How to Dress for the Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour
The Rainbow Mountain ATV Tour from Cusco takes place at high altitude, where temperatures can be very cold in the early morning and weather conditions may change quickly. Although the ATV significantly reduces the walking distance, travelers must still complete a final uphill walk to reach the main viewpoint. Wearing the right clothing will help you stay warm, comfortable, and protected from the sun, wind, rain, dust, and cold throughout the experience.
What to Wear
- Dress in layers: Wear several light layers that can be added or removed as the temperature changes during the day.
- Comfortable hiking pants: Choose flexible, durable, and quick-drying pants suitable for riding an ATV and walking at high altitude.
- Hiking shoes or boots: Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip and ankle support.
- Warm waterproof jacket: Bring a jacket that protects you from strong wind, low temperatures, and possible rain or snow.
- Thermal base layer: A warm long-sleeved shirt or thermal layer is recommended, especially during the early-morning departure.
- Warm hat or beanie: Protect your head and ears from the cold and wind.
- Gloves: Warm gloves are useful during the ATV ride and at the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.
- Neck buff or scarf: This provides additional protection from cold air, wind, and dust.
- UV-protective sunglasses: Sunglasses help protect your eyes from strong sunlight and dust along the ATV route.
Avoid wearing jeans, sandals, flip-flops, open shoes, or loose clothing. These items may be uncomfortable, provide limited protection, and are not suitable for operating an ATV.
What to Carry in Your Backpack
- Drinking water: Carry enough water to remain hydrated throughout the activity.
- High-energy snacks: Bring energy bars, nuts, chocolate, or dried fruit for additional energy.
- High-SPF sunscreen: Sun exposure is very strong at high altitude, even on cloudy days.
- Rain poncho: Weather can change suddenly, particularly during the rainy season.
- Extra warm layer: Carry a fleece, sweater, or lightweight down jacket in case temperatures drop.
- Personal medication: Bring any prescribed medicine and any medication you normally use for altitude-related discomfort.
- Camera or smartphone: Carry your device in a protective case to take photographs and videos.
- Cash in Peruvian soles: You will need cash for the Rainbow Mountain entrance fee, optional horse rental, beverages, snacks, tips, and personal purchases.
- Original passport or identification: Carry valid identification in case it is required at a control point.
- Waterproof bag or cover: Protect your passport, phone, camera, and other valuables from rain, mud, and dust.
Use a small, comfortable backpack and carry only the essential items needed for the tour.
