TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01:

Puerto Maldonado → Sandoval Lake → Tambopata River Lodge

Our team will welcome you at the Puerto Maldonado airport, bus terminal, or your confirmed hotel. We recommend arriving early in the morning so there is sufficient time to complete all scheduled activities.

After registration and final preparations, we will travel to the port and board a motorized boat for the journey along the Madre de Dios River toward the entrance to Sandoval Lake.

Jungle Walk to Sandoval Lake

From the entrance, we will begin an approximately 3-kilometer guided rainforest walk. The trail is mostly flat but may be muddy, wet, or slippery, particularly during the rainy season.

Along the way, your guide will explain the tropical vegetation and help identify insects, birds, monkeys, and other wildlife.

Paddle-Canoe Exploration

Upon reaching Sandoval Lake, we will board a traditional paddle canoe and navigate quietly across the water.

Depending on wildlife activity, you may observe:

  • Giant river otters
  • Black caimans
  • Hoatzins
  • Herons and kingfishers
  • Cormorants and jacanas
  • Monkeys and sloths
  • River turtles and other aquatic species

After the canoe excursion, we will walk back to the river and return to Puerto Maldonado or continue directly toward the next departure point, according to the operational plan.

Transfer to the Tambopata Lodge

In the afternoon, we will travel by ground transportation toward the Tambopata River. Upon reaching the riverbank, we will board a motorized boat and continue to the jungle lodge located in the Tambopata area.

After check-in, dinner will be served at the lodge. Your guide will explain the early-morning schedule for the visit to Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

Day 1 Summary

  • Jungle walk: Approximately 3 kilometers each way
  • Main activity: Paddle-canoe wildlife exploration
  • Afternoon transfer: Puerto Maldonado to the Tambopata River lodge
  • Meals included: Lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation: Jungle lodge in the Tambopata area
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Good to know: This is a long day combining jungle walking, canoe navigation, and several transportation services.

We will wake up very early, usually between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM, and board a motorized boat for the journey to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick. The river journey may take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the lodge location, water level, weather, and river conditions. A light or camping-style breakfast will be provided during the excursion.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

Upon arrival, we will settle into the designated observation area and wait quietly for the birds to approach the clay wall.

Depending on weather and natural activity, different species of parrots and macaws may gather to consume mineral-rich clay. Possible sightings include red-and-green macaws, blue-and-yellow macaws, scarlet macaws, parakeets, and several parrot species.

The intensity and duration of the activity vary each day. Rain, strong winds, predators, river conditions, and other natural factors may influence the number of birds present.

Return to the Lodge

After the observation period, we will return to the lodge by motorized boat. Depending on the confirmed schedule, breakfast or an additional refreshment may be served upon arrival.

You will have time to collect your belongings before beginning the return journey by boat and ground transportation to Puerto Maldonado.

Return Transfer

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our team will provide transfer to the airport, bus terminal, or your confirmed hotel. Your onward flight or bus should be scheduled for late afternoon or evening. The exact recommended departure time must be confirmed with our reservations team before booking transportation.

  • Final destination: Puerto Maldonado

Important Operational Information: This two-day itinerary is intensive and requires an early arrival in Puerto Maldonado on Day 1 and a late departure on Day 2. The schedule may be adjusted according to flight times, lodge location, boat availability, river levels, weather, and road conditions.

Travelers arriving late on the first day may not be able to complete the Sandoval Lake excursion. For this reason, all arrival and departure details must be reviewed and approved by our operations team before the reservation is confirmed.
