The Machu Picchu Sun Gate, or Inti Punku in Quechua, is a stone gateway on the ridge above the citadel. It was the main entrance to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail, and it gives one of the best views of the whole site, with Huayna Picchu behind it and the Urubamba River far below.
This guide from Machu Picchu Team, a local tour operator in Cusco, explains how to visit the Sun Gate today: which ticket you need, how long the hike takes, when it is open and the easiest way to get there.

What Is the Inti Punku?
Inti Punku means “Gate of the Sun”. It is a small complex of stone walls, terraces and doorways on a pass above Machu Picchu. It worked as a control point: everyone arriving from Cusco along the Inca road had to pass through it before entering the city. Its name is often linked to the sun because, according to local tradition, the first light of the morning shines through the gate at certain times of the year, especially around the June solstice.
For Inca Trail hikers, it is the moment of arrival: the first view of Machu Picchu after days of walking.
Which Ticket Do You Need for the Machu Picchu Sun Gate?
Since 2024, Machu Picchu has been visited by circuits and routes, each with its own ticket and entry time. You can no longer walk to the Sun Gate with any regular ticket. The Inti Punku has its own route:
- Circuit 1 (Panoramic), Route 1-C: Portada Intipunku. It includes the hike to the Sun Gate and the upper viewpoints of the citadel.
- It is sold only in high season. In 2026, high season ran from 19 June to 2 November, plus a few holiday dates.
- For foreign visitors, it costs the same as the standard circuits: USD 45 for adults and USD 25 for ages 3 to 17.
- Tickets are sold on the official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe, and sell out early in the dry season.

Outside high season, the only way to reach the Sun Gate is by walking the Inca Trail.
The Hike to the Machu Picchu Sun Gate
From the upper part of the citadel, near the Guardhouse, the path climbs gently along the old Inca road through terraces and cloud forest. Halfway up there is a large rock where visitors still leave coca leaves as an offering. The last 15 minutes are steeper, with stone steps, and then you reach the gate and the viewpoint.
- Time: about 1 to 1.5 hours up and 45 minutes down, plus time at the top.
- Exposure: the trail is wide, without the sheer drops of Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
- Fitness: anyone in reasonable shape can do it; take it slowly if you have just arrived in Cusco.
Beyond the Sun Gate, the Inca Trail continues to Wiñay Wayna, but you can only walk it with an Inca Trail permit.

Reach the Machu Picchu Sun Gate on the Inca Trail
The classic way to see the Sun Gate is to arrive through it on foot, as the Incas did:
- Inca Trail 4 Days (from USD 740): on the last morning you reach the Sun Gate at dawn, before your guided tour of Machu Picchu.
- Short Inca Trail 2 Days (from USD 510): about 12 km from Km 104, past Wiñay Wayna, arriving at the Sun Gate in the afternoon. Read our Short Inca Trail guide.
- Inca Trail 1 Day (from USD 400): the same route in a single day.
Inca Trail permits are limited and the trail closes every February. Check Inca Trail availability early.
Best Time to Visit the Machu Picchu Sun Gate
- Dry season (May to September): the clearest views. Since Route 1-C is sold in high season, this is when you can go with a regular ticket.
- Morning: clouds often fill the valley at dawn and clear by mid-morning, so a later entry time can mean a better view.
- Rainy season (November to March): the stone steps get slippery; walk carefully and bring a rain poncho.
See our guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu.
What to Bring
- At least 1 liter of water. There are no shops after the entrance, and you cannot leave and re-enter.
- Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent
- A rain poncho
- Shoes with good grip
- If you use trekking poles, they must have rubber tips.
- Your passport and printed or digital ticket
Remember the general rules: a small backpack only, no food inside the site, and no drones. See the Machu Picchu packing list.
