Tour Overview

Salkantay Trek 2 Days and Humantay Lake: A Brief Yet Epic Andean Journey. The Salkantay Trek 2 Days and Humantay Lake is a short but unforgettable adventure, perfect for travelers who have already visited Machu Picchu and want to discover more of Peru’s breathtaking Andean landscapes. It’s ideal for those looking for a different kind of trek, one that combines high mountain scenery, comfort and some of the most spectacular natural attractions in the Cusco region.

Throughout the journey, you’ll hike surrounded by snow-capped peaks, dramatic valleys, waterfalls, rivers and glaciers, and visit two of the most beautiful lakes in the Andes: the intense turquoise Humantay Lake and the remote Salkantay Lake. One of the main highlights is crossing the Salkantay Pass at 4,650 meters, at the foot of the majestic Salkantay Mountain, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of one of the most impressive mountain landscapes in Peru.

Another special part of this experience is the night at our private campsite in Quiswarniyoc, where you’ll stay in our exclusive Sky Star Domes, 360° crystal domes with panoramic views of the starry sky. Surrounded by pristine nature, fresh mountain air and silence, this overnight stay offers the perfect combination of comfort, tranquility and a deep connection with the Andes.

Although it’s a shorter trek, the Salkantay Trek 2 Days offers a rich and rewarding experience for travelers who want to enjoy the Andes without committing to a longer expedition. With its mix of mountain adventure, natural beauty and unique accommodation, it’s one of the best short treks in Cusco. Want to combine the Salkantay route with Machu Picchu? Trip itinerary

We pick you up from your hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 am. Once all participants have been collected, we depart Cusco around 5:15 am for the 2-hour drive to the town of Mollepata, where we stop for breakfast and pay the 20-soles entrance fee to the local municipality. From there, we continue by vehicle for another hour to Soraypampa, where our muleteers and horses are waiting — they’ll carry all the camping gear, food, and each hiker’s 7 kg of personal belongings packed in duffel bags.

From Soraypampa, we begin a 2-hour uphill hike to the stunning Humantay Lake. Once there, you’ll have plenty of time to explore, take photos, and hear from your guide about the cultural and natural significance of this turquoise glacial lake. After taking in the views, we descend for about 2 hours to the exclusive Quiswarniyoc Private Camp, where a fresh, home-style lunch awaits.

In the afternoon, you’re free to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace. For those looking for more adventure, a short hike to the Salkantay Viewpoint offers a panoramic look at the region. If you’d rather unwind, you can relax in your private Sky Star Dome — a cozy glass igloo fitted with a mattress, pillow, sleeping pad, and soft evening lighting.

Set at 4,000 meters, Quiswarniyoc Camp is a scenic, exclusive site with short trails, mountain views, waterfalls, and even friendly llamas for photo opportunities. It’s the ideal place to disconnect, recharge, and soak in the beauty of the Andes before the trek’s most demanding day.

Day 1 Summary

  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Hiking distance: 10 km (approx. 6 miles)
  • Trekking duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Campsite elevation: 4,000 meters above sea level
  • Weather: Cold, windy nights during the dry season (May–August), with temperatures dropping as low as -5°C
  • Good to know: Day 1 serves as a great acclimatization warm-up, helping you prepare for Day 2 — the most challenging day of the trek

Day 1 Inclusions

  • Private transportation from Cusco to the trailhead
  • Meals included: breakfast, lunch, tea time, and dinner
  • Accommodation: Sky Star Domes with sleeping pads and pillows
  • Guide for the entire trek
  • Horse to carry your duffel bag (7 kg limit)

Overnight at Quiswarniyoc: Your Sky Star Domes at Quiswarniyoc sit at approximately 4,000 meters, with sweeping views of the surrounding glacier peaks — a spectacular spot for photography and for watching the sunrise and sunset.

Day 2 is the most demanding and rewarding stage of the trek, taking you to the highest point of the entire Salkantay Trail, with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and a stop at the pristine Salkantay Lake.

Around 5:00 am, you’ll be gently woken with a warm cup of coca tea, followed by time to repack before a hearty breakfast at 5:45 am. Shortly after, the trek begins with the ascent to Salkantay Pass, reaching 4,630 meters (15,190 ft). The climb to the summit takes about 3 to 4 hours at a steady, manageable pace.

At the top, you’ll have time to take in the panoramic mountain views, snap memorable photos, and hear from your guide about the Apus — the sacred mountain spirits of the Andes — including a brief traditional Andean ceremony to honor them.

After this experience, you’ll descend for about 2.5 hours back to Soraypampa, where transportation will be waiting to take you to Mollepata for a well-earned lunch. From there, you’ll return to Cusco by car — roughly a 2-hour drive — arriving back in the city around 6:00 pm.

Day 2 Summary

  • Difficulty level: Challenging (highest point of the trek)
  • Hiking distance: approx. 12 km round trip (Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Soraypampa)
  • Trekking duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Maximum elevation: 4,630 meters above sea level (Salkantay Pass)
  • Weather: Cold and windy at the pass, with possible light snow during the dry season (May–August)
  • Good to know: Dress in warm layers — this is the coldest and most physically demanding day of the trek

Day 2 Inclusions

  • Wake-up coca tea and breakfast at camp
  • Guide for the entire trek, including the Andean ceremony at the pass
  • Private transportation from Soraypampa to Mollepata and on to Cusco
  • Horse to carry your duffel bag (7 kg limit)
  • Lunch in Mollepata
  • Drop-off at your hotel in Cusco (approx. 6:00 pm)

Professional Trekking Guide

An experienced professional guide will accompany you throughout the entire journey, providing assistance, safety support, and valuable information about the Salkantay region, Humantay Lake, Andean culture, local communities, and the surrounding natural landscapes. The tour is conducted in English and Spanish.

Pack Horses and Muleteer Support

Our muleteers and pack horses transport the food, accommodation equipment, kitchen supplies, and other essential items required for the journey. This support allows you to hike more comfortably while carrying only a small daypack with your personal essentials.

Duffle Bag Service

During the pre-tour coordination, you will receive a duffle bag for your personal belongings. The bag will be transported by pack horse, allowing you to carry only the items you need during the day. Weight limits and packing instructions will be confirmed before departure.

Entrance to Humantay Lake

The package includes the entrance fee required to visit Humantay Lake, one of the most impressive natural attractions in the Cusco region. Your guide will accompany you during the hike and provide information about the lake, glaciers, surrounding mountains, and their importance in Andean culture.

Daily Snacks and Hot Drinks

Snacks are provided to help you maintain your energy during the trek. Hot drinks such as tea, coffee, and traditional herbal infusions are also served with meals and during the evening at the campsite.

Drinking Water During the Trek

Boiled and properly treated drinking water is provided at designated times during the tour. Travelers should bring a reusable bottle or hydration pack so it can be refilled when water is available.

First-Aid Kit and Emergency Oxygen

For your safety, your guide will carry a fully stocked first-aid kit and a portable oxygen tank throughout the trek. Our guides are trained to provide initial assistance in the event of altitude-related discomfort, minor injuries, or other unexpected situations.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included in the tour price. Although we follow strict safety procedures throughout the trek, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before arriving in Peru. Your policy should ideally cover medical emergencies, accidents, evacuation, trip cancellation, and other unexpected situations.

Personal Expenses and Optional Activities

Any personal expenses or services not specifically listed as included in the package must be covered by the traveler. This may include additional snacks and drinks, personal purchases, tips, optional activities, and any other extra services requested during the tour.

What to Bring for the 2-Day Salkantay Trek and Humantay Lake Tour

During the pre-trek coordination, we will provide you with a duffle bag for up to 7 kg (15 lb) of personal belongings. The duffle bag will be transported by pack horses, and you will have access to it at the campsite. During the day, you only need to carry your small daypack with your essential items

  • Hiking Boots: Bring sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good grip and ankle support. The trail includes uneven, rocky, and sometimes slippery terrain, so appropriate footwear is essential.
  • Small Daypack: Carry a lightweight daypack for your daily essentials, including water, snacks, sunscreen, rain gear, personal medication, and extra layers.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Bring a refillable water bottle or hydration system. You may also carry purification tablets or a portable water filter for additional convenience.
  • Energy Snacks: Although meals and daily snacks are included, you may wish to bring extra high-energy snacks such as granola bars, nuts, chocolate, dried fruit, or trail mix.
  • Layered Clothing: Mountain temperatures can change quickly, so dress in layers. We recommend a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm fleece or insulated jacket, and a waterproof outer layer.
  • Rain Protection: Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho, especially during the rainy season, as weather conditions can change without warning.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Bring a sun hat or cap and sunglasses with UV protection to protect yourself from the strong high-altitude sun.
  • Sunscreen: Use high-SPF sunscreen and reapply it regularly throughout the day, especially at higher elevations.
  • Insect Repellent: Bring insect repellent for warmer and lower sections of the route where mosquitoes or other insects may be present.
  • Extra Clothing: Pack a clean change of clothes, warm socks, and an additional thermal layer for the evening and early morning.
  • Warm Accessories: Gloves, a warm hat, and thermal socks are recommended, as temperatures can drop significantly at night.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Bring a headlamp or small flashlight for moving around the campsite before sunrise or after dark.
  • Trekking Poles: Trekking poles are highly recommended for balance and stability on steep ascents, descents, and uneven terrain.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Bring a camera or fully charged smartphone to capture the mountain landscapes, Humantay Lake, and the surrounding scenery.
  • Cash in Peruvian Soles: Carry a small amount of cash for personal purchases, local services, additional drinks, souvenirs, or any expenses not included in the package.
  • Personal Medication: Bring all prescribed medication and any personal medical supplies you may require during the trek.
  • Personal Essentials: Pack basic toiletries, a small towel, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, lip balm, and any other personal items you may need.

Trekking Poles: Highly Recommended

Trekking poles make a real difference on the Salkantay route. The climbs to Humantay Lake and the Salkantay Pass are steep and at high altitude, and the descents are long, rocky and sometimes muddy. Poles take pressure off your knees, give you more balance on loose ground and help you keep a steady rhythm when the air is thin.

You don’t need to bring your own: add a pair of trekking poles for $10 USD when you book, and we’ll have them ready for you on Day 1. Our poles are adjustable, so your guide can set them to your height before you start walking.

Especially useful if you:

  • have knee or joint problems
  • are not used to hiking in the mountains
  • want more stability on the steep downhill sections
  • are hiking in the rainy season (November to March), when the trail can be slippery
