10/10 Experience. Edgar made the trip so so special. Till next time!

Ich habe mit Machu Picchu Team den 4D/3N Salkantay Trek gemacht und kann es wirklich nur empfehlen. Der Trek war insgesamt ein absolutes Highlight meiner Peru-Reise: unglaubliche Landschaften, fantastische Aussichten, die Humantay Lagoon, abwechslungsreiche Wege, super Leute in der Gruppe, Zipline als extra Spaßfaktor und natürlich am Ende Machu Picchu als perfekter Abschluss.

Die ersten beiden Tage wurden wir von Edgar begleitet — einem absoluten Vollprofi. Er hat den Trek bereits über 400 Mal gemacht und man merkt sofort, dass er genau weiß, was er tut. Gleichzeitig war er nicht nur organisatorisch top, sondern hat uns mit seinen emotionalen Geschichten zur Geschichte und Bedeutung der Orte wirklich abgeholt. Man spürt, dass er den Trek nicht einfach „abarbeitet“, sondern mit echter Leidenschaft dabei ist.

Ab dem dritten Tag hat dann Elisban übernommen, da sich unsere 4D/3N-Gruppe von den 5D/4N-Leuten getrennt hat. Kleine Empfehlung an alle, die noch überlegen: Wenn ihr die Zeit habt, macht lieber die 5D/4N-Version, weil die meisten Leute diese Variante wählen und man dann länger mit der gesamten Gruppe unterwegs bleibt.

Ein ganz besonderes Lob geht an Elisban. Er ist während des Treks wirklich zu einem sehr guten Freund geworden. Er war jederzeit hilfsbereit, aufmerksam, professionell und gleichzeitig immer für Späße zu haben. Seine positive Art hat die letzten Tage unglaublich angenehm gemacht, und auch fachlich konnte er mit seinem Wissen über Natur, Kultur, Geschichte und Machu Picchu voll überzeugen. Man hat sich bei ihm jederzeit gut aufgehoben gefühlt.

Insgesamt war der Trek perfekt organisiert, landschaftlich wunderschön und menschlich eine großartige Erfahrung. Vielen Dank an Machu Picchu Team, Edgar und ganz besonders Elisban für diese unvergesslichen Tage! Klare Empfehlung.

We did the 5 day Salkantay Trek with Machu Picchu team and had an amazing experience. Everything was seamless, including the transport, meals and trekking days. The best part was our guide, Edgar, who guided us expertly and looked after everyone in the team. He also gave us plenty of background knowledge regarding the wildlife, ruins and Inca history. I would highly recommend booking with Machu Picchu team!

Machu Pichu Team were excellent. The value for money was incredible. Would highly recommend. Edgar our tour guide was superb, his knowledge and expertise was invaluable.

Had the best experience with Machu Picchu Team all thanks to Juan and the rest of the team. Juan was always on hand to support the group and answer any questions we had along the way. Willi the cook made us great food for breakfast lunch and dinner. Couldn’t recommend more!

Cannot recommend this trek enough! Best few days, amazing scenery, great group and incredible experience. Juan was the best guide, he looked after us so well & was so passionate about the tour it really made the whole trip more special. We love Juan!!!! Also Willi the cook made delicious food, I will miss the Inka soup

He was amazing with our group, looking after everyone and sharing amazing knowledge at every stop.
The food was great and very well organised.

Overall Machu Picchu Team (MPT) gets a 4.5/5 across all categories in my experience on the 5 day Salkantay trek.

Trek was amazing. Routes were well planned and activities (I did the 5-day) fit nicely into the schedule. 5/5 for route/itinerary.

The logistics of food/duffel transportation were done smoothly and added to the experience (I got to carry less weight!). Meals were quite good for a backpacking trip, much nicer than you could carry/prepare if you were hiking on your own (e.g. appetizers, teas, then a main dish 3 meals/day). 5/5 here.

Housing was decent. 8/10 here because some accommodations (star domes) were missing handles to easily close them, and others had bolts on both sides of the door (so you could accidentally lock your roomie in/out if you weren’t careful). Different latch hardware on some of the houses would address all my concerns for the camping housing. The last night I stayed in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, it was not bad, although the hot water did run out and there were many negative reviews, so it’s possible I got lucky.

My guides were both awesome. Hans and Armando both brought energy and knowledge to the trip that would have been a void in their absence. 5/5

Machu Picchu itself was great, but be sure to book tickets MONTHS in advance, as in my experience in person ticket sales were for 3 days in advance, which is a long time to wait in aguas calientes. The Machu Picchu guide from MPT had his talking points, but I personally found it rather slow/mundane. (I also am the kind of person who races through museums reading very quickly, so to each their own…). Machu Picchu was incredible, I didn’t love the guide, 4/5 imho.

Return (by car): 3/5
I would not return by car again. My biggest issue with how MPT handled this was lack of transparency in the actual timing. The website, pre-hike meeting, and in-hike meeting all had different times for when I should return to hidroeléctrica to catch the car. When I did make it to hidroeléctrica I learned that I actually had another 1 km to walk and that the bus would leave 30 minutes after the time I was told that the car would leave (which was frustrating because I raced through Machu Picchu to get the timing right). The bus ride is long (~7 hours), and frankly sucks unless you enjoy roads that make you fear for your life (which I kinda do, but that’s besides the point). Leg room/storage room is an issue, as the bus can fill up. Clearer timing expectations would’ve really been beneficial to me, as I ended up basically being at the car 90 minutes early.

I did the 5 days Salakantay trek and Juan was the best guide you could ask for!
