  • End Time: Approximately 8:00 PM back in Cusco.

Highlights

  • A Stop at the Limatambo Valley Lookout: For those first stunning, panoramic views of the valley (average elevation: 2,554 m / 8,379 ft).
  • The Ultimate Sighting: The main event—witnessing the majestic flight of the Andean condors. I can’t wait for this.
  • The Hike to the Condor Viewpoint: A trek to the edge of the Chonta Canyon (approximate elevation: 3,400 m / 11,155 ft) promises to be an adventure in itself.
  • Epic Canyon Views: Soaking in the dramatic, sprawling landscapes of the Chonta Canyon.
  • Spectacular Mountain Vistas: I’m hoping for a clear day to catch a spectacular view of the legendary Mt. Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 ft) and Mt. Humantay (5,473 m / 17,956 ft).
  • An Authentic Andean Village: Exploring the remote and charming village of Chonta.
  • The Intriguing Drive: The journey itself, a mix of paved and dirt roads, is part of the appeal—a real trip off the beaten path.

TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

A Journey to the Realm of the Condor

The journey begins with a 7:00 a.m. pick-up from my hotel in Cusco (elevation: 3,399 m / 11,152 ft), heading out towards the incredible Chonta Condor Canyon. The drive itself is an adventure. After about an hour, the first stop would be near the town of Ancahuasi (elevation: 3,465 m / 11,368 ft) to explore the archaeological site of Killarumiyuq (elevation: 3,650 m / 11,975 ft), which translates to “The Moonstone.” I love the sound of that.

From there, it’s another 30-to-40-minute drive to Tarawasi (elevation: 2,675 m / 8,776 ft), another intriguing Inca site that my guide would bring to life with stories of its past. After getting my history fix, the drive continues for about 45 minutes to the town of Chonta, where we’d pause for a well-deserved lunch.

Refreshed, the main event begins: the hike to the Condor Canyon viewpoint. I’ve heard the trek takes about an hour and a half, with the terrain being mostly flat—a typical highland path with a gentle downhill slope at the end. I’d be on high alert the whole way, hoping to catch a glimpse of the majestic condors soaring overhead even before we arrive. After soaking in the spectacular views of the condors, the Apurimac Canyon, and the winding river below, we’d return along the same route, another scenic 1.5-hour hike. Finally, we’d board the van for the journey back to Cusco, arriving between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., depending on traffic, with a camera full of photos and a mind full of incredible memories.

Inclusions

Included

  • Comfortable Tourist Van: A modern, comfortable vehicle is essential for navigating the varied road conditions and ensuring a smooth ride to the Chonta Canyon.
  • First-Aid Kit: For peace of mind, both the guide and the vehicle come fully equipped with a first-aid kit, including supplies for altitude sickness, digestive issues, and minor cuts or scrapes.
  • Oxygen Tanks: Although Chonta is at a lower altitude than Cusco, good operators take every precaution. Having individual oxygen tanks on hand in both the vehicle and with the guide is a sign of a professional and safety-conscious team.
  • English-Speaking Tour Guide: An experienced, English-speaking guide who specializes in this tour will lead the way, providing fascinating commentary that truly enriches the experience.
  • Box Lunch: A thoughtfully prepared box lunch to be enjoyed in the open air, with the stunning landscapes of Chonta as your dining room.
  • All Entrance Fees: All fees for the Condor Canyon, as well as the archaeological sites of Tarawasi and Killarumiyoc, are covered, ensuring a seamless, hassle-free day.

Not Included

  • Breakfast: The 7:00 a.m. pick-up time allows you to have breakfast at your hotel beforehand. Most hotel breakfast services begin around 6:00 a.m., giving you plenty of time.
  • Tips: Tipping is completely optional. If you are delighted with the service from your guide and driver, a gratuity is a wonderful way to show your appreciation.

Pricing

Group Tour: This is a fantastic option if you enjoy meeting fellow travelers. You’ll join an open group of other hikers. A spot on a group tour typically runs about $100 USD per person.

Private Service: If you’re after a more personal and flexible experience, a private tour is the way to go. The prices are tiered based on how many people are in your group, making it more accessible than you might think.

  • For 2 people: USD $150.00 per person
  • For 3 people: USD $130.00 per person
  • For 4 people: USD $110.00 per person
  • For 5 people: USD $95.00 per person
  • For 6+ people: USD $80.00 per person
