Inca Trail Availability

INCA TRAIL AVAILABILITY 2026

Inca Trail availability is essential when planning your trek to Machu Picchu. Because the Inca Trail is one of Peru’s most popular hiking routes, access is strictly controlled through a limited permit system. Checking availability in advance helps you choose your preferred travel date, secure the required permit, and organize your journey to the famous archaeological site of Machu Picchu.

Inca Trail Availability 2026

INCA TRAIL AVAILABILITY 2026

Planning your Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in 2026 requires advance preparation because access to the Inca Trail network is strictly controlled by the Peruvian government. Permits are limited each day and are issued through the official reservation system for authorized tour operators and travel agencies. The 2026 reservation process officially opened on November 17, 2025.

Inca Trail Permits for 2026

For 2026, the official daily carrying capacity established for the Inca Trail network is:

  • Routes 1, 2, 3 and 4: up to 500 users per day – INCA TRAIL 4 DAYS
  • Route 5 – Km 104: up to 250 users per day – INCA TRAIL 2 DAYS
  • Route 6: up to 100 users per day – INCA TRAIL + SALKANTAY TREK

These limits include the users authorized under each route’s official capacity, so the number of spaces available to travelers is limited and can sell out well in advance, particularly during the busiest months.

Inca Trail Availability Changes Every Day

Availability depends on your exact travel date and the specific Inca Trail route you want to book. Once the available permits for a particular date are sold out, additional spaces cannot simply be created by a travel agency. For this reason, we strongly recommend checking Inca Trail Availability 2026 before purchasing flights, hotels, or other non-refundable travel arrangements if hiking the Inca Trail is one of the main reasons for your trip to Peru.

Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The traditional multi-day Inca Trail remains one of the most popular trekking routes in Peru. Because permits are limited, travelers planning to hike during popular months should reserve as early as possible. High-demand travel periods generally sell faster, particularly dates that coincide with Peru’s main tourism season. Your reservation should therefore be confirmed as soon as you have fixed travel dates.

Short Inca Trail – Km 104

The Short Inca Trail, commonly used for the 1-Day and 2-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, begins at Km 104. The official carrying capacity for Route 5 is currently 250 users per day. This route is an excellent alternative for travelers who want to experience part of the historic Inca Trail, visit archaeological sites such as Wiñay Wayna, and approach Machu Picchu through the Inca Trail network without completing the traditional multi-day trek.

February Closure

The Inca Trail network closes during February for annual conservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation work. In 2026, the network reopened on March 1 following the completion of these works. Therefore, the traditional Inca Trail is not available for trekking during February.

Machu Picchu Entry for Inca Trail Travelers in 2026

An important change for 2026 is that visitors arriving at Machu Picchu through the Inca Trail network can continue their visit through Machu Picchu Route 3-B, using a limited allocation of tickets specifically reserved for Inca Trail visitors. These tickets must be reserved and paid in advance through authorized agencies. This means that your Inca Trail permit and your Machu Picchu access must be carefully coordinated as part of the reservation process.

When Should You Book the Inca Trail for 2026?

If the Inca Trail is an important part of your Peru trip, booking early is highly recommended. Permits are limited by government regulation and popular dates can become unavailable long before the departure date. At Machu Picchu Team, we recommend choosing your preferred departure date as early as possible and having one or two alternative dates available in case your first choice is already sold out.

How to Check Inca Trail Availability 2026

Before booking, select your preferred Inca Trail departure date and check the availability calendar. Availability should always be treated as real-time and subject to confirmation because permits may be reserved by other travelers at any moment. Once availability is confirmed, the reservation must be completed with the required traveler information so the corresponding official permits can be secured.

Important: Inca Trail Permits Are Limited

Inca Trail availability is controlled by the Peruvian authorities. Machu Picchu Team cannot increase the official number of permits or create additional spaces when a date is sold out. For this reason, travelers should avoid waiting until they arrive in Cusco to organize the Inca Trail, especially if they are traveling during a busy period.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THE INCA TRAIL

When preparing for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we recommend packing as light as possible and bringing only the essential items you will need during the trek. If your tour includes an extra porter, your personal belongings will be carried from Km 82 on Day 1 to the Wiñay Wayna campsite on Day 3. We recommend keeping your personal duffle weight to a maximum of approximately 5 kg / 10 lb, including your clothing and sleeping bag. You should still carry a small daypack with the items you will need throughout the day, such as water, rain protection, sunscreen, personal documents, and other essentials. Because weather conditions along the Inca Trail can change quickly and are difficult to predict, it is very important to protect your belongings from rain and moisture. We strongly recommend bringing a waterproof backpack cover or rain cover. For additional protection, place your clothing, sleeping bag, electronics, and other personal belongings inside waterproof or plastic bags before packing them. This simple precaution can help keep your equipment dry even during unexpected rain. Proper packing will make your trek more comfortable and allow you to enjoy the Inca Trail experience without carrying unnecessary weight.

WHY BOOK EARLY FOR THE INCA TRAIL?

There is a daily limit of 500 permits for the Classic Inca Trail, and this total includes not only travelers but also tour guides, professional cooks, porters, and other authorized trekking staff. Because the number of permits is limited and demand is consistently high, spaces can sell out several months in advance. If you are planning to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we recommend booking 4 to 6 months in advance, especially for the high-demand period between April and July. During these months, availability can disappear quickly, so early planning is essential if you want to secure your preferred travel date. The Inca Trail is one of the most iconic trekking experiences in the Peruvian Andes and a true bucket-list adventure for many travelers. However, it requires careful preparation because access is strictly regulated. To hike the official Inca Trail, you must make your reservation through an authorized and licensed tour operator, which will arrange the required permits and coordinate the necessary trekking logistics for your journey to Machu Picchu.

Tips and Extra Money

It is important to carry some extra cash in Peruvian soles during the Inca Trail. We recommend bringing approximately S/200 to S/300 for personal expenses, small purchases, or unexpected situations along the route.

In some sections of the trail, local families operate small markets or stalls where travelers may be able to purchase items such as bottled water, snacks, chocolate, soft drinks, and other basic supplies.

Having cash available is especially useful because card payments are generally not practical along the trekking route. Carrying small-denomination bills and coins can also make purchases easier.
