Travel Guide for Machu Picchu Tour Packages
Cusco was the political and spiritual centre of the Inca Empire, and the city still shows it. Colonial buildings rest on foundations the Spanish could not dismantle, streets follow their original Inca layout, and the walls of Qoricancha remain among the finest stonework anywhere in the Andes.
Above the city, Sacsayhuamán guards the valley with blocks weighing hundreds of tonnes, fitted so precisely that no mortar was ever required. Below, the Plaza de Armas fills each evening with locals, travellers and the sound of bells from the cathedral.
Most visitors treat Cusco as a stopover on the way to Machu Picchu. It deserves longer. Two or three days here lets your body adjust to the altitude and gives you time for the city itself — the San Pedro market, the San Blas artisan quarter, and the Inca sites in the hills above town.
From Cusco, everything else is within reach: the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, and the trekking routes that lead to Machu Picchu.
