TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Abra Málaga Downhill Biking (60 km) → Santa María Whitewater Rafting → Night in the Sky Star Domes

Pickup and transfer to Ollantaytambo
Day 1 of the adventure begins with pickup from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 am. We’ll drive for approximately 2 hours to the town of Ollantaytambo, where you’ll enjoy breakfast, which is included.

Transfer to the biking starting point (Abra Málaga)
After breakfast, we’ll continue in the same vehicle for another 45 minutes to the starting point of the biking route, Abra Málaga, located at 4,300 meters above sea level. Here, your guide will provide your bike, full safety equipment, and the necessary instructions for the downhill ride.

Downhill biking to Huamanmarca
The downhill bike ride takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, entirely downhill along a paved road, until reaching Huamanmarca. Upon arrival, you’ll leave your bike and safety gear behind and visit the Huamanmarca archaeological site, where your guide will explain its historical significance.

Transfer and lunch in Santa María
We’ll then take the vehicle for about 30 minutes to the town of Santa María, where you’ll enjoy a nutritious lunch, around 1:00 pm.

Rafting on the Urubamba River
After a short rest, we’ll head to the Urubamba River for a rafting excursion lasting approximately 1.5 hours. You’ll be provided with all necessary safety equipment; the river’s rapids are class III.

Cocalmayo Hot Springs
After this incredible rafting adventure, we’ll continue by vehicle for 45 minutes to the hot springs area in Santa Teresa, where you’ll have approximately 1.5 hours to enjoy the Cocalmayo hot springs (entrance fee of S/10, not included).

Arrival in Lucmabamba – Sky Star Domes
After enjoying the hot springs, we’ll continue by vehicle for another 45 minutes to Lucmabamba, home to the Sky Star Domes, where you’ll spend the night under the stars. Upon arrival, you’ll settle into your crystal dome. Around 7:30 pm, dinner will be served at the Lucmabamba lodge, followed by a short briefing on Day 2’s activities before heading to bed.

  • Important Note

Throughout the day’s activities, the support vehicle will always be available to the group, so you can leave your belongings inside while activities take place. This vehicle will also stay behind the group during the biking portion for safety purposes, in case any participant prefers not to continue and would rather ride in the vehicle instead.

Day 1 – Tour Inclusions

  • Hotel pickup between 5:30 and 6:00 am
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Activities: biking, rafting, and Cocalmayo hot springs
  • Overnight accommodation: Sky Star Domes in Lucmabamba
  • Full safety equipment for all activities
  • Luggage transport: no need to carry or keep track of your belongings during the activities
  • Tour Guide: Professional guide for the entire tour, including specialized guides for mountain biking and river rafting

Wake-up and breakfast in Lucmabamba
Day 2 of the adventure begins with wake-up around 5:30 am. Breakfast will be served at the Lucmabamba lodge around 6:00 am.

Coffee tour with a local family
After breakfast, we’ll head to a local family’s home for the coffee tour, since Lucmabamba is known for growing some of the best organic coffee in the Cusco region. During this tour, you’ll learn about the coffee cultivation and production process, and you’ll also have the chance to taste some of the finest organic coffee in Cusco. This activity lasts approximately 1 hour with the local family in Lucmabamba.

Zipline
After the coffee tour, we’ll head to the zipline base, located 10 minutes from the Lucmabamba lodge. Once there, you’ll receive a safety briefing and be fitted with all the necessary safety equipment for this activity, which lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

The zipline circuit features 5 different cables, stretched over the Salkantay River and anchored between the mountains: the longest cable measures 900 meters, and the shortest 700 meters. The route also includes a 300-meter-long Tibetan bridge, suspended roughly 500 meters above the Salkantay River.

Transfer and lunch in Hidroeléctrica
After the zipline, you’ll be transported by vehicle for approximately 45 minutes to Hidroeléctrica, where you’ll enjoy a nutritious lunch at a local restaurant.

Hike to Machu Picchu Pueblo
After lunch, you’ll begin the hike to Machu Picchu Pueblo, following the railway line for approximately 3 hours. This hike covers 11 kilometers, with scenery that runs along the base of Machu Picchu — in some sections, you can even catch glimpses of the citadel itself as you walk.

Arrival in Machu Picchu Pueblo
After the 3-hour hike, we’ll arrive in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), usually between 4:00 and 5:00 pm, where you’ll be taken to your accommodation. You’ll have time to shower and rest before dinner, scheduled for around 7:00 pm at a restaurant in town. After dinner, you’ll receive a short briefing on the following day’s tour before heading to bed.

  • Important Note

During the hiking section from Hidroeléctrica to Machu Picchu Pueblo, you will need to carry your personal belongings with you, since there is no vehicle service along this stretch. However, if you prefer, you can leave your luggage at the restaurant in Hidroeléctrica to have it sent by train, as there is a train service that runs from Hidroeléctrica to Machu Picchu Pueblo. This train departs from Hidroeléctrica at 4:00 pm, and sending luggage by train carries an additional cost of 10 to 20 soles. For this reason, we recommend packing only what’s necessary, so you can carry it comfortably with you during this section of the hike.

Day 2 – Tour Inclusions

  • Coffee tour in Lucmabamba
  • Zipline: all 5 cables + Tibetan bridge
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Transportation from the zipline base to Hidroeléctrica
  • Hotel accommodation in Machu Picchu Pueblo
  • Guide for the entire tour, plus specialized guides for the zipline activity

Visit to the Machu Picchu Citadel
The last day of the tour is dedicated to visiting the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. This visit is scheduled according to the entry time and circuit indicated on your ticket, details of which will be sent by email upon confirmation of your reservation. The visit is usually scheduled for 6:00 am, allowing you to enjoy sunrise at Machu Picchu.

Wake-up and breakfast
Wake-up at the hotel is typically at 4:00 am. After breakfast, you’ll need to head to the Machu Picchu citadel, for which there are two options:

  • On foot: from Machu Picchu Pueblo to the citadel, consisting of a 30-minute walk on flat ground followed by 1 hour of stairs until reaching the main entrance. This hike usually begins around 4:30 am, in order to arrive by 6:00 am.
  • By bus: the bus departs from town at 5:30 am, with a ride of approximately 25 minutes. This service has an additional cost of $12 USD, which can be purchased in town, either the same day or the night before.

Whichever option you choose, the goal is to arrive at the main entrance of Machu Picchu at the time indicated on your entry ticket.

Guided tour of the citadel
Once at the entrance gate, your guide will accompany you through the guided tour inside the citadel, according to the time and circuit assigned on your ticket. The guided tour lasts approximately 1 to 2 hours, depending on the assigned circuit. A specialized guide will walk you through the history and architecture of Machu Picchu.

Optional hikes: Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain
After the guided tour, those who booked the additional ticket for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain will receive the necessary instructions to complete the climb (keep in mind these tickets must be booked well in advance). If you didn’t book this additional activity, you’ll proceed with the return to Cusco after the guided tour.

Train return option
Those who chose the train return will need to head back to Machu Picchu Pueblo, either on foot or by bus. Once in town, you’ll have free time to explore before boarding the 2:30 pm or 2:55 pm train to Ollantaytambo (approximately 1.5 hours). In Ollantaytambo, our transport will be waiting at the station to take you back to Cusco. The tour ends at our office around 7:00 pm, concluding the 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail.

Car return option
Those who chose the car return will need to hike from the Machu Picchu citadel down to Hidroeléctrica, a walk of approximately 3 hours. In Hidroeléctrica, your return vehicle will be waiting, departing at 3:00 pm. The drive to Cusco takes approximately 6 hours, arriving at our office around 10:00 pm, bringing the tour to a close.

Our office location
Machu Picchu Team’s office is located in the heart of Cusco, at Plaza Regocijo, just one block from Cusco’s main square (Plaza de Armas).

  • Important Note

The departure time from Machu Picchu Pueblo depends on your assigned entry time to the citadel. Your guide will provide the necessary instructions the day before your visit. Regardless of your assigned time or circuit, you will always have a guided tour service inside the citadel — Machu Picchu Team will assign you a guide for your visit.

Also, keep your return option (train or car) in mind when planning your visit to Machu Picchu. If you’d like to add the optional hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, we recommend choosing the train return, as it will give you enough time to complete these activities.

Day 3 – Tour Inclusions

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Entrance ticket to the Machu Picchu Citadel (circuit and entry time confirmed at the time of booking)
  • Guided tour of the Machu Picchu Citadel (a professional guide is always included, regardless of your assigned circuit or entry time)
  • Return by Train: Train ticket from Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) to Ollantaytambo (departure at approximately 2:30 PM or 2:55 PM, subject to availability), followed by private transportation from Ollantaytambo to Cusco (approximately 2 hours)
  • Return by Car: Shared tourist transportation from Hidroeléctrica to Cusco (departure at 3:00 PM, approximately 6 hours)

What’s Included in the Inca Jungle Trail 3 days to Machu Picchu

Below, we detail everything included in the Inca Jungle Trail 3 days package to Machu Picchu, so you have complete clarity on the services covered by the price you paid for the tour. Here is a detailed overview of everything that’s included in your Inca Jungle Trail 3 days experience with Machu Picchu Team:

Pre-Trip Briefing

Your package includes a pre-trip briefing one day before the start of the tour, at 6:00 pm, at the Machu Picchu Team office, located one block from the Plaza de Armas. This briefing is led by the guide who will accompany you throughout the 3 day tour, and is meant to finalize details and make sure you’re well prepared for the adventure. It’s also the perfect opportunity to ask any questions directly to your guide. If you haven’t yet paid the full balance of your tour, you can also complete your payment at this time. If you’re unable to attend the briefing in person, your guide will contact you via the WhatsApp number provided at the time of booking, to share all the necessary information.

Hotel Pickup

The service includes pickup from your hotel in Cusco to begin the tour, between 5:30 and 6:00 am, whether you’re staying at a hotel or an Airbnb in the city. If you’re staying in Ollantaytambo, we can also pick you up from there, around 7:30 am, since the vehicle passes through town on its way.

Drop-off at Machu Picchu Team Office in Cusco

At the end of the tour, the service includes drop-off at the Machu Picchu Team office, located very close to Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. This way, you can pick up any luggage you may have left with us. If you’d prefer to be dropped off in Ollantaytambo instead, this option is also available. This applies whether you return by car or by train — in either case, the tour’s final point will be our office in Cusco (unless you request to be dropped off in Ollantaytambo).

Entrance to the Machu Picchu Citadel

The tour price includes your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. The entry time and circuit type will be confirmed based on availability at the time of booking; however, this usually corresponds to the 6:00 am entry time and Circuit 2 – Classic Circuit / Route 2-A. Both the entry time and circuit are subject to availability, and both will be confirmed once your reservation is made. Your ticket will then be sent to your email.

Professional English and Spanish-Speaking Guides

Throughout the entire 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail, you’ll be accompanied by a professional adventure guide fluent in both English and Spanish, who will stay with you for the whole journey. In addition, the tour includes specialized guides for rafting and zip-lining, ensuring each activity is carried out safely, as well as a specialist guide for the guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel.

Guided visit to the Machu Picchu Citadel

Your visit to Machu Picchu includes a 1 to 2-hour guided tour with one of our expert Machu Picchu guides. This guided tour is included regardless of the circuit or entry time assigned to your tour. Even if you purchased your Machu Picchu entrance ticket on your own, the guided tour inside the citadel is included as part of your 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail package.

All Required Transportation for the Tour

All transportation services necessary to complete this tour are included, such as the transfer from Cusco to the tour’s starting point, transportation to accommodation and activity locations, transportation from Hidroeléctrica to Cusco for those choosing the car return, and transportation from Ollantaytambo to Cusco for those choosing the train return. The only service not included is the bus ticket from Machu Picchu Pueblo to the Machu Picchu citadel, as this is an optional service.

One Night´s Accommodation at the Sky Star Domes in Lucmabamba Hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes)

The package includes one night’s accommodation at the Sky Star Domes in Lucmabamba: crystal domes with 360° panoramic views, perfect for enjoying nature and the scenery as you rest. These domes come equipped with mattresses, pillows, and a sleeping bag, so you can enjoy a truly panoramic night at the Lucmabamba lodge.

Hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes)

The package includes one night’s accommodation at a basic hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo. The accommodation includes hot water showers, wifi, towels, and soap — a simple, comfortable hotel to spend the night before visiting Machu Picchu.

Meals

The tour includes all the meals required for the 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu, including the very first breakfast. In total, the package includes 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners, served at local restaurants and at the Lucmabamba lodge. These meals are specially prepared for this type of adventure, offering high nutritional value and generous portions to keep you well-fueled throughout the journey.

We also offer vegetarian and vegan options as part of the service. If you have any special dietary needs or restrictions, simply let us know in advance so we can coordinate and prepare meals suited to your requirements.

All Activities: Biking, Zipline, and Rafting

Biking, zip-lining, and rafting are all included in the 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu. Since these are the most anticipated activities among travelers, we include all of them to make your adventure truly memorable. For the zipline, the service includes all 5 cables plus the Tibetan bridge, with all activities organized and led by specialized professional guides.

Return from Machu Picchu to Cusco Included

The return trip from Machu Picchu to Cusco is included, depending on the return option you chose:

  • Train return: includes the train ticket from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo, departing at either 2:30 pm or 2:55 pm, depending on availability, plus transportation from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.
  • Car return: includes transportation from Hidroeléctrica to Cusco, departing at 3:00 pm.

The type of return included will depend on the package selected at the time of booking, whether it’s the 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail with car return or the 3-Day Inca Jungle Trail with train return.

First Aid Equipment

Each guide is equipped with a first aid kit and an oxygen tank, to assist you in the event of any emergency. Our guides are also trained in first aid response. Additionally, our vehicles are available, especially during the first day of the tour, to assist you in case of an emergency and transport you to the nearest hospital for professional medical attention.

Not Included

Lunch on Day 3

Lunch after visiting Machu Picchu is not included. This gives you the freedom to explore the town’s varied culinary options and choose a meal that fits your taste and budget. If you’re returning by train, you can purchase lunch in Machu Picchu Pueblo before boarding the train. If you’re returning by car, you can purchase lunch in Hidroeléctrica before boarding the vehicle back to Cusco.

Entrance to the Thermal Baths

If you’d like to relax in the hot springs of Santa Teresa, please note that the entrance fee (10 soles per person) is not included and must be paid on-site. This gives you the flexibility to decide whether or not to enjoy this optional experience..

Tips for Staff

Gratuities for your guide and support staff are not included and are entirely optional. While not mandatory, tips are a great way to show appreciation for exceptional service.

Drinking Water

Drinking water is not provided during the tour. However, bottled and mineral water is readily available for purchase at local shops along the route, allowing you to stay hydrated throughout your journey. We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and purchasing water at each stop to stay properly hydrated, especially given the physical demands of activities like biking, rafting, and hiking, as well as the changes in altitude and climate throughout the tour. On average, we suggest budgeting for at least 1 to 2 liters of water per day, more if you’re particularly active or sensitive to heat.

What to Pack

To undertake the Inca Jungle Trail, you only need to carry essential items in your backpack. There is no luggage transfer service, but this is generally not an issue as you won’t need many items. It’s important to note that during activities like biking, zip-lining, and rafting, backpacks are left in secure locations while you participate in the activities. You will only need to carry them during the walking sections. However, if you prefer not to carry anything, you can coordinate with the guide to arrange transportation for your backpack at an additional cost, although this is rarely necessary as the walks are relatively easy and don’t require you to carry much. Below, we detail the essential items you should bring for the Inca Jungle Trail.

STUDENT PRICE:

HOW TO ACCESS THE STUDENT PRICE FOR A TOUR TO MACHU PICCHU?

The Peruvian government offers discounts for students on entrance tickets to Machu Picchu. Consequently, in our tours to Machu Picchu, we provide a reduced rate for students. To qualify for this special rate, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Student Age: You must be under 25 years old at the time of your visit to Machu Picchu. This age limit is aimed at benefiting undergraduate students.
  • Material and Format of the Student Card: The card must be a physical plastic document, similar to a credit card, with all the required information printed on it. Cards made of other materials or with information added via stickers or not printed are not accepted.
  • Required Information on the Card: The card must include the following printed information: details of the university, personal information of the student, the student’s photograph, and a validity date not exceeding one year from the date of your visit. For example, if you plan to visit in 2024, the card should not expire before 2025 and must be valid during the visit.
  • Note on the ISIC Card: Although the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is recognized in many countries, it is not accepted by the Peruvian government for student discounts at Machu Picchu. Just as a passport cannot be replaced by any other type of identification in international procedures, the student card cannot be substituted by an ISIC or any other document for discounts in Peru.

The policy of the Peruvian government is stringent regarding the accreditation of students. It is imperative to present a card that fulfills these criteria to be eligible for student-priced tickets because, upon entering Machu Picchu, you will be required to show the physical student card. If you do not meet these requirements upon arrival at Machu Picchu, there is a significant risk of being denied entry and having to pay the full ticket price, depending on availability. Therefore, ensuring that your student card adheres to Peruvian regulations is crucial before booking your tour to as student Machu Picchu.
