TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

Cusco Hotel Pick-Up → Saywite → Cachora → Capuliyoc Viewpoint → Chiquisca

Your Choquequirao Trek 4 Days begins with hotel pick-up in Cusco between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM. Once the group is ready, we will travel in private tourist transportation through the scenic landscapes of Anta, Limatambo, and Curahuasi before entering the Apurímac region.

During the journey, you will enjoy views of agricultural valleys, traditional Andean communities, and mountain scenery as we make our way toward the first archaeological stop of the day.

Visit to Saywite Archaeological Park

After approximately three and a half hours of driving, we will arrive at the Saywite Archaeological Park.

The main attraction is the famous Saywite Stone, a large ceremonial rock carved with miniature representations of terraces, channels, animals, plants, and architectural structures. Your guide will explain its possible religious and hydraulic significance within Inca culture.

You will also have time to explore the surrounding ceremonial areas before continuing toward Cachora and the Capuliyoc viewpoint.

Arrival at Capuliyoc Viewpoint

We will continue by vehicle to Capuliyoc, the official starting point of the trek.

From this spectacular viewpoint, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, the surrounding mountains, and the snow-capped Padreyoc peak. On clear days, you may also see part of the route leading toward Choquequirao.

A freshly prepared lunch will be served here before beginning the hike.

Descent to Chiquisca

In the afternoon, we will start the trek with a gradual descent of approximately three hours toward Chiquisca.

The trail passes through several natural viewpoints, including the Cocamasana area, offering impressive views of the canyon and the surrounding Andean landscape. The route is mostly downhill, with dry and warm conditions becoming more noticeable as we lose altitude.

Upon arrival in Chiquisca, you will settle into a simple local guesthouse or rural lodge.

Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by a briefing from your guide about the following day’s route.

Descent to Playa Rosalinas

After breakfast, we will begin an approximately one-hour downhill hike toward Playa Rosalinas, located at around 1,200 meters above sea level.

We aim to complete this climb during the cooler morning hours, before the sun becomes stronger. Along the way, we will make short stops to rest, drink water, and enjoy the changing views of the valley.

Hike from Santa Rosa to Marampata

After a well-deserved break in Santa Rosa, we will continue ascending toward Marampata, located at approximately 2,850 meters above sea level.

This final uphill section takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the pace of the group. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes greener and the trail opens to wider views of the Apurímac Canyon, Padreyoc Mountain, and the surrounding Andean peaks.

Arrival in Marampata

Upon arrival in Marampata, a freshly prepared lunch will be served.

The afternoon will be free to rest, recover, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this small Andean community. From the lodge, you can admire impressive views of the canyon and, when the weather is clear, one of the most beautiful sunsets of the trek.

Night 2: Marampata: Spend the second night in a simple local guesthouse in Marampata, surrounded by impressive views of the Apurímac Canyon and the Andean mountains. This peaceful setting provides the perfect place to rest before visiting Choquequirao on the following day.

We will begin the day early with a nourishing breakfast at the lodge in Marampata. After preparing our daypacks, we will start the hike toward Choquequirao, one of the most impressive and remote Inca archaeological sites in the Peruvian Andes.

The walk to the complex takes approximately 1.5 hours and follows a scenic trail with views of the Apurímac Canyon, surrounding mountains, and cloud forest. As the morning light reaches the valley, the scale and isolated location of Choquequirao gradually come into view.

Guided Exploration of Choquequirao

Upon arrival, your guide will lead a detailed visit through the main sectors of the archaeological complex.

Choquequirao is often described as the “sister city of Machu Picchu” because of its size, architecture, ceremonial importance, and remote mountain setting. Unlike more crowded archaeological destinations, Choquequirao offers a quieter and more immersive experience.

During the guided tour, you will explore important areas such as:

  • Ceremonial plazas
  • Stone temples
  • Ritual platforms
  • Agricultural terraces
  • Residential sectors
  • Water channels and fountains
  • Administrative and religious structures

Your guide will explain the history, design, and possible functions of the different sectors while sharing information about the role Choquequirao may have played within the Inca Empire.

Visit to the Llama Terraces

Depending on the group’s pace, available time, and physical condition, we may descend to the lower terraces to visit the famous stone-carved llamas.

These unique figures were created using contrasting white stones arranged within the terrace walls. They are among the most distinctive artistic features of Choquequirao and may represent the importance of llama caravans, trade routes, and Andean symbolism in Inca society.

The descent and return from this sector require additional effort, so the visit will be evaluated by the guide according to the conditions of the day.

Packed Lunch at the Archaeological Site

To make the most of the visit, we will enjoy a packed lunch or substantial snack within an authorized area of the archaeological complex.

This allows us to rest, recover energy, and continue exploring without returning to Marampata during the middle of the day.

Return Hike to Marampata

After several hours of guided exploration, photography, and time to appreciate the site, we will begin the hike back to Marampata in the afternoon.

The return walk takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the pace of the group. Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to rest before enjoying a warm homemade dinner.

We will spend the third night in the same family-run guesthouse, surrounded by the peaceful landscapes of the Apurímac Canyon.

The final day of the Choquequirao Trek 4 Days begins very early in the morning. After preparing our daypacks, we will leave Marampata and start the long return journey through the Apurímac Canyon.

This is the most physically demanding day of the trek, combining steep descents, warm canyon temperatures, and a long final ascent to Capuliyoc. A steady pace, proper hydration, and trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Descent to Playa Rosalinas

We will begin with an approximately two-hour descent toward Santa Rosa, following the same mountain trail used earlier in the trek.

After a short rest, we will continue descending for another 1.5 hours until reaching Playa Rosalinas, located beside the Apurímac River.

Here, we will take time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the dramatic scenery of the canyon before crossing the suspension bridge and beginning the ascent on the opposite side.

The hike takes around three hours, depending on the pace of the group. The trail passes several natural viewpoints where we can pause and admire the Apurímac Canyon, the surrounding mountains, and part of the route completed during the previous days.

Reaching Capuliyoc marks the end of the trekking portion of this unforgettable adventure.

Return to Cusco

At Capuliyoc, we will have time to rest, take final group photographs, and celebrate the completion of the Choquequirao Trek.

We will then board our private tourist transportation for the return journey to Cusco, passing through Cachora, Curahuasi, Limatambo, and Anta.

Arrival in Cusco is expected at approximately 10:00 PM, depending on traffic, road conditions, weather, and the pace of the group. Drop-off will be provided at your hotel or at a central location in Cusco, according to the operational arrangements for your departure.

Not Included

Water for Your Bottles

Drinking water for refilling your reusable bottle is not included in the tour. However, small local shops operated by families along the Choquequirao route sell bottled water, soft drinks, and energy drinks. These shops are generally found every three to four hours of hiking, although availability may vary. You may also bring a portable water filter or purification tablets. Natural water sources can be found along the trail, but the water must always be properly filtered or purified before drinking to reduce the risk of illness. We also recommend carrying a small selection of personal snacks, such as chocolate, nuts, dried fruit, or energy bars, to maintain your energy between meals.

Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are not included in the tour, but they are highly recommended because the Choquequirao route includes long, steep ascents and descents, as well as uneven and sometimes slippery sections. Travelers who do not have their own equipment may rent a professional pair of trekking poles from us for $10 USD for the entire trek. The poles are durable and suitable for mountain trails, helping improve balance, reduce pressure on the knees, and provide additional support on difficult terrain.

Gratuities

Tips for the trekking support team, including the guide, cooks, and muleteers, are not included in the tour price. Gratuities are completely optional and should be based on your satisfaction with the service received. Any contribution is greatly appreciated by the team as recognition of their effort, professionalism, and dedication throughout the trek.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included in the tour package but is strongly recommended for all participants. Your policy should ideally cover trekking activities at altitude, medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip interruption or cancellation, delays, and lost or damaged belongings. Please review the terms and coverage of your policy before traveling to ensure that it is appropriate for the Choquequirao Trek.

Cancellation or Changes by Machu Picchu Team

The itinerary may be modified, postponed, or cancelled when circumstances make the original route unsafe or impossible to operate. These circumstances may include severe weather, landslides, road closures, trail damage, flooding, fires, strikes, social unrest, government restrictions, medical emergencies, or other events beyond our control. When possible, Machu Picchu Team may offer one of the following alternatives:

  • A new departure date
  • A modified itinerary
  • An alternative trekking route or activity of comparable value
  • A refund for services that were not provided and remain recoverable from local suppliers

Refunds cannot be guaranteed for services that have already been used, reserved, paid, or declared non-refundable by third-party providers.

Important Booking Recommendation

The Choquequirao Trek includes long ascents, steep descents, high temperatures inside the Apurímac Canyon, and several demanding hiking days. Before booking, travelers should carefully review the itinerary, difficulty level, physical requirements, and packing recommendations. Travel insurance covering trekking activities, medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, and travel delays is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK 4 DAYS FROM CUSCO

Is Choquequirao harder than Machu Picchu?

Yes, significantly. The Choquequirao trek is one of the most demanding hikes in Peru. Each day involves elevation changes of 1,200 to 1,500 meters on steep, narrow trails with no cable car or train option. The round trip from Cachora covers approximately 60 km over 4 days. That said, the difficulty is also what makes it special only around 30 visitors reach Choquequirao per day, compared to thousands at Machu Picchu, giving you an exclusive and almost solitary experience at an equally impressive Inca citadel.

How do you get to Choquequirao?

Choquequirao is currently accessible only by foot. The trek begins in Cachora, a small village approximately 3.5 hours from Cusco by road. From there, the trail descends steeply into the Apurímac Canyon before climbing back up to the ruins. There is no road, no cable car, and no shortcut the remoteness is precisely what has kept Choquequirao largely undiscovered. A cable car project has been proposed but as of 2026 it has not been built.

What will I see at Choquequirao?

Choquequirao is an extensive Inca citadel believed to have been a royal estate of the Inca Túpac Yupanqui. The site covers over 1,800 hectares, though only about 40% has been excavated. Highlights include ceremonial plazas, water channels, residential terraces, and the iconic Lower Terraces decorated with white stone llamas a unique feature found nowhere else in the Inca world. On the trek you will also cross the dramatic Apurímac Canyon, traverse cloud forest, and pass through small Andean communities.

What is included in the Choquequirao 4-day trek?

The tour includes round-trip transport from Cusco to Cachora and back, a professional bilingual trekking guide, a cook and support team, all camping equipment (tent, sleeping mat, dining tent), all meals from dinner on day 1 to lunch on day 4. 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners, entrance fees to the Choquequirao archaeological site, and a first-aid kit with oxygen. Not included: sleeping bag (available to rent), personal trekking equipment, and tips.
