Gocta Waterfall: Cloud Forest Fern Trail

Hiking to the World’s Third Highest Secret Cataract. Plunging 771 meters (2,530 feet) in two dramatic freefall drops through virgin Amazonian cloud forest, Gocta is one of the highest waterfalls on the planet. Incredibly, it remained completely unknown to the outside world until German explorer Stefan Ziemendorff measured it in 2002; local villagers kept it secret for generations fearing the curse of a mythical white-haired mermaid.

Historical Significance & Archaeological Clues

Local Chachapoyas legends warned that a seductive mermaid and a giant serpent guarded a golden pot beneath the churning pool of Gocta. Today, the village of Cocachimba operates a model ecotourism trail that takes hikers through lush valleys filled with giant tree ferns, wild orchids, and toucans.
