TRIP ITINERARY
Q´eswachaka Bridge 1 day Trip
The day would have to kick off impossibly early, a 4:00 a.m. start from my hotel in Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,399 m). But for this, it’s completely worth it. The drive south into the Canas province is a huge part of the allure, a road trip into the heart of Peru’s dramatic history and stunning topography. I imagine watching the landscape unfold as we pass the enigmatic Urcos Lagoon, where legend whispers that the last Inca commanded his empire’s gold be thrown to keep it from the Spanish.
The route continues through the very districts where the famous indigenous leader Túpac Amaru II lived and led his “Great Rebellion” against the Spanish Crown, which began on November 4, 1780. It’s a chance for getting my history fix in the most authentic way possible. Along the way, I’m especially keen to see the Pabellones Volcano in Yanaoca. It’s a tiny, curious volcano, just about 4 meters in diameter, a unique geological quirk near the pretty Pampamarca lagoon.
And then, the main event: arriving at the Queswachaca bridge itself, hanging at a breathtaking 3,792 meters (12,440.94 feet). I can just picture it, a 33-meter-long, 1.20-meter-wide testament to human ingenuity swaying gently over the majestic Apurimac River. The fact that it’s constructed entirely from ichu grass (Queswas), hand-braided in a joint effort by the local communities of Chaupibamda, Choccayhua, Ccollana, Quehue, and Huinchiri, is what makes it so magical. I’d absolutely cross it, feeling the texture and strength of the sun-dried, hand-pounded, and twisted vegetable fibers underfoot—a truly surreal moment connecting the present to an ancient past.
To cap off the day, the return journey includes a stop at the impressive Ccarañahui or Q’arañahui caves. There’s a pervasive sense of the mystical here; legend says the Incas came to this grotto to spiritually communicate with their gods. The presence of a mysterious lagoon deep inside the cave just adds to the ethereal atmosphere, making it a perfect, unforgettable finish before heading back to Cusco, completely exhilarated from a day of incredible discovery.
The Legendary Annual Renewal
This isn’t a static monument; it’s a living tradition. Because the ichu grass naturally decomposes in the mountain climate, the bridge requires a total reconstruction every single year. This epic renewal is a communal ritual performed by the surrounding communities. It’s a three-day process that takes place around the second Sunday of June, culminating on the fourth day with a vibrant folkloric festival. I dream of one day timing my visit to witness this, to see the authentic, untouched dances and share in a tradition that is truly unique in the world.
