TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 1:

Cusco Airport or Bus Station → Hotel Transfer → Check-in → Free Time → Acclimatization → Overnight in Cusco

Welcome to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire and the starting point of your five-day adventure through some of Peru’s most famous destinations.

Upon your arrival at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco or at the Cusco bus station, a representative from our team will be waiting for you to welcome you and provide your transfer directly to your hotel.

After arriving at your hotel, you can check in, settle into your room, and take some time to relax after your journey.

The remainder of the day is intentionally left free. Cusco is located approximately 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level, so having a relaxed first day gives your body time to gradually adjust to the altitude before beginning the more active parts of the itinerary.

Depending on your arrival time and how you feel, you can rest at your hotel or take a gentle walk through Cusco’s historic center. You may visit the Plaza de Armas, walk through the traditional streets surrounding the main square, enjoy a local restaurant or café, or simply relax and prepare for the following day’s adventure.

This first day is designed to give you a comfortable introduction to Cusco while allowing enough time for acclimatization.

  • Overnight: Hotel in Cusco
  • Meals: Not included
  • Main Activity: Arrival, hotel transfer and acclimatization
  • Maximum Altitude: 3,400 m / 11,155 ft

Today you will explore one of the most historically important and visually impressive regions of Peru: the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up in Cusco to begin your journey toward the Sacred Valley. As you leave the city and descend toward the valley, the landscape changes dramatically, revealing impressive mountains, agricultural terraces, traditional Andean communities, and spectacular views of the Urubamba Valley.

Exploring the Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley played an essential role during the Inca Empire due to its fertile agricultural lands, strategic location, and connection between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Throughout the journey, your guide will explain the history of the valley, the importance of its archaeological sites, and how the Incas developed sophisticated agricultural and architectural techniques adapted to the mountainous terrain.

Visit to Chinchero

One of the main stops of the day will be Chinchero, an important archaeological complex located high above the Sacred Valley.

Here you will discover impressive Inca terraces constructed along the mountainsides and learn about the historical importance of this strategic settlement.

The elevated location also provides spectacular panoramic views across the valley, making Chinchero one of the most scenic archaeological sites in the region.

Lunch in the Sacred Valley

After exploring Pisac and traveling through the valley, you will stop for lunch before continuing toward Ollantaytambo.

This is a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the surroundings before the afternoon portion of the tour.

Ollantaytambo Archaeological Site

In the afternoon, you will visit Ollantaytambo, one of the best-preserved Inca towns in Peru.

The archaeological complex is famous for its enormous stone terraces, temples, ceremonial areas, and impressive construction techniques. Ollantaytambo was both an important religious center and a strategic military location during the Inca period.

Your guide will take you through the main areas of the site while explaining its history and significance.

Train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo

After visiting Ollantaytambo, you will head to the train station and board your train to Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes.

The train journey is one of the most beautiful parts of the experience. The route follows the Urubamba River as the high Andean scenery gradually transitions into the lush cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will walk or be assisted to your hotel, where you can check in and relax.

You will have the evening free to explore the small town, have dinner at one of its restaurants, or simply rest before your visit to Machu Picchu the following morning.

  • Overnight: Hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo
  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch
  • Main Activities: Sacred Valley, Pisac, Ollantaytambo and train journey
  • Destination: Machu Picchu Pueblo / Aguas Calientes

Today you will experience the main highlight of your journey: Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the most internationally recognized archaeological site in Peru.

After breakfast at your hotel, you will prepare for your journey to the Machu Picchu citadel.

Bus Journey to Machu Picchu

At the scheduled time, you will take the bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

The approximately 30-minute journey follows a winding mountain road through the lush vegetation of the cloud forest before reaching the entrance to the archaeological complex.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

Once inside Machu Picchu, you will begin your guided exploration of this extraordinary Inca city.

Accompanied by a professional guide, you will learn about the fascinating history of Machu Picchu, its architecture, religious significance, agricultural terraces, temples, residential sectors, and the theories surrounding its original purpose.

Depending on the Machu Picchu circuit assigned to your entrance ticket, your guide will lead you through the areas permitted by that particular circuit.

Throughout the visit, you will also have opportunities to appreciate the incredible surrounding scenery and take memorable photographs of the citadel and the dramatic Andean mountains.

Machu Picchu sits approximately 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level, surrounded by tropical mountain forest and deep valleys, creating one of the most spectacular archaeological landscapes in the world.

Return to Aguas Calientes

After completing your guided visit, you will take the bus back down to Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Depending on your train departure time, you may have some free time to have lunch, walk through the town, visit the local market, or relax before heading to the train station.

Train to Ollantaytambo and Return to Cusco

Later in the day, you will board your train from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo.

Upon arrival at the Ollantaytambo train station, our transportation will be waiting to continue the journey back to Cusco.

Once in Cusco, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you can rest after an unforgettable day exploring Machu Picchu.

  • Overnight: Hotel in Cusco
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Main Activity: Guided tour of Machu Picchu
  • Machu Picchu Altitude: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
  • Return: Train and ground transportation to Cusco

Your fourth day takes you away from the archaeological sites and into the spectacular natural landscapes of the Peruvian Andes.

Today you will visit Humantay Lake, one of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Cusco region, famous for its intense turquoise color and dramatic location beneath the snow-capped Humantay Mountain.

Early Departure from Cusco

The adventure begins early in the morning with pickup from Cusco.

You will travel through the countryside toward Mollepata, passing through small Andean communities, agricultural areas, valleys, and mountain landscapes.

Upon arrival in the Mollepata area, you will enjoy breakfast before continuing by transportation toward Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike.

Hike to Humantay Lake

From Soraypampa, you will begin your uphill hike toward Humantay Lake.

The trail offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and provides a true high-Andean hiking experience.

The hike is physically demanding due to the altitude and uphill terrain, so we recommend walking at a comfortable pace, staying hydrated, and following the recommendations of your guide.

As you approach the lake, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic until you finally reach the turquoise waters of Laguna Humantay.

Enjoy Humantay Lake

Once at the lake, you will have time to rest, enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and appreciate the impressive contrast between the turquoise water, rocky mountains, and snow-covered peaks.

Humantay Lake is located at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest points of your five-day journey.

Your guide will provide information about the surrounding mountains and the cultural significance that these natural landscapes hold for Andean communities.

Hike Down and Return to Cusco

After enjoying the lake, you will begin the descent back to Soraypampa, where transportation will be waiting.

You will then travel back toward Mollepata for lunch before beginning the return journey to Cusco.

You will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon, where you will be transferred back to the central area and can enjoy your final evening in the city.

  • Overnight: Hotel in Cusco
  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch
  • Main Activity: Hiking to Humantay Lake
  • Humantay Lake Altitude: Approximately 4,200 m / 13,780 ft
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging due to altitude

After four days exploring some of the most remarkable destinations in the Cusco region, your Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Humantay Lake 5-Day Tour comes to an end.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and, depending on your departure schedule, some final free time in Cusco.

At the appropriate time, our team will pick you up directly from your hotel and provide transportation to Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport or the Cusco bus station.

We recommend providing your flight or bus departure information in advance so that we can coordinate your pickup time accordingly and allow sufficient time for your departure.

With your transportation, accommodation, major excursions, Machu Picchu visit, and transfers coordinated as part of the package, you can enjoy your journey without worrying about organizing each service separately.

Your adventure may be coming to an end, but you will leave with unforgettable memories of Cusco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Machu Picchu, and the spectacular Humantay Lake.

Important Information

We recommend reviewing both the “What’s Included” and “What’s Not Included” sections carefully before booking. Our goal is to provide clear information from the beginning so you know exactly which services are covered by your Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Humantay Lake Tour – 5 Days / 4 Nights and which additional expenses you should consider when planning your trip.

What to Pack

CUSCO, SACRED VALLEY, MACHU PICCHU & HUMANTAY LAKE TOUR 5 DAYS – WHAT TO PACK

For this 5-day / 4-night adventure, you will experience different environments and altitudes, from the city of Cusco and the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu and the high-altitude trail to Humantay Lake. Weather conditions can change considerably throughout the trip, so we recommend packing light while being prepared for both warm and cold conditions.

  • Comfortable Hiking Shoes: Bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes with good grip. You will walk on stone pathways, stairs, archaeological sites, and uneven terrain, and you will also complete a high-altitude hike to Humantay Lake.
  • Small Daypack: A comfortable lightweight daypack is recommended for carrying your passport, water, snacks, camera, sunscreen, rain protection, extra layers, and personal items during daily excursions.
  • Warm Clothing for Humantay Lake: Temperatures around Humantay Lake can be considerably colder than in Cusco and Machu Picchu. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, especially for the early-morning departure and the high-altitude sections of the hike.
  • Layered Clothing: Weather conditions vary considerably throughout the itinerary. Mornings and evenings in Cusco can be cold, while the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu may be warmer during the day. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust easily as temperatures change.
  • Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho: Weather in the Andes can change quickly. A lightweight waterproof jacket or rain poncho is strongly recommended, particularly during the rainy season.
  • Sun Protection: Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or cap. UV exposure is strong at high elevations, even when temperatures are cool or the sky is cloudy.
  • Insect Repellent: Recommended particularly for Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) and Machu Picchu, where the climate is warmer and more humid than in Cusco.
  • Refillable Water Bottle: Staying properly hydrated is especially important at altitude. Carry a reusable water bottle during your tours and particularly during the Humantay Lake hike.
  • Original Passport: Your original passport or valid identification document is essential for train travel and entrance to Machu Picchu. The information must match the details provided when your reservation was made.
  • Camera or Smartphone: Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the landscapes of the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake, and the surrounding Andes.
  • Personal Medication: Bring any prescription medication or personal medicine you may need during the five-day trip. Travelers concerned about altitude should consult a healthcare professional before traveling.
  • Snacks for the Humantay Lake Hike: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, or other lightweight snacks are useful during the hike and longer travel days.
  • Warm Hat, Gloves & Scarf: These items are particularly useful during the early-morning journey and hike to Humantay Lake, where temperatures can be low due to the altitude.
  • Walking Poles: Walking poles are optional but highly recommended for the Humantay Lake hike, especially for the downhill sections and travelers who prefer additional stability.
  • Cash in Peruvian Soles: Carry some local currency for snacks, drinks, souvenirs, tips, optional services, horse rental at Humantay Lake, and other small expenses where credit cards may not be accepted.
  • Portable Charger / Power Bank: A portable charger is useful for keeping your phone, camera, or other electronic devices charged during full-day excursions and the journey to Machu Picchu.

Important Recommendation – Luggage for Machu Picchu: For your overnight stay in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), we recommend traveling with only a small backpack or overnight bag and leaving your main luggage securely stored at your hotel in Cusco whenever possible. Train services to Machu Picchu have luggage restrictions, and traveling light will make your journey much more comfortable.

Important Recommendation – Humantay Lake: Humantay Lake is located at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, making it the highest and most physically demanding activity of this 5-day package. Wear appropriate hiking shoes, dress in warm layers, carry sufficient water, and walk at a comfortable pace. We strongly recommend spending your first days in Cusco and the Sacred Valley acclimatizing before completing this hike.
