TRIP ITINERARY
Cusco Hotel pick-up → Capuliyoc → Chiquisca → Playa Rosalinas → Marampata
Your Choquequirao Trek 3 Days begins with an early hotel pick-up in Cusco between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM. Once the group is ready, we will travel in private tourist transportation toward Cachora and the Capuliyoc viewpoint.
The drive takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. Along the way, we will stop for around 30 to 45 minutes so you can enjoy breakfast before continuing to the trailhead.
Arrival at Capuliyoc
Upon reaching Capuliyoc, we will organize our trekking equipment and enjoy panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, the surrounding mountains, and part of the trail leading toward Choquequirao.
After a short orientation from your guide, we will begin the first hiking section of this demanding three-day adventure.
Descent to Chiquisca
The trek begins with an approximately 2.5-hour descent toward Chiquisca, covering around 7 kilometers.
The trail follows a series of mountain switchbacks and natural viewpoints overlooking the Apurímac Canyon. As we descend, the weather gradually becomes warmer and the landscape changes from high Andean scenery to the dry vegetation of the lower canyon.
Upon arrival in Chiquisca, we will enjoy a freshly prepared lunch and take a short break before continuing.
Playa Rosalinas and the Apurímac River
After lunch, we will continue descending toward Playa Rosalinas, the lowest point of the day, located at approximately 1,475 meters above sea level.
Here, we will cross the bridge over the Apurímac River and prepare for the most physically demanding section of the route: the long ascent toward Marampata.
Ascent to Marampata
From the Apurímac River, we will begin a continuous uphill hike through Santa Rosa and toward the community of Marampata.
This section takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours and covers around 8 kilometers. The trail includes steep switchbacks and significant elevation gain, so maintaining a steady pace, drinking sufficient water, and following your guide’s recommendations will be essential.
As we gain altitude, the views of the canyon and surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive.
Arrival at the Choquequirao Local Family Lodge
Upon reaching Marampata, we will arrive at the Choquequirao local Family Lodge, where you can rest and recover after completing the most demanding section of the day.
A warm dinner will be served in the evening, followed by an overnight stay at the lodge. Its location offers impressive views of the Apurímac Canyon and provides a comfortable base for the following day’s visit to Choquequirao.

The walk from Marampata to Choquequirao takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and follows a scenic mountain trail with panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, surrounding peaks, and cloud forest.
Guided Exploration of Choquequirao
Upon arrival, your professional guide will lead a detailed tour through the most important areas of the archaeological complex.
Choquequirao is often described as the “sister city of Machu Picchu” because of its monumental architecture, ceremonial importance, agricultural terraces, and dramatic mountain location. Its remote setting and limited number of visitors provide a peaceful and immersive experience.
During the guided visit, we will explore important sectors such as:
- The main ceremonial plazas
- The religious and administrative areas
- The ceremonial Usno
- Agricultural terraces
- Residential structures
- Water channels and fountains
- The famous llama terraces
Your guide will explain the history, architecture, symbolism, and possible functions of these different areas while sharing information about Choquequirao’s importance within the Inca world.
Picnic Lunch at Choquequirao
At midday, we will enjoy a picnic lunch in an authorized area near the archaeological complex.
This allows us to rest, recover our energy, and continue exploring the site without returning to Marampata during the middle of the day. You will also have time to take photographs and appreciate the impressive natural surroundings.
Visit to Pajchayoc
After exploring the main archaeological sectors, we will continue toward Pajchayoc, depending on the group’s pace, weather, trail conditions, and available time.
This lower section is known for its agricultural terraces, water-management structures, and the nearby Pajchayoc waterfall. The additional descent and return require extra physical effort, so your guide will evaluate whether the visit can be completed safely.
Return to Marampata
In the afternoon, we will begin the hike back to Marampata. The return route includes both uphill and downhill sections and takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the pace of the group.
Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to rest, shower, and enjoy the peaceful views of the Apurímac Canyon. A warm dinner will be served in the evening, followed by a second overnight stay at the Choquequirao Sanctuary Lodge.

This bag will be transported by pack horses during the trek, allowing you to hike with only a small daypack.
Hotel Pick-Up and Drop-Off in Cusco
Your adventure begins with hotel pick-up in Cusco between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM on Day 1. This early departure allows us to reach Capuliyoc with sufficient time to complete the demanding hike to Marampata. Drop-off will be provided at your hotel or at a convenient central location, depending on traffic and operational arrangements.

The journey takes approximately four hours each way, although the exact travel time may vary depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, and scheduled stops.
Professional Bilingual Trekking Guide
The trek is led by an experienced professional guide who speaks English and Spanish and has extensive knowledge of the Choquequirao route, the Apurímac Canyon, local communities, and the archaeological complex. Your guide will accompany the group throughout the three-day journey, coordinate the daily schedule, provide historical and cultural explanations, monitor the group’s physical condition, and offer assistance during the steep ascents and descents.
Entrance Ticket to Choquequirao
Admission to the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex is included in the tour package. Our reservations and operations team will coordinate the entrance arrangements in advance, so you will not need to purchase the ticket separately during the trek.
Complete Guided Tour of Choquequirao
On Day 2, your guide will lead a detailed exploration of the most important sectors of the Choquequirao Archaeological Complex. The visit includes ceremonial plazas, temples, the ceremonial Usno, agricultural terraces, residential and administrative areas, water channels, fountains, and the famous llama terraces. Depending on the group’s pace, physical condition, available time, weather, and trail conditions, the itinerary may also include a visit to the Pajchayoc sector and its surrounding water features. You will have several hours to explore the site, take photographs, and learn about the history and importance of this remote Inca settlement.
Duffel Bag and Pack-Horse Service
Each traveler receives a duffel bag with a maximum capacity of 7 kilograms for personal belongings. Pack horses transport the duffel bags, food, supplies, and operational equipment between the trailhead and the lodge in Marampata. You will only need to carry a small daypack containing the items required while hiking, such as drinking water, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear, personal medication, snacks, and a camera. Your duffel bag will be available when you arrive at the lodge.
Meals During the Trek
The Choquequirao Trek 3 Days includes 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 2 dinners, as described in the official itinerary. A light early-morning snack is also provided on the final day before the descent from Marampata. Meal service begins with lunch on Day 1 and finishes with lunch on Day 3. On the day of the Choquequirao visit, a picnic lunch is provided so that you can maximize your time inside the archaeological complex. Breakfast during the outbound journey on Day 1 is not included unless specifically stated in your booking confirmation. The group will stop at a suitable location where travelers may purchase breakfast.
Special Dietary Options
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other special dietary options are available upon request at no additional cost. Please inform us about any allergies, food intolerances, or dietary requirements when making your reservation so our team can prepare suitable meals in advance.
Two Nights at Choquequirao Sanctuary Lodge
The tour includes two nights at the Choquequirao Sanctuary Lodge in Marampata. The lodge offers comfortable beds, blankets, basic facilities, and impressive views of the Apurímac Canyon and surrounding mountains. Because the itinerary uses lodge accommodation rather than camping, you will not need to bring a tent or sleeping bag. Bathroom and room arrangements may vary according to the lodge facilities, room category, and availability.
Trekking Support Team
Our local support team coordinates the services required throughout the three-day trek. Depending on the group size, the team may include a professional guide, cooks or meal-preparation staff, muleteers, pack horses, transportation personnel, and lodge staff. Their combined work ensures that meals, accommodation, luggage transportation, equipment, and daily trekking logistics are properly organized throughout the journey.
First-Aid Kit and Emergency Oxygen
Your guide will carry essential safety equipment, including a first-aid kit, emergency oxygen, and basic emergency supplies. The guide will monitor the group’s physical condition, recommend an appropriate walking pace, and provide assistance when required. Travelers should understand that the Choquequirao Trek 3 Days takes place in a remote mountain area where immediate medical assistance may not be available. Comprehensive travel insurance covering trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.
Free Luggage Storage in Cusco
Any luggage that you do not need during the trek can be stored securely at our Cusco office at no additional cost. You may leave your main suitcase or large travel backpack with our team before departure and collect it after returning from Choquequirao.

Not Included
Drinking Water
Drinking water for refilling your reusable bottle is not included. Small shops operated by local families can be found at certain points along the Choquequirao route, where travelers may purchase bottled water, soft drinks, and energy drinks. However, their opening hours, stock, and availability cannot be guaranteed. We recommend beginning each hiking day with at least one to two liters of water. You may also carry a portable water filter or purification tablets, as natural water sources can be found along parts of the trail. Water collected from rivers, streams, or springs must always be properly filtered or purified before consumption. Personal snacks are also not included outside the meals and refreshments specified in the itinerary. Consider carrying energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, or other lightweight snacks for additional energy during the longer hiking sections.
Breakfast on Day 1
Breakfast on the first day is not included. During the drive from Cusco to Capuliyoc, we will stop at a suitable location for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, allowing travelers to purchase breakfast before beginning the trek. We recommend carrying cash in Peruvian soles, as card payments or digital payment methods may not be available at local establishments along the route.
Trekking Poles
Trekking poles are not included but are strongly recommended for this itinerary. The Choquequirao Trek 3 Days includes long and steep descents, demanding uphill sections, stone steps, switchbacks, and uneven or slippery terrain. Travelers who do not have their own equipment may rent a professional pair of trekking poles from Machu Picchu Team for USD 10 for the complete trek. Trekking poles provide greater stability, reduce pressure on the knees, and offer additional support during the most challenging sections.
Personal Horse
The pack-horse service included in the tour is used to transport duffel bags, food, and operational equipment. It does not include a personal riding horse for travelers. A horse may sometimes be hired from local muleteers for certain uphill sections when a traveler requires additional assistance. This service is subject to availability, trail conditions, and an additional payment made directly to the local provider. For safety reasons, horses cannot be used on steep downhill sections or on parts of the route considered unsuitable by the guide or muleteer.
Personal Expenses
Personal purchases are not included in the tour price. These may include bottled water, energy drinks, additional snacks, alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, hot showers when charged separately by the lodge, and other optional services available along the route. Bring sufficient cash in Peruvian soles, preferably in small-denomination notes, because there are no ATMs along the trekking route and most local businesses do not accept cards or digital payments.
Gratuities
Tips for the guide, cooks, muleteers, drivers, and other members of the trekking support team are not included. Gratuities are entirely optional and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided. Any contribution is greatly appreciated as recognition of the team’s effort, professionalism, and assistance throughout this physically demanding journey.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is not included but is strongly recommended for every participant. Your policy should provide coverage for high-altitude trekking, medical treatment, emergency evacuation, accidents, trip cancellation or interruption, travel delays, and lost or damaged belongings. Choquequirao is located in a remote mountain region where immediate medical attention and vehicle access are limited. Before traveling, review your policy carefully and confirm that trekking at the elevations and difficulty level included in this itinerary is covered.
