We believe in full transparency. Please read our deposit, payment and cancellation policy before booking your Salkantay Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu, so you can book with complete confidence.

1. Booking Deposit: $180 USD per Person

A deposit of $180 USD per person confirms your booking. We use it right away to secure your spot and buy your Machu Picchu ticket (and train tickets, if applicable). The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, no matter how far in advance you cancel.

2. Payment of the Remaining Balance

If you only paid the deposit, the balance must be paid at least 48 hours before the tour starts. Otherwise, your booking may be cancelled without refund. You can pay:

  • At our Cusco office, by card or cash (soles or US dollars)
  • Online, through our booking platform

If the balance is not paid on time, our booking platform may charge it to the card or account used for the deposit.

3. Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain Tickets

Machu Picchu tickets are issued by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and cannot be refunded, transferred or changed (no date or name changes). This is a government rule, not a Machu Picchu Team policy. The same applies to Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain tickets.

We buy all tickets as soon as your booking is confirmed and email them to you, so once purchased they cannot be refunded. If an optional mountain ticket is not available, we refund its full price. You can add only one mountain per day.

4. Salkantay Trek Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be sent in writing to our official email. The following penalties apply:

  • More than 48 hours before departure: you lose the $180 USD deposit per person
  • Less than 48 hours before departure: you lose 100% of the amount paid

If you paid in full, we refund the balance after deducting the deposit, any tickets already purchased (Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), non-refundable extras such as the Vistadome upgrade, and bank fees. If you only paid the deposit, there is no refund.

Tickets already issued in your name can still be used by you on their original date if you decide to visit Machu Picchu on your own.

5. Train Tickets to and from Machu Picchu

Train tickets follow the policies of PeruRail or Inca Rail. They are non-refundable, and date changes depend on availability and may have an extra cost.

6. Traveler Responsibilities

Please give us your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport. Errors may cause denied entry to Machu Picchu, extra costs or loss of services, without refund.

Send your passport copy and, for students, a valid student ID right after booking. Late documents may mean tickets are no longer available, without refund.

7. Itinerary Changes and Force Majeure

Machu Picchu Team may change, suspend or cancel parts of the itinerary for reasons beyond our control, such as severe weather, strikes, road closures, government restrictions or train disruptions. In these cases a refund or compensation is not guaranteed, but we will always do our best to offer a suitable alternative.

8. Risks of High-Altitude Trekking on the Salkantay Route

By booking, you accept that high-altitude trekking involves risks such as altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, physical exhaustion and limited access to medical care. Machu Picchu Team is not liable except in cases of proven negligence or willful misconduct.

9. Travel Insurance for the Salkantay Trek

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, cancellation, lost luggage and repatriation. It is best to buy it in your home country before traveling.

10. Traveler Conduct

We expect respectful behavior toward other travelers, our staff, and the natural and cultural heritage of the route. We may remove any participant whose behavior puts the group, staff or environment at risk, without refund.

11. Claims and Complaints

Any complaint must be made during the tour or within 3 calendar days after it ends. After that, the service is considered accepted.

12. Applicable Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Peru. Any dispute will first be resolved through conciliation in Cusco. If no agreement is reached, it will go to the competent courts of Cusco, Peru.

Personalize your Salkantay Trek 3 Days with these optional extras. Our team coordinates each one with your itinerary. Mountain tickets and the Vistadome upgrade should be requested when you book, as availability is limited.

Huayna Picchu Mountain Ticket · $65 USD
  • Huayna Picchu is the iconic peak behind the citadel, seen in the classic photos of Machu Picchu. It needs a separate ticket, not included in the regular Machu Picchu entrance.
  • We book the time slot that best fits your itinerary, usually a morning time slot. The round-trip hike takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • The trail has steep stone steps, narrow and exposed sections. Not recommended if you are afraid of heights.
  • Guide not included: you hike on your own on a clearly marked trail.
  • Spots are very limited: book it with your tour. If no ticket is available for your date, we refund the full $65 USD.
Machu Picchu Mountain Ticket · $65 USD
  • One of the highest viewpoints in the area, at 3,082 m (10,111 ft), on the opposite side of Huayna Picchu, with panoramic views of the citadel and the Urubamba Valley. Requires a separate ticket.
  • We book a morning time slot whenever possible. The round-trip hike takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Less steep and exposed than Huayna Picchu, but a long, continuous climb on original Inca steps.
  • Guide not included: you hike on your own on the marked trail.
  • Book it with your tour. If no ticket is available for your date, we refund the full $65 USD.
Vistadome Train Upgrade · $45 USD
  • Only for travelers with the Return by Train option. Your package already includes a standard train (Expedition or Voyager).
  • The Vistadome has larger panoramic windows, including on the roof, for wider views of the mountains and valleys.
  • Depending on the operator, it may include music, cultural shows and a light snack or drink.
  • Seats are limited, especially in high season: request it when you book. Not available with the Return by Bus option.
Trekking Poles Rental · $10 USD
  • Professional, adjustable trekking poles (one pair) for the whole trek.
  • They give extra balance on steep, rocky or slippery trails and reduce strain on your knees on the descents. Recommended if you have little trekking experience.
  • Add them online when you book, or rent them at our Cusco office during the 7:00 PM briefing the day before the trek.
  • Trekking poles are generally not allowed inside Machu Picchu.
Sleeping Bag Rental · $10 USD
  • Sleeping bag rated to -10°C (14°F), ideal for the cold nights at the high campsites. Price for the whole trek.
  • Cleaned and checked after every trek. A sleeping bag liner is included for extra hygiene and comfort.
  • Add it online when you book, or rent it at our Cusco office during the 7:00 PM briefing the day before the trek.
Zipline Adventure in Lucmabamba (Day 2) · $25 USD
  • A circuit of 5 zipline cables over the valley, plus a 300-meter Tibetan-style suspension bridge, with amazing views of the mountains and the river.
  • Run by trained staff, with safety instructions and all the equipment included.
  • Special price with Machu Picchu Team: $25 USD (booking on site costs $35 USD).
  • 100% refundable if you change your mind before starting the activity, even at the zipline base.
  • Optional: on Day 2 you can choose the zipline instead of the hike to Llactapata. If you prefer not to join, you continue with the regular itinerary.

Why choose Machupicchu Team

The Machu Picchu Team Difference

Why Choose Machu Picchu Team for the Salkantay Trek 3 Days?

With Machu Picchu Team, the Salkantay Trek 3 Days to Machu Picchu is more comfortable and better organized: better campsites, better views and a service designed so you enjoy every day of the journey.

01

Llactapata Inca Trail Included in 3 Days

We are the only company that includes the hike to Llactapata in the 3-day program. On Day 2 you walk an original Inca path to see Machu Picchu from a unique, less common angle, usually only possible on the 5-day trek.

02

A Night in Our Sky Star Domes

Rest after the big Day 1 in our 360° crystal domes in Lucmabamba, with interior lighting and views of the cloud forest.

03

Exclusive Private Campsites

Our campsite in Lucmabamba is private, quiet and away from the crowded areas used by other groups, with much better views.

04

Small Groups of Fit Hikers

Groups of 4 to 6 experienced hikers, with a maximum of 10, so the group keeps a good pace on this intense route.

05

Duffle Bag Carried for the Whole Trek

Our horses carry your waterproof duffle bag (up to 7 kg) every day, from start to finish. No extra cost and no sections where you carry it yourself.

06

Return by Bus or Train

Choose how to return to Cusco after Machu Picchu: by bus, or by train for about $70–90 USD more. One of the few companies that offers both.

07

5-Inch Mattresses and Pillows

All our crystal domes have thick 5-inch mattresses and pillows, so you rest better and recover your energy every night.

08

Buffet Meals, Breakfast Included on Day 1

3 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 2 dinners, served buffet style. Vegetarian and vegan options available. Unlike many agencies, Day 1 breakfast is included.

09

Safety First

Every guide carries a first aid kit and oxygen. Our team is trained to respond quickly to any altitude-related problem.

10

Local Guides: English, Spanish and Quechua

Our local guides are experienced, certified in high-altitude first aid and speak fluent English, Spanish and Quechua, the language of the Incas.

11

Free Salkantay Survivor T-Shirt

Finish the 50 km trek and take home your exclusive Salkantay Survivor T-shirt as a souvenir of your adventure.

More than a tour. The Llactapata Inca Trail, a private campsite, better views, better rest, good food, safety on the trail and flexible return options: that is how we make your Salkantay Trek 3 Days truly special.

We did the 5 days salkantay trek. Our guide Amoroso was the best. He was really patient with us and made this experience unforgettable!! He explained everything really well and made us feel included even if we were always last. The trek was amazing but be prepared for night one to be really really cold. We can only recommend doing this trek with Machu Picchu Team.
