Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Paucartambo → Cloud Forest → Pilcopata
Your Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days begins early in the morning, with hotel pick-up in Cusco between approximately 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM. From Cusco, we begin our overland journey toward the eastern slopes of the Andes, gradually leaving the city behind and entering increasingly remote landscapes.
Our first important stop is at the Ninamarca Chullpas, ancient funerary towers located at approximately 3,750 meters / 12,300 feet above sea level. After a short visit, we continue toward Paucartambo, a picturesque Andean town known for its traditional character, colonial bridge, and strong folkloric identity.
From Paucartambo, the road climbs toward Acjanaco, the highest point of our route at approximately 4,000 meters / 13,123 feet. From here, we begin a dramatic descent into the cloud forest, one of the most biologically diverse sections of the Manu region.
As the altitude decreases, the landscape changes significantly. The forest becomes increasingly dense and humid, with orchids, heliconias, mosses, ferns, and other tropical vegetation appearing along the road. During this section, we will stop for short walks and wildlife observation.
One of the main objectives is to look for the famous Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Peru’s national bird, which may be seen performing its characteristic courtship display. Depending on luck and natural conditions, we may also encounter trogons, quetzals, monkeys, and possibly the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus).
By late afternoon, we arrive in Pilcopata, located at approximately 550 meters / 1,805 feet above sea level. Here we settle into a local jungle lodge equipped with private bathrooms and hot-water showers, allowing you to rest comfortably after the first day of travel and wildlife exploration.

After breakfast at the lodge, we continue by vehicle for approximately 45 minutes toward the port of Atalaya. Along the way, the road passes through tropical agricultural areas where you may see coca plantations, fruit trees, orchids, and other vegetation typical of the lower Amazonian foothills.
At Atalaya, we board a motorized boat and begin navigating the Upper Madre de Dios River. This river journey marks an important transition into the deeper Amazonian environment and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation from the water.
During navigation, we may observe numerous bird species such as herons, kingfishers, vultures, and other river and forest birds. The riverbanks can also reveal monkeys, turtles, caimans, capybaras, and other wildlife depending on natural conditions and luck.
We continue toward Boca Manu, located at approximately 280 meters / 919 feet above sea level, before proceeding toward the Limonal ranger checkpoint, where the group enters the protected Manu Reserved Zone.
As we travel deeper into Manu, wildlife observation becomes increasingly rewarding. Along the riverbanks, we may see groups of turtles resting on logs or beaches, white caimans, capybaras, monkeys, and a great variety of birds. Larger mammals such as jaguars are present in this ecosystem, although sightings are rare and can never be guaranteed.
Later in the afternoon, we arrive near Cocha Otorongo, at approximately 250 meters / 820 feet above sea level, where we settle into our jungle accommodation.
After organizing our belongings, we take a forest walk toward the lake and visit the approximately 30-meter observation tower. From this elevated viewpoint, we can scan the surrounding forest and wetlands for birds, monkeys, turtles, giant river otters, and other animals that inhabit the area.
We spend the night in the lodge, sleeping in beds protected by mosquito nets, with bathroom and shower facilities available for guests.

Today is dedicated to exploring some of the most important wildlife areas within the Manu Reserved Zone.
After breakfast, we travel toward Cocha Salvador, located approximately 30 minutes from the Cocha Otorongo area. This oxbow lake is one of the highlights of the expedition and provides excellent opportunities to observe aquatic and forest wildlife.
We explore the lake quietly aboard a catamaran, allowing us to move slowly through the water without disturbing the animals. One of the main species we hope to observe is the giant river otter, one of the most emblematic mammals of the Amazonian wetlands.
The lake is also home to an impressive variety of birds, including species such as the purple gallinule and Agami heron, as well as many other tropical waterbirds and forest species.
During the day, we also walk through primary rainforest, accompanied by our guide, who will explain the complex relationships between plants, animals, insects, rivers, and forest ecosystems. These walks provide opportunities to observe different monkey species, tropical birds, insects, medicinal plants, giant trees, and other elements of the Amazon rainforest.
The Manu region is home to an extraordinary diversity of primates, and during the expedition there are opportunities to encounter several different monkey species depending on their movements and feeding activity.
In the afternoon, we return to our lodge for dinner and rest. An optional night walk may also be organized for travelers interested in discovering the nocturnal side of the rainforest, where frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles, and other nighttime wildlife become more active.

Very early in the morning, we begin one of the most anticipated wildlife experiences of the Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days: a visit to the macaw clay lick near the Salvadorcillo area.
At these natural clay banks, macaws, parrots, and parakeets may gather during the early morning to consume mineral-rich clay. When conditions are favorable, the combination of colorful birds, tropical forest, and morning activity creates an extraordinary wildlife spectacle.
After observing the clay lick, we begin navigating back along the Manu River, continuing to watch for wildlife along the riverbanks. The boat journey provides additional opportunities to spot monkeys, caimans, turtles, capybaras, river birds, and other rainforest species.
Along the way, we make a short visit to Cocha Brasco, another oxbow-lake environment where there may be opportunities to observe giant river otters and aquatic wildlife.

On the final day, we begin our return journey by motorized boat along the Upper Madre de Dios River.
Although we are leaving the deeper sections of Manu behind, the journey still offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation. Keep your camera and binoculars ready, as birds, monkeys, river animals, and other species may still appear along the riverbanks.
The return journey often feels bittersweet, as we say goodbye to the immense forests, rivers, and wildlife that have accompanied us throughout the expedition.
Upon reaching Atalaya, we leave the boat and continue by road toward Cusco. During the drive, we once again pass through the extraordinary cloud forest, providing another opportunity to appreciate the vegetation, mountain scenery, and changing ecosystems of the Manu region.
We continue through the Andes toward Cusco, with an estimated arrival between approximately 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, depending on weather, traffic, road conditions, river navigation, and other operational circumstances.
With our arrival in Cusco, the Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days comes to an end after five days of rainforest exploration, wildlife observation, river navigation, and unforgettable experiences in one of Peru’s most extraordinary natural environments.

Travel Insurance

Reservation and Confirmation
A reservation for the Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days is considered confirmed only after the required payment has been received and Machu Picchu Team has verified the essential services for the selected departure date. Deposit and Payment Conditions
