Choquequirao Trek the "Cradle of Gold": a massive Inca citadel larger than its famous sibling, hidden deep in the Andes. No permits needed, no crowds — just pure adventure and solitude. Your off-the-beaten-path Inca dream starts here in 2026!
Hand-picked experiences that combine breathtaking landscapes, authentic culture, and unforgettable adventure.

The CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK offers an unparalleled combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure.
The Choquequirao Trek is a challenging 4-day adventure to one of the largest Inca archaeological sites in Peru. Starting from Cachora, the route descends into the Apurímac Canyon, crosses suspension bridges, and climbs to the remote ruins at 3,050 meters. With only a small number of visitors daily, it offers an authentic and uncrowded exploration of Inca history and Andean landscapes.
Choquequirao, known as the Cradle of Gold, features extensive terraces, ceremonial platforms, water channels, and residential sectors spread across a vast area. Only about 40 percent has been excavated, revealing enigmatic white llama figures etched into the hillsides and panoramic views over the canyon. It provides a rare sense of discovery compared to more accessible sites.
The trek covers approximately 60 kilometers round trip with significant elevation changes: steep descents of over 1,500 meters on the first day and demanding ascents on the return. It requires good physical condition, proper gear, and preparation for variable weather. Camping under the stars and crossing remote Andean terrain make it one of Peru's most rewarding multi-day hikes.
While Machu Picchu attracts millions, Choquequirao remains largely untouched and free of crowds or strict permit systems. It delivers the same Inca engineering and cultural depth in a setting of solitude and natural beauty. For travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience with genuine adventure, Choquequirao stands out as Peru's hidden masterpiece.

EXCELLENT Based on 1240 reviews Posted on Google Pientje PluisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We joined the tour last minute and are so glad we did! Ronny was a fantastic tour guide who went out of his way to organise so much for us. Because we booked last minute we didn’t have Machu Picchu tickets included, but Ronny was very helpful in organising a way for us to get them in the end. I would recommend the tour to everyone, I made some really good memories!Posted on Google Colby McClaughertyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ronny was my tour guide, he was very helpful, funny and helped me learn spanish across the tour. One of the best 4 days of my life !Posted on Google Helene MüllerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We did the Salkantay trek with Rony and couldn’t be happier! When I had foot trouble, he organized a horse so I could keep going on the second hiking day. On day three, he arranged a private car and lunch for us so we could skip ahead to Aguas Calientes to still get tickets for Machu Picchu, plus sorted our train back. He was incredibly caring and attentive the whole way, and shared great insights on Inca history too. Highly recommend Rony to anyone doing this trek!Posted on Google Mikel EtxaizTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ronni nos hizo disfrutar del Salkantay trek gracias a sus explicaciones y su buen rollo. Tambien se tomo la molestia de traducir lo que decia ya que en el grupo la mayoria hablaba otro idioma. Muy recomendable hacer este tipo de rutas con el!Posted on Google Sonya KanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Roni was fantastic! Roni is the best guide! Lots of history and logistics were clear. This was an unforgettable experiencePosted on Google SaschaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a great time doing the Salkantay trek with Machu Picchu Team! Alexis (Nachito!) took the best care of us. During the first night I got food poisoning from food from the night before in Cusco, and he really helped me through in a responsible way with his encouraging words and good care. Alexis is truly passionate about what he does! He told us lots about the nature, different plants and the Inca culture! The group of 10 was wonderful and the vibes were great! Nacho blended in perfectly with lots of humor. The food on the way was wonderful and plenty thanks to our cook Braulito. Everything was very well organised and taken care of during the trip. Would recommend!Posted on Google Lola GUETTATrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Le rapport qualité/ prix est imbattable, go for Machu picchu team !!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Contact UsThe Choquequirao Trek is considered challenging to strenuous. It involves steep descents of over 1,500 meters on the first day, long ascents on the return, and a total of about 60 km round trip with significant elevation gain/loss. You should be in good physical condition, comfortable hiking 6-8 hours per day with a daypack, and have prior multi-day trekking experience. It’s not technical (no climbing gear needed), but the altitude (up to 3,050 m at the ruins) and heat/humidity in the canyon make it demanding. Fit and active travelers do it without issues; horse/mule support is available for gear.
The standard trek is 4 days / 3 nights (some extend to 5 days for a more relaxed pace). Typical itinerary: Day 1: Cachora → Chiquisca/Marampata (descent into canyon, camp). Day 2: Marampata → Choquequirao ruins (exploration afternoon). Day 3: Full day at the site + start return to Santa Rosa/Chiquisca. Day 4: Ascent back to Cachora. It requires camping (tents provided in most tours) and is fully supported with guides, porters, meals, and mules for gear.
No entry permits or daily limits exist for Choquequirao (unlike Machu Picchu or the Classic Inca Trail). You can go independently or with a tour without booking months ahead. However, for 2026 we recommend reserving a guided trek 1-2 months in advance during peak dry season (May–October) to secure spots, quality guides, and avoid last-minute issues. Independent trekkers need to arrange transport to Cachora and bring their own camping gear.
The dry season from May to October offers the best conditions: clear skies, dry trails, cooler temperatures in the highlands, and safer river crossings. June to August are peak months with more stable weather but slightly busier trails. Shoulder months (April–May and September–October) have fewer people and good weather. Avoid the rainy season (November–March) due to slippery paths, higher river levels, and risk of landslides in the canyon.
Yes, especially if you want a more authentic, uncrowded Inca experience. Choquequirao is significantly larger (only ~40% excavated), features unique elements like the white llama terraces, and offers total solitude — often just 20-50 visitors per day versus thousands at Machu Picchu. The trek itself is a true adventure through dramatic canyons and remote Andean scenery. It’s ideal for trekkers seeking challenge and discovery rather than easy access. Many who do both say Choquequirao feels like “the real lost city.”
