Your Q’eswachaka Bridge Tour begins early in the morning at approximately 4:00 AM, with pickup from your hotel in Cusco.

We will travel south from Cusco toward the province of Canas, passing through spectacular high-Andean landscapes, traditional communities, agricultural valleys, mountains, and lagoons.

The early departure allows us to make the most of the day and visit the main attractions along this fascinating route.

URCOS LAGOON – HISTORY & INCA LEGENDS

During our journey south, we will pass through the area of Urcos Lagoon, a place surrounded by fascinating local legends and stories connected to the final years of the Inca Empire.

According to local tradition, valuable Inca objects may have been hidden or thrown into the lagoon to prevent them from falling into Spanish hands during the conquest.

Your guide will explain the legends and historical importance associated with this area while you continue deeper into the southern Andes.

YANAOCA & THE LAND OF TÚPAC AMARU II

Our route continues through the province of Canas, a region closely connected to the history of Túpac Amaru II, one of the most important indigenous leaders of the colonial period.

In 1780, Túpac Amaru II led a major rebellion against Spanish colonial rule that became one of the most significant uprisings in the history of colonial Peru.

Traveling through this region provides an opportunity to understand another important chapter of Peruvian history while experiencing the landscapes and communities where these historical events took place.

PAMPAMARCA LAGOON & PABELLONES VOLCANO

Continuing through the highlands, we will visit the area surrounding Pampamarca Lagoon, where you can appreciate beautiful Andean scenery and the peaceful environment of the Canas province.

Nearby, we will observe the curious Pabellones Volcano, a small geological formation that adds another interesting natural attraction to the journey.

Your guide will provide information about the geography and natural characteristics of this remote Andean region.

Q’ESWACHAKA BRIDGE – THE LAST TRADITIONAL INCA ROPE BRIDGE

The highlight of our journey is the legendary Q’eswachaka Bridge, located at approximately 3,792 meters (12,441 feet) above sea level and suspended dramatically over the Apurímac River.

The bridge is approximately 33 meters (108 feet) long and 1.20 meters (4 feet) wide and is traditionally constructed using handwoven plant fibers made from local Andean grasses.

What makes Q’eswachaka truly extraordinary is that the bridge is not simply an ancient monument—it is a living cultural tradition.

Local communities continue to preserve ancestral knowledge by rebuilding the bridge using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

During your visit, your guide will explain the construction process, the materials used, the cultural importance of the bridge, and its connection to the ancient Andean road and communication systems.

THE ANNUAL RENEWAL OF Q’ESWACHAKA

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Q’eswachaka Bridge is its annual reconstruction.

Because the natural fibers gradually deteriorate due to weather and environmental conditions, local communities traditionally come together each year to completely renew the bridge. The process generally takes place in June and involves several days of communal work using traditional knowledge, techniques, and natural materials.

The renewal concludes with cultural celebrations, music, dancing, and community activities, making it one of the most remarkable examples of living Andean heritage.

Q’ARAÑAHUI CAVES

After visiting Q’eswachaka, we begin our return journey toward Cusco, stopping at the fascinating Q’arañahui Caves. Inside the caves, you can observe interesting natural rock formations created over thousands of years.

The site is also surrounded by local legends and traditions. According to oral history, the caves were considered a spiritually significant place connected with ancient Andean beliefs. Your guide will explain the geological characteristics of the caves as well as the stories and traditions associated with the area.

RETURN JOURNEY TO CUSCO

After exploring the caves, we continue our journey back to Cusco through the beautiful landscapes of the southern Andes. This is a chance to relax and reflect on a day filled with history, culture, natural landscapes, and one of Peru’s most extraordinary surviving Andean traditions.

ARRIVAL IN CUSCO – END OF THE TOUR
