Tour Overview

Pallay Puncho Tour from Cusco: The Mountain That Looks Like a Woven Poncho is a full-day hiking experience to one of the most distinctive colorful mountain landscapes in southern Cusco. Located in the high Andes, Pallay Punchu is known for its striking natural formations, layered ridges, and mineral-rich colors that create a dramatic contrast with the surrounding valleys and mountains.

During the tour, travelers will hike through a remote Andean environment and enjoy panoramic views of the region’s high-altitude scenery. The mountain displays a variety of natural tones, including reddish, ochre, brown, and yellow shades produced by the mineral composition of the terrain.

Pallay Punchu is an excellent option for travelers looking for an alternative colorful mountain experience near Cusco, with scenic hiking, fewer crowds than some better-known routes, and impressive opportunities for photography. The Pallay Punchu Tour is recommended for visitors who enjoy trekking, high-Andean landscapes, nature, and less-frequented destinations while exploring the southern region of Cusco.

Trip itinerary

Your Pallay Punchu + Raqchi Tour from Cusco begins early in the morning with hotel or Airbnb pick-up in Cusco between approximately 4:00 and 4:30 AM. Once the group is assembled, we travel south through the Andean countryside toward Cusipata, passing rural communities, agricultural areas, valleys, and mountain landscapes.

At approximately 6:30 to 7:00 AM, we arrive in Cusipata for a buffet breakfast, giving you time to eat, rest, and prepare for the high-altitude hike ahead. After breakfast, we continue by tourist transportation for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes toward the starting point of the Pallay Punchu trail. As the route climbs into the high Andes, the scenery becomes increasingly remote and dramatic.

Upon arrival at the trailhead, your professional guide will provide a short safety briefing and explain the route before beginning the hike.

Pallay Punchu Hike

The ascent is divided into several sections leading toward the main colorful formations of Pallay Punchu Mountain. The first formation is reached after approximately 20 minutes of hiking. From there, the trail continues for another 30 minutes toward the second formation, followed by approximately 45 additional minutes to reach the third and most distant viewpoint.

Along the route, you will observe the characteristic mineral-rich ridges of Pallay Punchu, with natural shades of red, ochre, yellow, brown, and other tones that create its distinctive layered appearance.

At the main viewpoints, you will have time to rest, take photographs, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and high-Andean landscapes while your guide provides information about the geography and natural environment of the region.

Return Hike

After completing the visit, we begin the descent along the same route. The return from the third formation takes approximately 45 minutes, followed by around 30 minutes from the second formation and approximately 20 minutes from the first formation back to the starting point. Once the group reaches the trailhead, we board the tourist vehicle and continue with the cultural portion of the tour.

Raqchi Archaeological Site

After the Pallay Punchu hike, we travel to the Raqchi Archaeological Park, an important Inca complex located south of Cusco. During the visit, you will have the opportunity to see the impressive Temple of Wiracocha, together with other archaeological structures that formed part of this important Inca settlement.

The visit to Raqchi is optional. Travelers who wish to enter must pay the corresponding entrance fee directly. Passengers who choose not to visit the archaeological site may remain in the tourist vehicle while the group completes the visit. Because the tour follows a fixed full-day schedule, the time at Raqchi is limited in order to maintain the planned return time to Cusco.

Buffet Lunch in Cusipata

After the cultural visit, we continue to a local restaurant in Cusipata, where a buffet lunch is included. This is an opportunity to rest and recover after the hike before beginning the journey back to Cusco.

Return to Cusco

At approximately 3:00 PM, we begin the return journey to Cusco. Arrival in the city is expected at approximately 5:00 PM, depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, and the pace of the group.

What is included

Early Hotel or Airbnb Pick-Up in Cusco

We provide early-morning pick-up from selected hotels and Airbnbs located within the regular service area of Cusco. The exact pick-up time will be confirmed once we receive the name and address of your accommodation. Please be ready at the hotel reception or main entrance at the confirmed time. If your accommodation is located close to the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, you may also choose to meet the group directly at our office at the scheduled departure time.

Round-Trip Tourist Transportation

The tour includes tourist transportation from Cusco to the Pallay Punchu trekking area and return to the city after the excursion. Travel in a tourist vehicle with an experienced driver while enjoying the changing landscapes of southern Cusco, including rural communities, high-Andean valleys, mountains, and traditional agricultural areas along the route.

Entrance Ticket to Pallay Punchu

The required entrance fee to Pallay Punchu is included in the tour price, allowing access to the trekking route and main viewpoints.

Energizing Breakfast Before the Hike

Before beginning the main trekking section, the tour includes a complete breakfast to help you prepare for the physical activity ahead. Breakfast generally includes a selection of hot drinks, bread, fruit, and other local breakfast items, depending on the restaurant and daily service.

Buffet Lunch After the Trek

After completing the Pallay Punchu hike, enjoy a buffet-style lunch before returning to Cusco. The menu generally includes soups, traditional Peruvian dishes, rice, pasta, vegetables, salads, and side dishes. Vegetarian and other dietary options may be arranged when requested in advance. The guide carries a basic first aid kit and emergency oxygen during the tour to provide initial assistance if needed, particularly because the route reaches high-altitude areas.

Professional Bilingual Trekking Guide

The Pallay Punchu Tour from Cusco is accompanied by a professional guide who speaks English and Spanish. Your guide will coordinate the route, provide important safety instructions, assist during the hike, and share information about the high-Andean environment, local communities, geography, and natural characteristics of Pallay Punchu. Because this is a high-altitude trek, the guide will also help the group maintain an appropriate walking pace and provide recommendations throughout the ascent and descent.

Small-Group Tour Experience

The Pallay Punchu Tour is organized in manageable groups to provide better coordination and more personalized assistance during the hike. Traveling with a limited number of participants allows the guide to monitor the group more effectively, organize rest stops, answer questions, and provide additional support to travelers who may need more time because of the altitude.

Trekking Poles Included

Trekking poles are provided as part of the tour and can be especially useful during steep, uneven, or slippery sections of the Pallay Punchu trail. They provide additional balance and can reduce pressure on the knees during both the ascent and descent.

Return and Drop-Off in Cusco

After completing the tour, transportation returns to Cusco. The standard drop-off point can be coordinated near the Machu Picchu Team office in Plaza Regocijo, conveniently located close to the Plaza de Armas. Airport or bus terminal drop-off may also be coordinated in advance when operationally possible. Exact return time will depend on traffic, weather, trail conditions, and the pace of the group.

Free Luggage Storage

Travelers booking the Pallay Punchu Tour from Cusco may leave unnecessary luggage at the Machu Picchu Team office before departure at no additional cost. This allows you to travel with only a small daypack containing the essentials required for the hike.

First Aid Kit and Emergency Oxygen

Your guide carries a first aid kit and portable oxygen during the Pallay Punchu excursion. Because the tour takes place at high altitude, our team monitors participants throughout the hike and can provide initial assistance in case of altitude-related discomfort or minor incidents. Travelers should always inform the guide immediately if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, severe headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, or difficulty breathing.

Hotel Accommodation in Cusco

Hotel accommodation in Cusco before or after the Pallay Punchu Tour from Cusco is not included in the standard tour price. Travelers must arrange their own accommodation according to their travel plans. If you need assistance finding or coordinating a hotel in Cusco, you may contact our reservations team for available options.

Tips and Gratuities

Tips for the professional guide, driver, restaurant staff, or other personnel involved in the tour are not included in the package price. Gratuities are completely optional and may be given at your own discretion according to the quality of service received. Tips for the guide, driver, restaurant staff, or other service personnel are optional and are not included in the tour price.

Additional Services

Any service or expense that is not specifically mentioned in the Included section is not covered by the standard tour price. This may include additional meals or drinks, snacks, souvenirs, personal purchases, optional activities, additional transportation, or other services requested by the traveler during the trip. Any extra service requested before or during the Pallay Punchu Tour will be subject to availability and may involve an additional cost.

HOW TO DRESS FOR THE PALLAY PUNCHU TOUR FROM CUSCO

Wearing the right clothing and carrying the essential items will help you stay warm, comfortable, and prepared throughout the hike.

What to Wear

  • Dress in layers: Temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day, so wear several light layers that you can easily add or remove.
  • Hiking pants: Choose comfortable, flexible, and quick-drying pants suitable for trekking.
  • Hiking shoes or boots: Wear sturdy footwear with good grip. Hiking boots with ankle support are recommended, especially during the rainy season.

  • Hat or beanie: A warm hat is useful during the colder parts of the day.
  • Gloves: Lightweight or warm gloves are recommended, especially for the early morning.
  • Sun hat or cap: Useful for protection from the strong Andean sun.

What to Carry in Your Backpack

We did the 5 days salkantay trek. Our guide Amoroso was the best. He was really patient with us and made this experience unforgettable!! He explained everything really well and made us feel included even if we were always last. The trek was amazing but be prepared for night one to be really really cold. We can only recommend doing this trek with Machu Picchu Team.
