Trip itinerary

Upon arrival at Cusco Airport, located at approximately 3,400 meters / 11,150 feet above sea level, our team will welcome you and provide a private transfer to your hotel.

After check-in, the rest of the day is intentionally kept free so you can rest and adapt gradually to the altitude. We recommend taking it easy, staying hydrated, and avoiding demanding activities during your first hours in Cusco.

If you feel comfortable later in the day, you may take a gentle walk through the historic center or explore the nearby streets at your own pace.

In the evening, you may attend a traditional presentation at the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo, where Andean music, dances, and regional costumes introduce you to the cultural diversity of Cusco.

Overnight in Cusco.

After breakfast at the hotel, begin your day with a guided visit through the Historic Center of Cusco.

The morning walk introduces you to the city’s unique combination of Inca and colonial architecture. Ancient stone walls, traditional streets, plazas, churches, and historic buildings reveal how Cusco developed from the capital of the Inca Empire into one of Peru’s most important cultural cities.

After a break around midday, the afternoon tour continues with a visit to Coricancha, the former Temple of the Sun, where Inca stonework still forms the foundation of the colonial-era Santo Domingo complex.

From there, continue to the archaeological sites located above Cusco.

At Sacsayhuamán, admire enormous stone walls and panoramic views over the city. The route then continues to Qenqo, known for its carved limestone formations and ceremonial spaces.

Next, visit Puka Pukara, a smaller Inca complex strategically positioned along an ancient route, followed by Tambomachay, famous for its finely constructed stone channels and flowing water features.

Before returning to Cusco, there may also be time to see llamas and alpacas and learn more about traditional Andean textiles and fibers.

The tour finishes in the late afternoon, with return to your hotel or a central drop-off point.

Overnight in Cusco.

After breakfast, depart Cusco and travel into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, following a route surrounded by mountains, agricultural terraces, traditional villages, and the Vilcanota–Urubamba River.

The first scenic stop is at the Taray Viewpoint, where you can enjoy a broad panoramic view of the valley before continuing toward Pisac.

At the Pisac Archaeological Site, your guide will explain the importance of its agricultural terraces, ceremonial sectors, residential areas, and strategic position above the valley.

Afterward, visit the town of Pisac, where there will be time to see local artisan work and traditional jewelry inspired by Andean symbols and regional culture.

The journey then continues to Urubamba, where you will enjoy lunch before heading to Ollantaytambo.

This historic town preserves original Inca streets, stone foundations, and water channels that are still in use today. Above the town, the archaeological complex rises across the mountainside with impressive terraces, temples, and monumental stonework.

In the late afternoon, board the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

During the journey, the scenery gradually changes from the open Sacred Valley to the greener and more humid cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, a member of our team will meet you and accompany you to your hotel.

Overnight in Aguas Calientes.

After breakfast, prepare for the highlight of the journey: your visit to Machu Picchu.

The exact departure time from your hotel will depend on the entrance time assigned to your ticket. You will take the shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the archaeological sanctuary.

At Machu Picchu, your private professional guide will lead you through the circuit included with your ticket. The guided visit generally lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours.

During the tour, you will learn about the architecture, urban organization, engineering, ceremonial spaces, and historical importance of Machu Picchu while enjoying the extraordinary mountain setting surrounding the site.

After completing the guided visit, return by bus to Aguas Calientes.

Depending on your train schedule, you will have some free time for lunch or to explore the town before boarding the return train.

The train will take you toward Ollantaytambo, Poroy, Wanchaq, or the corresponding station, depending on your confirmed service. Upon arrival, a transfer will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco.

Optional upgrades may include a panoramic return train, lunch near the entrance of Machu Picchu, or an additional mountain ticket such as Huayna Picchu, subject to availability.

Overnight in Cusco.

After breakfast, leave Cusco and begin one of the most scenic overland journeys in southern Peru: the Route of the Sun to Puno.

Travel aboard a comfortable tourist bus while crossing the highlands and visiting several cultural and archaeological attractions along the way.

The first stop is Andahuaylillas, home to a remarkable colonial church decorated with murals, paintings, carved altars, and ornamental details.

Continue to Raqchi, an important Inca archaeological complex dominated by the remains of the Temple of Wiracocha. Its large structures and distinctive columns make it one of the most unusual Inca sites along the route.

Lunch will be served in Sicuani, where you can enjoy a buffet featuring regional dishes.

The journey then climbs toward La Raya Pass, located at approximately 4,335 meters above sea level, the highest point of the route. Here, the landscape opens into broad high-altitude plains surrounded by mountains.

The final cultural stop is Pucará, an important pre-Inca center known for its archaeological heritage and traditional ceramic figures, including the famous Toritos de Pucará.

In the late afternoon, arrive in Puno, where a private transfer will take you to your hotel.

Overnight in Puno.

After breakfast, transfer to the port and begin your full-day exploration of Lake Titicaca, located at approximately 3,812 meters above sea level.

The first visit is to the Uros Floating Islands, where local families live on artificial islands constructed from layers of totora reeds.

During the visit, you will learn how the islands are built and maintained, how totora is used in daily life, and how the Uros communities preserve traditions adapted to life on the lake.

Afterward, continue by boat toward Taquile Island.

Taquile is known for its strong community traditions, agricultural terraces, scenic walking paths, and highly developed textile culture.

During the visit, you will learn how local textiles communicate social identity and community traditions through colors, patterns, and weaving techniques.

A traditional lunch prepared with local ingredients is included on the island.

After lunch, enjoy some time to appreciate the landscape before returning by boat to Puno.

Upon arrival at the port, transfer back to your hotel.

Overnight in Puno.

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Puno according to your flight schedule.

At the appropriate time, a private transfer will take you from your hotel to Juliaca Airport, located approximately 45 minutes from Puno.

We recommend departing with sufficient time before your scheduled flight to allow for road conditions, airport check-in, and security procedures.

This transfer marks the end of your journey through Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, the Route of the Sun, Puno, and Lake Titicaca.

Notes

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – MACHU PICCHU TICKETS

Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu are limited and subject to availability by travel date, circuit, route, and entrance time. Circuit 2 is one of the most requested options and may sell out well in advance, particularly during high-demand periods. When Circuit 2 is unavailable, Machu Picchu Team will arrange the best available alternative at the time the ticket is purchased. Depending on availability, this may be a route within Circuit 3 or Circuit 1. Because availability changes constantly, we strongly recommend booking your package as early as possible. The final Machu Picchu circuit, route, and entrance time will be confirmed once the official ticket has been secured.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Can my Machu Picchu ticket be refunded, transferred, or changed?

Machu Picchu entrance tickets are issued using the traveler’s personal information and are subject to the regulations established by the Peruvian authorities. Once purchased, these tickets are generally non-refundable and subject to strict modification rules. For this reason, any non-recoverable Machu Picchu ticket cost will be deducted from an applicable refund if the traveler later cancels or changes the trip.

2. Are domestic or international flights included?

No. Domestic and international flights are not included unless specifically stated in your confirmed package. However, Machu Picchu Team can help you review your flight schedules so they coordinate correctly with your tours, transfers, trains, and hotel reservations.

3. Can Machu Picchu Team create a customized Peru itinerary?

Yes. We can customize your trip according to your travel dates, interests, preferred destinations, hotel category, travel style, and available time. You can combine Machu Picchu with destinations such as the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, the Amazon, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, or other experiences in Peru.

4. Are private tours available?

Yes. Private tours and transfers can be arranged for individuals, couples, families, or groups seeking a more personalized experience. Private services provide greater flexibility, personalized guide attention, and better control over the pace of the tour, subject to entrance schedules and operational conditions.

5. How do I book a travel package?

Select your preferred package and travel date, provide the required passenger information, and complete the corresponding payment. For services involving Machu Picchu tickets or trains, please provide your full name exactly as shown on your passport, passport number, nationality, date of birth, email address, and WhatsApp number. Once availability has been verified, our reservations team will send you the booking confirmation and final service details.

6. How far in advance should I book?

We generally recommend booking 2 to 3 months in advance, especially for packages that include Machu Picchu, hotels, trains, and multiple destinations. During high season, holidays, or periods of limited Machu Picchu availability, booking even earlier is recommended.

7. Which train is better for Machu Picchu?

Standard tourist trains such as Expedition or Voyager provide a comfortable journey to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo. Travelers looking for a more scenic experience can request a panoramic train upgrade, such as Vistadome, Vistadome Observatory, or another equivalent service, subject to availability and additional cost.

8. Are train tickets included?

Yes, when specifically listed in your package, the corresponding train tickets to and from Machu Picchu Pueblo are included. Exact train company, schedule, route, and station will be confirmed according to availability and the itinerary purchased.

9. Can I choose my train seat?

Seats are normally assigned automatically by the railway company. Machu Picchu Team cannot guarantee a specific seat number. When passengers are booked together under the same reservation, the railway operator generally attempts to seat them together, but this cannot always be guaranteed.

10. What should I do with my large luggage when visiting Machu Picchu?

We recommend leaving your main suitcase at your hotel in Cusco and traveling to Aguas Calientes with only a small overnight bag or daypack. Train companies and Machu Picchu have luggage restrictions, so carrying only the essentials makes the journey more convenient.

11. What are Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are additional hiking experiences located around the archaeological sanctuary. Both require a specific ticket and scheduled entry time. Availability is limited, so these options should be requested well in advance. Huayna Picchu is known for its steeper ascent, while Machu Picchu Mountain offers a longer climb with wide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

12. What currency is used in Peru?

The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Cash in soles is useful for small purchases, local markets, tips, snacks, entrance fees, and establishments where card payments may not be available.

13. Should I bring US dollars or Peruvian soles?

We recommend carrying Peruvian soles for daily expenses. US dollars can also be exchanged and may be accepted by some tourism businesses, but they should not replace local currency completely. Credit and debit cards are commonly accepted in established hotels, restaurants, and tourism businesses.

14. What documents do I need to enter Peru?

Entry requirements depend on your nationality, passport, immigration status, and country of origin. Travelers are responsible for verifying whether they require a passport, visa, national identification document, or other immigration documentation before traveling. Because immigration requirements can change, we recommend confirming the latest conditions with the appropriate Peruvian consulate or immigration authority before departure.

CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS

1. What happens if a tour is affected by weather or circumstances beyond our control?

Weather, natural events, strikes, road closures, government restrictions, transportation interruptions, or other circumstances beyond the direct control of Machu Picchu Team may require modifications to the itinerary. When this occurs, our operations team will evaluate the available alternatives and make reasonable efforts to reorganize the affected service. Any refund will depend on whether payments already made to government entities, railway companies, hotels, transportation providers, guides, or other suppliers can be recovered.

2. Can I change the starting date of my package?

Yes. Requests to change your travel date can be submitted, but all modifications are subject to availability and supplier conditions. Once Machu Picchu tickets, train tickets, hotels, or other services have been confirmed, some components may be non-refundable or non-changeable. If the requested modification generates additional costs, the traveler will be informed before the change is confirmed.

3. Can I cancel my trip?

Yes. Cancellation requests must be submitted through an official Machu Picchu Team communication channel. The amount eligible for refund will depend on how far in advance the cancellation is requested and which services have already been purchased or confirmed. Government entrance tickets, certain train tickets, hotel reservations, supplier deposits, and other non-recoverable services may be deducted from the refund. The specific cancellation conditions applicable to your reservation will be provided during the booking process and should be reviewed before payment.

Important Cancellation Information

Because packages that include Machu Picchu, trains, hotels, and multiple destinations involve services with limited availability and restrictive supplier policies, we strongly recommend reviewing your travel dates carefully before confirming the reservation. We also recommend purchasing travel insurance that includes trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, delays, and other unexpected travel circumstances.

We did the 5 days salkantay trek. Our guide Amoroso was the best. He was really patient with us and made this experience unforgettable!! He explained everything really well and made us feel included even if we were always last. The trek was amazing but be prepared for night one to be really really cold. We can only recommend doing this trek with Machu Picchu Team.

Just finished 4 days with Yuri & Jose, they were both amazing, super helpful and attentive. Thank you to the kitchen staff as well! Definitely a challenge, but in the end it all worth it!
