One of the most remarkable Cusco ruins to explore is Sacsayhuaman, pronounced like “sexy woman,” as our guide amusingly pointed out. Perched on a hill, this fortress complex offers breathtaking views of Cusco.

Incan architecture never fails to fascinate, particularly the intricate stonework found at Sacsayhuaman. The stones were meticulously cut and shaped to fit together seamlessly. The towering vertical rock walls exhibit no cracks, showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship of the builders. Constructing anything within these walls was a painstaking process. Moreover, some of the rocks are colossal, with the largest estimated to weigh between 150 and 200 tons. You’ll find one of the most impressive stone cuts here.

Another captivating feature is the zigzag pattern in which the rocks are laid. Symbolically representing the contour of the mountains behind them, these formations create a striking visual effect when the sun casts its shadow, evoking the appearance of mountains themselves.

Venturing to a different section of Sacsayhuaman, you’ll stumble upon natural rock slides. The origin of these slides remains a mystery, but they offer a natural playground for children and a delightful spot to explore.

Visiting Sacsayhuaman is a memorable experience, and if you time your visit right, you may have the opportunity to witness a breathtaking sunset. The site is typically open from 7 am to 6 pm, allowing ample time for exploration and appreciation of its splendor.
