Trip itinerary

Your Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days begins early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco between 5:30 AM and 6:00 AM. Once the group is ready, we will leave the city in comfortable private transportation and begin our journey toward the Manu rainforest.

Visit to the Ninamarca Chullpas

Our first stop will be at the Ninamarca Chullpas, ancient pre-Inca funerary towers located at approximately 3,750 meters above sea level.

Your guide will explain the historical and cultural importance of these archaeological structures, which were used as burial sites by ancient Andean civilizations. From this area, you can also enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Stop in Paucartambo

We will continue to the traditional town of Paucartambo, known for its colonial architecture, narrow streets, colorful houses, and historic stone bridge.

Paucartambo is also famous for its vibrant cultural traditions and religious festivals. We will take a short walk through the town while your guide shares information about its history and importance as a gateway between the Andes and the Amazon rainforest.

Abra Acjanaco Entrance to Manu National Park

After leaving Paucartambo, we will ascend to Abra Acjanaco, located at approximately 4,000 meters above sea level.

This mountain pass marks the official entrance to Manu National Park and offers panoramic views of the Andes and the beginning of the tropical cloud forest. From this point, we will begin a gradual descent through one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Peru.

Wildlife Observation in the Cloud Forest

As we descend into the cloud forest, the landscape changes dramatically. The high Andean scenery is replaced by dense vegetation, waterfalls, moss-covered trees, orchids, heliconias, bromeliads, and giant ferns.

We will make several stops and take short walks along the way to search for wildlife. One of the main highlights is the opportunity to observe the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, at a traditional display area where males gather to perform their courtship dance.

Depending on weather conditions and wildlife activity, we may also see quetzals, trogons, tanagers, hummingbirds, monkeys, and other tropical species. With considerable luck, it may also be possible to observe the elusive spectacled bear.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as all animals live freely in their natural habitat.

Arrival in Pilcopata

In the late afternoon, we will arrive in Pilcopata, located at approximately 550 meters above sea level.

We will stay overnight in a simple jungle lodge situated outside the town and surrounded by tropical vegetation. The lodge provides private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers, offering a comfortable place to rest after the first day of exploration.

After settling into your room, you will enjoy dinner and receive information from your guide about the following day’s activities.

Night 1: Pilcopata: Spend the first night in a comfortable jungle lodge surrounded by the sounds and vegetation of the Manu rainforest.

After breakfast at the lodge in Pilcopata, we will continue our journey by private transportation for approximately 45 minutes to Puerto Atalaya, located at around 490 meters above sea level.

Puerto Atalaya is an important access point to the lower Manu region and the Alto Madre de Dios River. Upon arrival, we will board a motorized boat and begin a scenic journey along the river toward Paititi Lodge.

Boat Journey to Paititi Lodge

The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on river conditions.

As we travel along the Alto Madre de Dios River, you will enjoy beautiful views of the tropical forest, riverbanks, and surrounding mountains. During the journey, keep an eye out for colorful birds, monkeys, butterflies, and other wildlife that may appear along the river.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, as all animals live freely in their natural environment.

Arrival at Paititi Jungle Lodge

Upon arrival at Paititi Lodge, you will have time to settle into your room and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest.

The lodge is surrounded by tropical vegetation and offers simple but comfortable accommodation with private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers.

After settling in, you will enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients.

Excursion to Machuwasi Lake

In the afternoon, we will travel to Machuwasi Lake, one of the most important wildlife-observation areas in the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days.

The lake is surrounded by dense rainforest and wetland vegetation, creating an ideal habitat for a wide variety of birds, reptiles, mammals, and aquatic species.

We will explore the lake aboard a traditional handmade catamaran. This quiet form of transportation allows us to move slowly across the water and observe wildlife without disturbing the natural environment.

During the excursion, we may see: Hoatzins, locally known as Shanshos, Capybaras, Monkeys, Dwarf caimans, Reptiles, Aquatic birds, Insects and butterflies. Your guide will explain the behavior, habitat, and importance of the different species found around the lake.

Optional Night Walk

After dinner, you may join an optional guided night walk near the lodge.

The Amazon rainforest becomes a completely different environment after dark. During the walk, your guide will help you search for nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, insects, spiders, snakes, and other animals that are rarely seen during the day.

You will also experience the unique sounds of the jungle at night, surrounded by the calls of insects, birds, and other rainforest creatures.

NIGHT 2: PAITITI JUNGLE LODGE: Spend the second night at Paititi Jungle Lodge, surrounded by the sounds, vegetation, and wildlife of the Manu rainforest. The lodge provides private rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers for a comfortable stay in the jungle.

Very early in the morning, before sunrise, we will leave Paititi Jungle Lodge and board our motorized boat for a wildlife-observation excursion to a nearby parrot clay lick.

Sunrise Visit to the Parrot Clay Lick

The clay lick is a natural wall of mineral-rich soil where different species of parrots gather during the early morning to consume clay. This behavior is believed to help the birds obtain essential minerals and neutralize certain toxins found in their natural diet.

From a safe observation point, we may see three or four species of parrots arriving in groups, creating a colorful and lively spectacle above the riverbank. The sound of the birds, combined with the early morning atmosphere of the rainforest, makes this one of the most memorable wildlife experiences of the Manu Cultural Zone.

Wildlife activity depends on the weather, season, and natural behavior of the birds, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Return to the Lodge and Breakfast

After observing the clay lick, we will return to Paititi Jungle Lodge by motorized boat.

Upon arrival, you will enjoy breakfast and have a short time to prepare for the next activity of the day.

Guided Walk Through the Primary Rainforest

After breakfast, we will begin a guided walk through the primary Amazon rainforest.

Primary forest is an ancient ecosystem with tall trees, dense vegetation, vines, palms, medicinal plants, and a remarkable diversity of wildlife. As we walk deeper into the jungle, your guide will explain the ecological importance of the forest and point out animal tracks, insects, plants, and signs of wildlife activity.

Depending on luck and natural conditions, we may encounter monkeys, tropical birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and other rainforest species.

Visit to Cocha Maravilla

The walk continues until we reach Cocha Maravilla, a peaceful private lagoon surrounded by tropical vegetation.

From an observation platform near the lake, you will have time to quietly search for wildlife and enjoy the natural scenery. Species commonly observed in this type of habitat may include: Monkeys, Tropical and aquatic birds, Dwarf caimans, Small reptiles, Frogs, Butterflies and insects, Other animals that inhabit the forest and lagoon.

Return to Paititi Jungle Lodge

After exploring the lagoon and surrounding forest, we will walk back to the lodge.

Upon arrival, you will enjoy a traditional Amazonian lunch and have time to rest, relax in your room, or explore the area around the lodge with your guide.

Optional Night Walk

After dinner, you may participate in another optional guided night walk. At night, the jungle becomes active with frogs, insects, spiders, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Rubber Boots for Jungle Walks

Rubber boots are provided for activities through wet, muddy, or humid rainforest trails. The boots help protect your feet and provide better grip during jungle walks. We recommend bringing comfortable socks to wear inside them.

Solar-Powered Charging at the Lodge

Solar-powered charging may be available at the jungle lodge for small electronic devices such as phones, cameras, headlamps, and portable batteries. Electricity in the rainforest is limited, so charging availability depends on sunlight and energy capacity. We recommend bringing fully charged devices and an additional power bank.

Local Boat Operator and Support Team

The tour is supported by local staff with experience navigating the rivers and trails of the Manu region. Their knowledge of the area contributes to safer transportation, better coordination, and a more authentic rainforest experience.

Transportation of Luggage and Equipment

Your main luggage and the necessary tour equipment will be transported by vehicle and boat between the accommodations. You will only need to carry a small daypack with personal essentials during walks and daily excursions.

Free Luggage Storage in Cusco

Travelers joining the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days may leave any unnecessary luggage at the Machu Picchu Team office free of charge. Our office is located at Portal Nuevo 270, Plaza Regocijo, approximately one block from Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. You may leave your luggage on the day before departure or early in the morning before the tour begins. Please bring only the clothing and personal items required for the four-day journey.

Return and Drop-Off at the Machu Picchu Team Office

On the final day, the tour of Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days finishes at the Machu Picchu Team office in Cusco, where you may immediately collect any luggage left in storage. Arrival is expected at approximately 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM, depending on traffic, weather, river conditions, and the state of the road. Our luggage-storage area is open daily, allowing you to leave and collect your belongings safely within the established office hours.

Breakfast on the First Day

Breakfast on the first day is not included in the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days because the tour departs from Cusco very early in the morning. We recommend eating a light breakfast before hotel pick-up or bringing a small snack for the journey. Avoid heavy meals, as the first part of the route includes winding mountain roads between Cusco, Paucartambo, and the cloud forest.

Alcoholic Beverages and Soft Drinks

Alcoholic beverages, sodas, energy drinks, and bottled soft drinks are not included in the tour price. Purified drinking water is provided throughout the journey. You may purchase additional beverages in Pilcopata or bring your own, provided they can be transported safely and do not affect the activities or comfort of the group. We strongly recommend limiting alcohol consumption during the tour, especially before river journeys, jungle walks, and wildlife-observation activities.

Personal Expenses

Personal purchases such as souvenirs, additional snacks, toiletries, medicines, phone services, or other individual expenses are not included. We recommend carrying a small amount of cash in Peruvian soles, as card payments and ATMs may not be available in remote areas of the Manu region.

Travel Insurance

Travel and medical insurance are not included. We strongly recommend obtaining insurance that covers medical assistance, trip cancellation, delayed transportation, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation.

Tips for the Tour Staff

Tips for the guide, cook, driver, boat operator, and lodge staff are not included and are entirely optional. Gratuities are appreciated when you are satisfied with the service, but there is no fixed or compulsory amount.

Clothing

Insect repellent: We recommend a repellent containing approximately 20% to 40% DEET or another effective mosquito-repellent ingredient.
High-SPF sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and reapply it regularly.
Hat or cap: Essential for protection during boat journeys and daytime walks.
UV-protective sunglasses: Useful during river travel and open sections of the route.

Your Manu Adventure

Day 1: hotel pickup between 5:30 and 6:00 am, Ninamarca, Paucartambo and the cloud forest, home of the Cock-of-the-Rock

From the Andes to the Amazon: cross the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m) and descend through the cloud forest into the rainforest, looking for monkeys, capybaras, caimans, hoatzins and macaws. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Health tip: the yellow fever vaccine is not required for a short trip like this one; it is only recommended for stays of 10 days or more in the jungle. Bring insect repellent, a rain jacket and light long-sleeved clothes.

Not included: breakfast on Day 1, alcoholic and soft drinks, tips and travel insurance. A mandatory briefing takes place at our office at 6:00 pm the day before.

Easy to moderate: long drives on Days 1 and 4, and a 3 to 4-hour jungle walk on Day 3 on muddy, humid trails. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free meals are available on request.

CHANGES, CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS

Date Changes and Rescheduling: Requests to change the departure date must be submitted as early as possible by email or WhatsApp.

Customer Cancellation Policy: A non-refundable deposit of USD 180 per person is required to confirm the reservation.

Cancellation more than 48 hours before departure: The deposit and any non-refundable services already confirmed will be deducted. Any eligible remaining balance may be refunded.
Cancellation within 48 hours of departure: No refund will be provided.
No-show or failure to attend the confirmed hotel pick-up: No refund, credit, or rescheduling will be provided.

Card-processing fees, bank charges, currency-conversion costs, and payments already made to lodges, guides, transportation providers, boat operators, or entrance administrators are non-refundable.

Cancellation or Changes by Machu Picchu Team

The itinerary may be changed, postponed, or cancelled due to severe weather, flooding, unsafe river conditions, landslides, road closures, strikes, government restrictions, or other circumstances beyond our control. When possible, Machu Picchu Team will offer:

A modified itinerary
A comparable alternative activity
A refund for services that were not provided and remain recoverable from local suppliers

Where Is Manu National Park Located?

Manu National Park is located in southeastern Peru, between the Andes and the Amazon rainforest. It extends across the provinces of Paucartambo and Manu, within the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios. The park protects an enormous variety of ecosystems, ranging from high Andean grasslands and cloud forests to tropical lowland rainforest.

How Do I Get to the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days?

The tour begins in Cusco with private tourist transportation. The route passes through Paucartambo, Abra Acjanaco, the cloud forest, Pilcopata, and Puerto Atalaya. From Puerto Atalaya, the journey continues by motorized boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River to the jungle lodge and the different activity areas included in the itinerary. The official access route from Cusco to Atalaya takes approximately eight to nine hours by road, depending on traffic, weather, and road conditions. All transportation described in the itinerary is organized by Machu Picchu Team, so travelers do not need to arrange separate vehicles or boats.

Do I Need a Vaccination for the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days?

A yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended for travelers visiting Amazonian areas where there is a risk of transmission. SERNANP specifically advises visitors to Manu to be vaccinated against yellow fever, and health authorities recommend the vaccine for most travelers aged nine months or older visiting risk areas in eastern Peru. The vaccine should ideally be administered at least 10 days before entering the jungle so that the body has sufficient time to develop protection. One dose generally provides lifelong protection. Travelers who are pregnant, severely immunocompromised, allergic to eggs, younger than nine months, or over 60 years old should consult a qualified doctor or travel-medicine clinic before vaccination. Vaccination requirements and personal medical recommendations may change, so each traveler should consult a healthcare professional before traveling.

Can I Change From the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days to the 3-Day Tour During the Trip?

Normally, it is not possible to change from the four-day tour to the three-day tour once the journey has begun. Accommodation, meals, guides, boat transportation, ground transportation, entrance fees, and return logistics are reserved in advance according to the original four-day itinerary. Leaving one day earlier would require separate transportation and new operational arrangements, which may not be available in the remote Manu region. When an early return is required because of an emergency, illness, or personal decision, our team will assist whenever possible. However, the traveler must cover any additional transportation, accommodation, or logistical expenses, and unused services are non-refundable. Any planned change should therefore be requested before departure and is subject to availability and confirmation from our operations team.

Is It Guaranteed That I Will See Animals During the Amazon Tour Manu Cultural Zone 4 Days?

No. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed because the animals live freely in their natural environment. The tour offers good opportunities to observe parrots, monkeys, Hoatzins, capybaras, caimans, tropical birds, reptiles, butterflies, insects, and other Amazonian species. However, sightings depend on the weather, season, time of day, river conditions, noise levels, food availability, and the natural behavior of each animal. Your guide will use their knowledge of the forest and wildlife-observation areas to increase the chances of sightings, but the absence of a particular species does not mean that the tour was not provided correctly. Manu is a protected natural environment, not a zoo, and every wildlife encounter is unique.

Nous avons passé 5 jours avec Omar pour le Salkantay trek et c’était super ! La qualité des logements, des repas et l’accompagnement lors du trek était parfait ! Petit point négatif sur le dernier hôtel et dernier restaurant à Aguas Calientes très mal notés et certains ont eu des puces de lit, à changer car pas du tout hygiénique.En tout cas merci beaucoup à Omar pour cette aventure, sa gentillesse et sa bonne humeur !

He explained everything really well and made us feel included even if we were always last. The trek was amazing but be prepared for night one to be really really cold. We can only recommend doing this trek with Machu Picchu Team.

Une superbe expérience ! L’équipe est au top, une superbe ambiance un tracé magnifique avec des paysages très variés. Tout est bien rôdé, transport, repas, couchage. On mange très bien et en quantité ! Par contre prévoyez de quoi manger pendant la randonnée ce n’est pas inclus. Pour moi c’est la meilleure façon pour se rendre au Machu Picchu en passant par le col du Salkantay et en montant le dernier jour par les marches du chemin de l’Inca. Un petit bémol sur la transparence du prix annoncé , ce trip se veut all inclusive, en réalité ce n’est pas le cas. Certains frais imprévus viennent s’ajouter tout au long des 5 jours ( frais supplémentaires pour les activités, taxe pour certains passages de pont ou col, Tips un peu forcé ). Ce ne sont pas des gros frais mais au cumulé ça représente aux alentours de 300 soles. Je trouve personnellement que l’organisme ferai mieux d’intégrer ces frais dans le prix de leur expérience car on a vraiment la sensation d’être mis sur le fait accompli. Prévoyez des gourdes filtrantes car les bouteilles d’eau sur place sont vendus à prix d’or !
