s plan with your guide.

Every guide carries a comprehensive first-aid kit, supplemental oxygen, and emergency communication equipment to assist in the unlikely event of altitude-related issues or minor injuries, allowing you to hike with complete confidence and peace of mind.

Not Included

Breakfast on Day 1

Breakfast on the first day is not included in the tour price because the adventure begins very early in the morning with hotel pick-up and transfer to the train station. Most hotels in Cusco serve breakfast after our departure time, so we recommend requesting a breakfast box from your hotel in advance or bringing a light snack and water to enjoy before boarding the train.

Lunch on Day 2

Lunch on the second day is not included. After completing your guided tour of Machu Picchu and returning to Aguas Calientes, you will have free time before your return train to enjoy lunch at one of the town’s many restaurants. This gives you the flexibility to choose the cuisine, restaurant, and budget that best suits your preferences.

Gratuities and Personal Expenses

Tips for your guide, drivers, hotel staff, and restaurant personnel are not included in the tour price. While gratuities are entirely optional, they are always appreciated as a way of recognizing excellent service. Addons & Upgrades

Huayna Picchu Mountain Ticket – $65 USD

Enhance your 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu by hiking the iconic Huayna Picchu Mountain, the famous peak that rises behind the citadel in many of Machu Picchu’s classic photographs. This challenging hike rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Machu Picchu, the surrounding mountains, and the Urubamba Valley, while passing fascinating Inca terraces and ancient stone stairways. The hike is self-guided, takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours round trip, and is limited to 400 visitors per day across several entry times. We normally reserve the 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM entry, depending on availability. Due to the limited number of permits issued by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, we highly recommend reserving this optional ticket well in advance.

Machu Picchu Mountain Ticket – $65 USD

For travelers seeking a less steep but longer hike, Machu Picchu Mountain offers one of the most spectacular panoramic viewpoints overlooking the entire archaeological site. Reaching an altitude of 3,082 m (10,111 ft), this hike follows original Inca stone trails and takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours round trip. The mountain provides incredible views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding Andean landscape from a completely different perspective. Entry permits are also limited to 400 visitors per day, and we usually reserve the 8:00–9:00 AM entry after your guided tour, subject to official availability.

Vistadome Train Upgrade (Return Journey) – $45 USD

Upgrade your return journey from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo with the panoramic Vistadome Train for an even more memorable end to your adventure. Featuring oversized panoramic windows, a glass ceiling, comfortable seating, onboard snacks, and cultural entertainment that may include traditional music and dance performances, the Vistadome offers one of the most scenic train experiences in Peru while traveling through the breathtaking Sacred Valley.

Trekking Pole Rental – $10 USD per Pair

Professional adjustable trekking poles are available to rent for the entire hike, providing extra stability, improving balance, and reducing the impact on your knees during both uphill and downhill sections of the trail. Trekking poles are especially recommended for hikers with previous knee injuries or those seeking additional support. Please note that trekking poles are not permitted inside Machu Picchu Citadel or on the optional Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain hikes. We recommend reserving your poles in advance to guarantee availability.

Booking Policy & Terms and Conditions – Inca Trail 2 Days to Machu Picchu

We believe in full transparency from the outset. Please read the following terms carefully before making your reservation, so you can book with complete confidence and peace of mind.

1. Booking Deposit A non-refundable deposit of $250 USD per person is required to confirm your reservation. This deposit secures your spot on the Inca Trail 2 Days to Machu Picchu and is used immediately to purchase your Inca Trail permit, Machu Picchu entrance ticket, and, where applicable, your train tickets. Once paid, the deposit is strictly non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances, regardless of how far in advance you cancel.

2. Payment of Remaining Balance If only the deposit was paid at booking, the remaining balance must be paid no later than 48 hours before the tour start date. Failure to complete payment within this window may result in automatic cancellation of the reservation, with no refund.

The remaining balance can be paid:

  • In person at our Cusco office, by credit card, debit card, or cash (Peruvian soles or US dollars)
  • Online through our booking platform

If the balance is not settled within the 48-hour window, our booking platform is authorized to charge the outstanding amount to the same card or account used for the initial deposit.

3. Inca Trail Permits, Machu Picchu Tickets & Additional Mountain Tickets Inca Trail permits and Machu Picchu entrance tickets are issued directly by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and are strictly non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-modifiable. No date or name changes are permitted once tickets are issued — this is a regulation set by the Peruvian government, not by Machu Picchu Team. The same policy applies to optional mountain tickets (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), which are subject to limited availability and an additional cost. All tickets are purchased immediately upon booking confirmation and sent by email; for this reason, these costs cannot be reimbursed under any circumstances.

Important: only one mountain hike may be added per date — either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, not both on the same day.

4. Cancellation Policy All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to our official email address. The following penalties apply:

  • Cancellation more than 48 hours before departure: loss of the $250 USD non-refundable deposit per person
  • Cancellation within 48 hours of departure: loss of 100% of the total amount paid, with no refund

If the full tour amount was paid and the client cancels, a partial refund of the remaining balance will be issued after deducting the non-refundable deposit ($250 USD per person), the cost of any entrance tickets already purchased (Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, or Machu Picchu Mountain), any non-refundable additional services confirmed in the booking (such as the Vistadome train upgrade), and bank processing fees, which are also non-refundable.

If only the deposit was paid and the client cancels, no refund will be issued.

Any tickets already purchased under a participant’s name remain valid for personal use on their original date, should the client choose to visit Machu Picchu independently, since all tickets are issued by name and cannot be transferred.

5. Train Tickets When a package includes train service, tickets are subject to the policies of PeruRail or IncaRail. These tickets are non-refundable, and date changes are subject to availability and may incur additional charges.

6. Passenger Responsibilities Clients are responsible for providing accurate personal information exactly as it appears on their passport. Errors in names, passport numbers, or other details may result in denied entry to Machu Picchu, additional costs, or loss of services, without right to a refund. All required documents — particularly passports and, for students, a valid university ID — must be submitted immediately after booking. Delays in submitting these documents may result in ticket unavailability, for which no refund will be provided.

7. Itinerary Changes and Force Majeure Machu Picchu Team reserves the right to modify, suspend, or cancel any part of the itinerary due to circumstances beyond our control, including severe weather, strikes, road closures, government restrictions, or train service disruptions. In such cases, no refund or compensation is guaranteed, though we will always make every effort to offer a suitable alternative.

8. Risk Assumption By booking this tour, clients voluntarily acknowledge that high-altitude trekking involves inherent risks, including altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, physical exhaustion, and limited access to immediate medical services. Machu Picchu Team’s liability is limited except in cases of proven negligence or willful misconduct on our part.

9. Travel Insurance We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip, covering medical emergencies, evacuation, cancellations, lost luggage, and repatriation. This is best arranged in your home country prior to traveling to Peru.

10. Passenger Conduct All participants are expected to behave respectfully toward fellow travelers, staff, and the natural and cultural heritage along the route. Machu Picchu Team reserves the right to remove any participant whose conduct endangers the group, staff, or the environment. In such cases, no refund will be issued for any amount paid.

11. Claims and Complaints Any complaints or claims must be raised during the tour itself or within a maximum of 3 calendar days after its completion. After this period, the service will be considered accepted as satisfactory.

12. Legal Jurisdiction This agreement is governed by the laws of Peru. In the event of any dispute, both parties agree to first attempt resolution through conciliation in the city of Cusco. If no agreement is reached, the matter will be submitted to the competent courts of Cusco, Peru.
