TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01:

Cusco – Pacchanta – Ausangate 7 Lakes – Pacchanta – Cusco

  • Hotel Pick-Up in Cusco (4:30 – 5:00 AM) Your adventure begins early with a comfortable pick-up directly from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco. Our driver will collect you between 4:30 and 5:00 AM depending on your location within the city. Once everyone is on board, we set off towards one of the most breathtaking corners of the Peruvian Andes.
  • Scenic Drive to Pacchanta We begin with an approximately two-hour scenic drive through the stunning Andean countryside, heading towards the village of Pacchanta. Along the way, you will be treated to sweeping views of snow-capped peaks, traditional highland communities, and vast open landscapes that set the tone perfectly for the adventure ahead.
  • Drive to the Trailhead & Andean Breakfast From Tinki, we continue by vehicle for approximately one more hour, gradually gaining altitude as we make our way to the official starting point of the hike. Upon arrival, we stop for a hearty Andean breakfast — a warm and energizing meal to fuel your body and prepare you for the trail ahead.
  • The Hike Begins — Ascent to the First Lake With breakfast done and energy levels high, we set off on the trail. The first section of the hike involves a gentle uphill climb of approximately one and a half hours, gradually ascending through breathtaking high-altitude scenery. The effort is absolutely worth it — as you crest the hill, the first of the seven lakes comes into view, its vivid colors shimmering against the dramatic backdrop of glaciers and towering Andean peaks.
  • Exploration of the Seven Lakes From the first lake onwards, the trail becomes largely flat or downhill, making the rest of the hike much more comfortable and enjoyable. One by one, each lake reveals itself in all its natural splendor — each one unique in color, shape, and character, framed by the majestic Ausangate massif, one of the most sacred mountains in the Andes. You will have plenty of time to explore, take photos, and soak in the extraordinary scenery at each lake, with your bilingual guide sharing fascinating insights about the geology, ecology, and cultural significance of this remarkable landscape throughout.
  • Buffet Lunch After completing the lake circuit, we sit down to a well-deserved traditional Andean buffet lunch, prepared with fresh local ingredients. The menu includes hearty soups, authentic Peruvian dishes, fresh salads, and vegetarian options — the perfect way to refuel and recharge after a rewarding day on the trail.
  • Relaxation at the Thermal Baths As a wonderful reward after the hike, you will have the opportunity to unwind in the natural thermal baths, soaking your tired muscles in warm mineral-rich waters while enjoying an absolutely breathtaking view of the Ausangate Glacier rising majestically in the background. It is one of those rare, magical moments that makes the whole journey unforgettable.
  • Return Drive to Cusco (approx. 3 hours) Refreshed and fully satisfied, we begin the three-hour return journey back to Cusco, passing once more through the dramatic Andean landscapes that made the morning drive so memorable. We arrive back in Cusco in the early evening, dropping you off near the Main Square — tired, fulfilled, and carrying memories that will last a lifetime.

Travel in modern, well-maintained vehicles and enjoy the spectacular Andean scenery along the way — all logistics are handled for you from start to finish.
  • Andean Breakfast: Kick off your adventure with a hearty and energizing breakfast served along the route, featuring fresh fruit juice, hot chocolate, coffee or tea, seasonal fruit salad, and your choice of bread or pancakes with butter and jam — the perfect fuel before tackling the trail.

The menu includes hearty soups, authentic Peruvian specialties, fresh salads, and vegetarian options to suit all dietary preferences — because a great adventure deserves a great meal.
  • Small Group Experience: We keep our groups between 14 and 16 people, with a maximum of 18 travelers per departure. Smaller groups mean more personalized attention, better interaction with your guide, a more comfortable experience on the trail, and a deeper connection with the landscape and culture surrounding you.
  • Expert Bilingual Guide: Your tour is led by a professional bilingual guide (English & Spanish) who will accompany you throughout the entire day. Beyond navigating the trail safely, your guide will bring the landscape to life by sharing fascinating insights into the geology, history, local culture, and the spiritual significance of the mighty Ausangate Mountain — making your experience as enriching as it is memorable.
  • Safety Equipment: Your well-being is our top priority. We carry a fully stocked first-aid kit and an oxygen tank throughout the entire tour to assist with any altitude-related symptoms or minor incidents along the trail — so you can hike with complete confidence and peace of mind.

From the moment we pick you up to the moment we drop you off, every detail is taken care of so you can focus entirely on what matters most — experiencing one of the most awe-inspiring natural landscapes the Peruvian Andes has to offer.

Not Included

To help you plan and prepare for the day, here is a clear breakdown of what is not covered in the tour price:

  • Ausangate 7 Lakes Entrance Fee: The entrance ticket to the Ausangate 7 Lakes area is not included in the tour price and must be paid directly at the checkpoint upon arrival. This fee is charged by the local government and surrounding communities and goes directly towards the conservation and maintenance of this protected natural area. Please bring cash in soles, as card payments are not accepted at the site.
Visitor TypeEntrance Fee
International visitors20 soles ($6 USD)
Peruvian nationals10 soles
  • Thermal Baths Entrance Fee: After the hike, you will have the opportunity to relax and soak in the natural thermal baths — one of the most enjoyable highlights of the day. The entrance fee is 5 soles per person and must be paid in cash in soles directly at the site. Cards are not accepted.
  • Personal Travel Insurance: We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip to cover any unforeseen circumstances, medical expenses, flight cancellations, or trip interruptions. This is not included in the tour price and is the sole responsibility of each traveler.
  • Personal Gear & Equipment: Any personal hiking equipment such as trekking poles, extra warm clothing, rain gear, or personal medications are not provided and should be brought by each traveler individually. Please refer to our “What to Pack” section for a full list of recommended items.
  • Tips for Guides & Staff (optional but appreciated): Gratuities are not included in the tour price. If you feel your guide and team went above and beyond to make your experience truly special, a tip is always warmly appreciated — though entirely at your discretion.
  • Any services not explicitly mentioned in the inclusions list are not part of the tour package and would be at your own personal expense, including additional snacks, drinks, or any purchases made along the way.

We recommend bringing a reasonable amount of cash in soles on the day of the tour to cover entrance fees, the thermal baths, and any optional extras or personal expenses along the way.

What to Pack

WHAT TO PACK & WEAR

Being well-prepared for the Ausangate 7 Lakes tour will make a significant difference to your comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment on the trail. The route reaches high altitudes where weather conditions can change rapidly and the sun is far more intense than at lower elevations. Here is everything we recommend bringing on the day:

  • Sturdy Hiking Shoes or Boots: Good quality trekking shoes or hiking boots with solid grip and ankle support are essential for this trail. The terrain can be uneven, rocky, and steep in sections, so proper footwear is non-negotiable. Sandals and casual shoes are not suitable for this hike.
  • Warm & Layered Clothing: Temperatures at high altitude can shift dramatically throughout the day — mornings are cold and afternoons can warm up considerably once the sun is out. We strongly recommend wearing multiple layers that you can easily add or remove as needed. A good combination would be a thermal base layer, a fleece mid-layer, and a warm down jacket for the early morning and higher sections of the trail.
  • Lightweight & Breathable Clothing: Once the sun is out and temperatures rise during the hike, lightweight and breathable clothing will keep you comfortable and prevent overheating. Having the right balance of warm and light layers is key to an enjoyable day on the trail.
  • Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho: Mountain weather is unpredictable, and brief showers can occur at any time — even during the dry season. A lightweight waterproof jacket or rain poncho is a must-have to keep you dry and comfortable if the weather turns.
  • Hat & Sunglasses: Both are absolutely essential. A warm beanie is ideal for the cold early morning start, while a sun hat or cap is important once temperatures rise during the hike. UV-protective sunglasses are equally important, as the glare from glaciers and open landscapes can be intense at altitude.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 90+ recommended): UV rays at high altitude are significantly stronger than at sea level and can cause sunburn very quickly — even on cloudy days. Apply sunscreen generously before leaving and reapply regularly throughout the hike. Do not underestimate this.
  • Water & Snacks: Staying well-hydrated is especially important at high altitude. Bring at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water and pack high-energy snacks such as nuts, granola bars, chocolate, dried fruit, or energy gels to keep your energy levels up along the trail. There are no vendors on the route, so come well prepared.
  • Swimsuit & Towel: Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit and a small towel if you plan to enjoy the natural thermal baths after the hike — one of the most relaxing and rewarding highlights of the entire day. Soaking in warm mineral-rich waters with views of the Ausangate Glacier is an experience not to be missed.
  • Small Daypack / Backpack: A comfortable, well-fitted daypack is ideal for carrying your water, snacks, extra layers, sunscreen, and camera throughout the hike. Keep it as light as possible to reduce fatigue on the trail.
  • Camera or Smartphone: The Ausangate 7 Lakes area offers some of the most spectacular and photogenic landscapes in all of Peru. Make sure your camera or smartphone is fully charged and has enough storage — you will want to capture every moment.
  • Cash in Soles: Bring enough cash in soles to cover the entrance fees for the lakes (20 soles) and the thermal baths (5 soles), as well as any optional extras, tips, or personal purchases along the way. Cards are not accepted at any of these sites.

The right preparation makes all the difference — dress smart, pack light, and get ready to experience one of the most breathtaking and unforgettable landscapes the Peruvian Andes has to offer.
